Psalms

Chapter 39

{David's Prayer of Humility in Time of Conspiracy}
1a~~ To the 'chief musician'/'director of music' {natsach}
Y@duwthuwn {his name} . . .
a Psalm {mizmowr} of David

1b~~I 'thought to myself'/said,
"I will guard my Ways {derek},
that I will not sin with my tongue.
  {first thing David considered when he found a conspiracy against
  him - no bitterness, arrogance, hatred, implacability - no mental
  attitude sins or sins of the tongue}

1c~~I will put a muzzle on my mouth
as long as the evil
  {the revolution and conspiracy that led to it}
is in my presence.
  {to muzzle your mouth indicates you have control over the thinking
  in your soul}

{Note: RBT says that psalms 39, 41 and 55 are conspiracy psalms written by David approximately at the time of II Samuel 15:12 - the Absalom revolution.}

{David's Policy}
2~~ I was dumb with silence.
  {takes great humility to fulfill 1c - idiom of 'humility and flexibility
  and objectivity'}

I held my peace . . . far from prosperity.

And my pain/pressure {k@'eb} increased.

3-4~~My 'right lobe'/heart was hot within me,
while I was meditating.

A fire was kindled.
  {thought and emotion rubbed against each other producing a fire}

Then I spoke with my tongue {David's Prayer begins}, 4~~
"O Jehovah/God, cause me to know my end.

And what is the extent of my days?
  {David wants to know if he will survive the revolution - He needs to
  know to plan}

For I would know how short-lived I am.

{Note: David was not afraid of death, he needed to know if he needed a good trained assistant nearby if he died. This is a prayer for providing leadership in case of his death.}

5~~Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth.
  {as far out as I can blow my breath, that is how long my days are}

And the span of my years, is nothing before You.

Each man's life . . . is a breath.
  {basic doctrine of Logistical Grace - God breathed life into us, and
  when His time is right, we die. In essence our time is so short it is
  like one breath of God - David is pulling his thoughts together}

Selah
  {Selah means singers rest and instruments play on -
  it is a picture of you resting while the Grace of God continues on}.

6~~Man is a mere shadow . . .
as he Walks/'goes back and forth' across the earth.

He bustles about . . . but only in vain.

He accumulates wealth . . . not knowing who will possess it.

7~~But now, Lord/'Adonay, for what shall I trust?

My hope/confidence is in You.

8~~Deliver me from all my transgressions.
  {always wise to start with rebounding your sins}

Do not make me the scorn of fools.

9~~I have become dumb . . . I do not open my mouth . . .
for You only have done this.

{Note: In the case of the Absalom revolution, David is recognizing that the installment of the 4th cycle of discipline is the result of the justice of God.}

10~~Remove Your scourge from me.

Because of the opposition from Your hand,
I am perishing.

11~~You rebuke and discipline men for their sin.

You make their prosperity melt away,
like {damage caused by a} moth.

Truly men are only a breath.

Selah
  {Selah means singers rest and instruments play on -
  it is a picture of you resting while the Grace of God continues
  on}.

12~~Hear my prayer, O Jehovah/God,
and listen to my cry for help.

Do not be deaf to my weeping.

For I dwell with you as an alien . . .
a stranger . . . as my fathers were.

{Note: God called out Israel as a special race to evangelize the rest of the world. But David feels that he has failed miserably and is an alien in his own land.}

13~~Look away from me in discipline
that I am become cheerful
before I depart . . .
and am no more {before David dies}.
