John

Chapter 6 (Continued)
51~~"I {Jesus} keep on being the always living bread
which came down from heaven.
If anyone eats {phago/esthio} of this bread {believes in Me},
he will live forever;
and the bread which I will give is My flesh,
which is 'on behalf of'/for the life of the world."

{Note: Christ's flesh, the humanity of Christ, is the basis of salvation, it was necessary for Him to become true humanity. "The living", which means "always living." "I am that always living bread." This anticipates resurrection, ascension, and session. It also indicates the fact that when you believe in Christ you enter into union with Christ.}

{Note: The Greek word Jesus uses here translated eats is phago, which comes from esthio. It means to primarily to eat meat or a meal (the Exodus Generation 'phago' manna). He appears to be alluding to cannibalism}?"

{Verses 52-59: Message To Disputing Crowd - the Antagonistic Crowd}
52~~The Jews therefore kept on quarreling
face to face with one another of the same kind, saying,
"How can this Man give us His flesh to eat {phago/esthio}?"

53~~"Point of doctrine
which I {Jesus} keep on saying to you . . .
except {negative 3rd class condition}
you eat {phago/esthio} the flesh of the Son of Man,
and drink His blood
- maybe you will, maybe you will not -
you have no {eternal} life in you."

{Note: This is an analogy of the flesh of Christ being perfect humanity . . . bearing our sins. And, to drink his blood represents the spiritual death of Christ on the cross.}

54~~"Whoever eats {trogo} My flesh
and drinks My blood has, and always will have,
eternal/everlasting {aionios} life;
and I will raise him up at the last day."

{Note: Instead of phago/esthio which means to eat meat, Jesus switches to trogo here, which means to eat fruits and vegetables. He is making it clear to them that cannibalism is not in view here.}

{Note: To eat and drink are non-meritorious acts. The act represents the act of faith, which is also non-meritorious. 'My flesh' represents the humanity of Christ, which is impeccable, satisfying the righteousness of the Father. 'His blood' represents the work of Christ on the cross satisfying the justice of the Father. Flesh and blood together answer to the whole doctrine of propitiation, which satisfies the righteousness of the Father.}

{Note: Aionios is the Greek word which is translated eternal when it is used with God - no beginning and no ending. With creatures, it should be translated everlasting - a beginning, but no ending. So here, we share Jesus' eternal life, and we have everlasting life.}

55~~"My flesh is 'true food' {food of truth},
and My blood is 'true drink' {drink of truth}."

{Note: Again this is a spiritual analogy. 'True food' is to give you eternal life. 'My blood is true drink,' literally. By true food and true drink He is referring to eternal salvation.}

56~~"He who eats {trogo} My flesh
and drinks My blood
abides in Me,
and I {abide} in him."

{Note: Every believer is in union with Christ forever. Christ indwells the believer.}

57~~"As the constantly living Father
'has sent Me on a mission' {apostello}
and I keep on living because of the Father
and so . . .
he who feeds {trogo} on Me {faith}
will live because of Me."

{Note: In eternity past, God the Father made provision for Jesus Christ in time. God the Father provides everything we need. And, we have had many times that apostello means to send on a mission as an official representative or delegate.}

58~~"This {probably patting His Chest - meaning Himself}
keeps on being the bread that came down from heaven -
not as your fathers ate {phago/esthio} the manna and are dead.
He who eats {trogo} this bread {faith in Christ}
will live for ever."

{Note: 'Not as your fathers did eat manna in the desert and are dead' - they are dead because after that forty years the generation had died out under the sin unto death. They ate manna that sustained them while they were alive but manna could not sustain in death because literal bread cannot sustain in eternity. You must have the bread of life, and the bread of life for eternity is Jesus Christ.}

59~~These things He {Jesus} said in the synagogue
as He taught in Capernaum.

{Verses 60-71: The Message to the Disciples}
60~~Therefore many of His disciples
  {from the Galilean 5000 men He fed plus others},
having heard, said,
"This keeps on being 'grating on the mind' {skleros} words,
who is able to hear and obey?"

{Note: The word 'disciple' here means simply those who are hanging around, it doesn't mean those who believe in Him. There are some who believe. These are those who have been following Jesus during His Galilean tour.}

{Note: Skleros translated 'hard' in the KJV is an onomatopoetic word {its meaning comes from the way it is pronounced - a skkkklllll-os word} and it means something that grates on the mind, something that antagonizes the mind. It doesn't mean 'not understood'. It is something that is offensive to the individual. We are now hearing from them the fact that they are on negative signals at the point of gospel hearing.}

{Jesus is not taken by Surprise}
61~~Moreover, Jesus always knew in Himself {Omniscience}
that His disciples
  {not the 12 here - the 5000 followers from feeding the 5000}
'murmured out loud'/complained concerning this, He said,
"Does this {bread of life message} offend you?"
  {of course they are offended by the way they are acting!}

62~~"If you should see the Son of Man
ascend up where He was before
- maybe you will see, maybe you will not see -
then would you understand?

{Note: The last phrase 'then would you understand' is part of an idiom. We need to insert this in to make the meaning clear in the English}?"

{Note: The Son of man is a title for the Lord Jesus Christ in the hypostatic union.}

{Jesus' Last Call to these People}
63~~"It keeps on being the spirit/spiritual which gives life . . .
the flesh provides nothing.
The words that I have spoken to you . . .
keep on being 'spirit'/spiritual
and {they} keep on being life."

64~~"But, in contrast,
there keeps on being some of you
who keep on not believing."
For Jesus knew from the beginning
who they were who did not believe,
and who would betray Him {Judas was in the group}.

65~~And He said,
"Because of this I have said to you
that no one can come to Me
except {negative 3rd class condition}
- maybe it will be, maybe it will not be -
it were given unto him from My Father."

{Note: "For Jesus knew from the beginning - in eternity past - who they were that believed not, and who should betray him." Why does He make a distinction? Those who keep on saying no in the crowd are going to withdraw, they will depart from Him. But there is one who will not depart who will betray Him and that one is Judas Iscariot. He will hang around. What Jesus said was so strong that it drove out those who rejected Him, with one exception. And Jesus is not taken in by Judas even though he hangs around.}

{Note: The Father had a plan, He provided salvation for positive volition. Those who are on negative volition will not accept the gift, and therefore while everything is provided it is their own free will that causes them to reject. The words 'except it were given' is in the perfect tense. Salvation was provided in eternity past with the result that it is available to all now. It is in the passive voice: salvation is received under grace. Subjunctive mood: salvation is conditional depending on whether you go on positive or negative signals.}

66~~From this {message}
many of His disciples departed
and walked in association with Him no longer.

67~~Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Will you also go away?"

{Peter Applies Doctrine in his Soul to the Situation}
68~~Then Simon Peter had an answer,
"Lord {recognizing His deity},
face to face with whom shall we depart?
You keep on having the words of eternal life."

{Note: Face to face means personal relationship. Where else can we get salvation, is what Peter is saying.}

69~~"We {Peter speaking for the 12}
have believed in the past with results that continue
and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

70~~Jesus answered them,
"Did I not choose you, the twelve,
and one of you keeps on being a devil {devil possessed}."

71~~He kept on speaking of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
For he it was who should betray Him . . .
being one of the twelve.

{SideNote: When all this is clarified Jesus and the disciples depart from Capernaum. His ministry is finished in the northern part of the kingdom for a while.}
