I Samuel

Chapter 8

1``And it came to pass,
when Samuel was old,
that he made his sons judges {dictators} over Israel.

2``Now the name of his firstborn was Joel.

And the name of his second {son was} Abiah.

They were judges {dictators} in Beersheba.

3``But his sons 'Walked not in his Ways',
but turned aside
  {from God and His Word as Samuel loved more than life}
after money/lucre.

And took bribes and perverted judgment.

4-5~~ Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together,
and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5~~
and said unto him,
"Behold, you are old,
and your sons 'Walk not in your Ways'
  {the righteous Ways of God}.

Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."

{Note: They were UNIQUE but they wanted to be like the other nations apostate and miserable!}

6~~ But the thing displeased Samuel,
when they said, "Give us a king to judge us."

And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah/God.

7~~And Jehovah/God said unto Samuel,
"Listen/Harken unto the voice of the people
in all that they say unto you.

For they have not rejected you {Samuel},
but they have rejected Me {God} . . .
that I should not reign over them."

{Note: This is the Permissive will of God. God is a Gentleman and usually does not interfere with the free will of man even if it is NOT in their best interests.}

8~~"According to all the works which they have done
since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt
even unto this day,
wherewith they have forsaken Me . . .
and served other gods/elohiym . . .
so do they also unto you."

9~~"Now therefore hearken unto their voice.

However, yet protest solemnly unto them,
and show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them."

{Note: What will this king do? He will be a warrior. He will organize an army. And, he will also drain them dry with taxation.}

10``And Samuel told all the doctrinal communications/words {dabar} of Jehovah/God unto the people who asked of him a king.

11``And he {Samuel} said,
"This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you.

He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself . . .
for his chariots,
and to be his horsemen.

And some shall run before his chariots {foot soldiers}.

12``And he {will be Saul} will appoint him
generals/captains over thousands,
and captains over fifties
{organize the army into battalions and platoons etc.}.

And will set them to ear his ground,
and to reap his harvest,
and to make his instruments of war,
and instruments of his chariots.

13``And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries,
and to be cooks,
and to be bakers.

14``And he will take your fields,
and your vineyards,
and your olive-yards . . .
even the best of them,
and give them to his soldiers/servants.

15``And he will take the tenth of your seed
{what we call a tithe is actually Jewish Taxation -
  10% to run the government and common defense} . . .
and of your vineyards,
and give to his officers, and to his soldiers/servants
  {taxation for military support}.

16`` And he will take your menservants,
and your maidservants,
and your best/goodliest young men,
and your asses, and put them to his work.

17`` He will take the tenth of your sheep.

And you shall be his servants.

18``And you shall cry out in that day because of your king
who you shall have chosen
  {Saul was 'the people's choice - not God's choice}.

And Jehovah/God will not hear you in that day
{they made the free will decision to be apostate to Him - they
wanted a human king like other nations - what they want is what
  they get}."

19~~Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel.

And they said, "No . . . but we will have a king over us
  {rejection of God's authority} 20~~
that we also may be like all the nations.

And that our king may judge us,
and go out before us,
and fight our battles
{instead of having God leading them}.

21``And Samuel heard all the words of the people,
and he recited them in the ears of Jehovah/God.

22``And Jehovah/God said to Samuel,
Listen to their voice and make them a king.

And Samuel said unto the men of Israel,
"Go you every man unto his city."
