Psalms
Chapter
108
{Mental
Attitude of a Mature Believer as a Professional Soldier}
{Note:
Psalm 108 was put together by David by combining two of his previous
Psalms. Probably was put together to show this is a direct result of
his great victory at Helam - See II Samuel 10.}
1a``{Title}
A Psalm of David.
{Verses
1b-5: Inexact Quote From Psalm 57:7-11 - Aftermath of Battle of Helam}
1b~~My
heart/'right lobe' is stabilized {kuwn}, O 'Elohiym/Godhead.
I
will sing and 'touch the strings' {zamar} . . .
{zamar referred to a 'sul-try' (sp) which is a 12 string instrument}
also/even
. . . {expressing} my honor {kabowd}.
2~~Awake,
O harp and lyres . . . I will awaken the dawn.
{apparently David and his men are going to attack at dawn}
3~~I
will praise/thanks You, O Jehovah/God,
among
the people {David's army}
and
I will sing praises unto You among the nations
{the confederation of 'Ar-a-ma-ins /Syrians who are defeated in
this battle - this battle allowed for the rise of the Western
European Civilization - it was one of the most decisive victories in
history}.
{Credit
to the Source of the Victory}
4~~For
Your grace . . . is great above the heavens.
And
Your Doctrine/Truth reaches to the skies/clouds.
{Summary
of Victory at Helam}
5~~Be
exalted, O 'Elohiym/Godhead, above the heavens . . .
and
Your glory
{kabowd - technical here for 'God's Integrity} . . .
above
all the earth.
{Verses
6-13: Inexact Quote from Psalm 60:5-12 -
David's Prayer Prior to Battle of Helam}
6~~In
order that Your beloved
{'mature believers'/'client nation because of the large pivot of
mature believers'}
might
be delivered {in battle} . . .
cause
us {David's army}
to
be delivered by Your right hand . . .
therefore,
answer us.
{David's battle prayer}
{Military
Policy that Lead to Victory}
7~~'Elohiym/Godhead
has spoken in His integrity/holiness {qodesh}.
I
will rejoice.
I
will draft/'portion out'/divide {soldiers out of} Shechem
{an area of draft dodgers - David will 'enlist' them - out of the
Northern Kingdom}
and
mobilize/'measure out' out of the valley of Succoth
{northern base from which David operated}.
8a~~Gilead
is mine.
Manasseh
is mine.
{Note:
This means the Jews on the East side of the Jordan River will serve
in David's army}
8b~~Ephraim
also is the fortification/helmet of my head.
{David's 'shock troops' will come from Ephraim}
8c~~Judah
is {the source of} my 'policy-maker'/'officers corps'
{chaqaq - Poel stem - means to 'make a policy' so
chaqaq means lawgivers and in military terms was used for
officers}
{Military
Successes Described - Three Nations Who Challenged the Freedom of Israel}
9a~~Moab
is 'my field lateen'/'pot of my washing'.
{place where an army excretes and buries it and leaves it behind -
moving on - the stench of the enemy (internal or, as is here,
external) is gone. The Moabites were the descendents of Lot and
his incest with his oldest daughter.}
9b~~Over
Edom I have been caused to throw my 'GI Boot'/shoe.
{why boot here? Because the success of this campaign (II Samuel
8:13-14) was the fast marching of Abishai. This is victory through
fast marching}
Over
Philistia I 'shout the cry of victory' {ruwa` - Hithpoel Stem}.
{why the cry? Because light infantry goes into battle shouting -
KILL KILL}
10a~~Who
will carry me {David} into the fortified city {Rabah}?
{rhetorical question - God is the ultimate source of David's victory
and his army is the immediate source - this is like carrying the
coach at the end of a game}.
10b~~Who
will lead me {David} into Edom?
{this is anticipation of a sneak attack by the Edomites - down in
the South they made a sneak attack while David was fighting at
Helam - this became the battle of the Salt Sea}
11~~You
have not . .. O 'Elohiym/Godhead . . .
'rejected
us'/'cast us off', have You?
{another rhetorical question by David - he knows he is right with
God and God should be on his side in the battle}
Therefore,
O 'Elohiym/Godhead, will You not advance with our armies?
{David won by attacking - defense only keeps you from being
destroyed but does not will the victory}
12~~Therefore,
give us help against the enemy.
For
evil {shav'/shaw' }
is
the deliverance/welfare {t@shuw`ah} of man.
{Note:
The principal is, 'if man delivers me, it is evil - if it is God's
will and Work, it is good.'}
13~~"By
means of 'Elohiym/Godhead"/
"Throught
the integrity of 'Elohiym/Godhead",
we
will 'do valiantly'/
'manufacture
{from doctrine} battle courage' {`asah chayil}.
Therefore,
He
{God} Himself
will
overrun/'trample down' {and destroy}
our
enemies.
