Drill Toward the Weak or Reversionistic Believer}
17-18~~Now
I urge you
{parakaleo - an encouragement or rebuke - here urgent
encouragement},
brethren/'Royal
Family of God' {adelphos},
'be
looking out for'/notice/'scope out' {skopeo}
{at one time it meant to look at one critically, but it came to mean
to be alert - to watch out for the following type of activity}
those
who are causing dissentions/divisions {dichostasia}
{taking two stances - trouble makers}
and
traps/'enticements to leave doctrine'
{skandalon - from which we get scandal - it was the trigger of a
trap - a bait stick this person is a bait stick or a trap where
growing believers are concerned it is anything that distracts you
from the intake of the Word (see next phrase) - you do NOT
judge THEM - you recognize the test - and separate from their
influence on you - you have no right to judge them, hate them,
be bitter toward them on and on - love the brethren -
but separation is COMMANDED in certain circumstances}
contrary
to the doctrine {para didache}
which
you have 'learned from a teacher' {manthano} . . .
{principal - doctrine does you NO GOOD if you have not learned it!}
in
fact, be 'turning away from'/'be separating from' them
{ekklino - imperative mood - this is a command}.
{Note:
The Greeks had a number of words for teaching. Manthano means to
learn under the authority of a teacher like in a classroom setting.
It is not 'one on one instruction' or 'reading a book'. The gift of
Pastor and Teacher was a permanent spiritual gift that is still
active today. Each believer needs to find their right teacher and
consistently
take in doctrine and under the system of authority; they can
properly take in the word.}
18~~For
such {toioutos} {believers}
'do
not obey'/serve {douleuo - a word of servitude} our Lord Christ,
but,
in contrast,
{they
serve} their own emotions {serving themselves}
{idiom: koilia literally means 'belly' (which is an empty sack) and is
used for the emotions}.
And,
by their 'smooth and flattering speech' {chrestologia kai eulogia}
{Chrestologia means 'bland/smooth/fraudulent speech' plus
eulogia means 'good communication' and comes to mean flattering},
they
deceive {exapatao}
the
'right lobes'/hearts {kardia}
of
the 'unsuspecting'/'non-discerning' {akakos}
{means those without solid doctrine in their souls are operating on
emotions and are deceived - those who are ignorant of doctrine
and therefore 'unsuspecting' and taken in by false teaching -
a warning to stick as close to the Word as you can (and as close
to the original language and meaning as is possible)}.
{Note: This is a warning that without doctrine, a person is self-centered, emotional, and blind in the soul. This person can be taken in by a charismatic teacher to whom they are emotionally drawn. This person emphasizes a 'pleasant personality' in their lives instead of solid doctrinal teaching as the right criteria.}
19~~For
certainly,
{the
report of} of your obedience/'authority orientation' {hupakoe}
has
become known to all {aphikneomai}.
Therefore, because of you I {Paul} am delighted.
But
I want you to be wise/learned/sagacious {sophos}
with
reference to 'the good' {agathos}
{divine good - orientation to the Plan of God -
all God has designed for you - understood via the intake of the
Word if the Pope or the Bishop or the Pastor-teacher is wrong,
then the bible is correct when 'preachers' stop teaching the Word -
watch out}
and
unharmed/unravaged {akeraios}
{referring to integrity maintained}
with
reference to 'the evil' {kakos}.

20~~The
God of prosperity/'inner peace' {eirene}

soon crush {suntribo} Satan
under
your feet.
The
grace of our Lord Jesus . . . {be} with you
{His grace carries us through Satan's rule of this world}.
{Note: Blessings from God to the believer in time defeats Satan and his plan - the alternative plan from God's plan as explained to us by the Word of God and the person with the gift of pastor and teacher. And, it is grace that protects us from Satan and his demons - or their influence.}

teacher of the Word Timothy was younger than Paul}

{Lucius was older than Paul. He had the gift of prophecy (see Acts
13:1) when that gift was still active - he also ordained Paul and
Barnabas and was on Paul's ordination board. He spent 16 months
with Paul in Corinth},

{he was a very successful businessman. He had a mansion in
Thessalonica in which Paul often was a guest. His house was
attacked by a mob in Acts 17:5.},

- but Jewish blood is Jewish}.

Tertius
{this is the Latin word for 'Third'. Some speculate that this is
actually Silas (who was third in Paul's command structure, but
that can not be confirmed},

wrote this epistle/letter,

the Lord.
{Note: Paul had gone nearly entirely blind. Tertius was Paul's amanuensis (scribe) in putting this Epistle down on paper. His secretary. Galatians and other books Paul indicates he saluted in his own hand - the rest was written down by a scribe.}
