Zechariah

Chapter 12
{Note: This Chapter is the Account of the Tribulational Siege of Jerusalem - Jewish Style to Emphasis Event - Give Summary account then more details about the Summary (Summaries being - 'in that day' - many times here - as opposed to the English style where we summarize at the end).}

{Chapter Title and Three Identifiers of 'Jehovah'}
1~~{Title} "The 'crushing weight {of Judgment}' {massa'} -
from the Word/'doctrinal communication' {dabar} of Jehovah/God concerning Israel," said Jehovah/God,
  {The One Who did all three of the following is identified -
  see Colossians 1:16-17, Isaiah 42:5 and Hebrews1:10 :}
Who stretches forth the heavens . . .
Who laid the foundation of the earth . . .
and Who formed the life/spirit {ruwach} of man within him.

{Note: The Hebrew word massa' means a weight of judgement against a nation. God is going to judge a nation, specifically the nation Israel. And during the Tribulation Israel is judged as a nation. God is constantly in the process of judging nations. However, the 'crushing weight' means this type of a judgement: a stone, and it is going to fall on the nation Israel. But Israel is going to be attacked by the king of the north, by the king of the west, the kings of the south, and by the kings of the east; they are all going to attack, and they are going to be crushed. And when the stone falls everyone is going to be crushed except believers.}

{Note: This first two identifies of Jehovah are obvious. Ruwach means breath, life and spirit. RBT says here it means life and it is a reference to Genesis 2:7 when He breathed into man's nostrils the breath of lives. He gave the original man a soul and spirit.}

{Verses 2-3: Introduction Still - To Third Siege of Jerusalem}
2~~Behold, I will make Jerusalem
a cup/'drinking goblet' of reeling {from intoxication} {ra`al}
  {In other words, Jerusalem is pictured as a goblet filled with some
  very strong intoxicant. And who is going to drink? The king of the
  north, the kings of the east, the king of the south,
  the king of the west, and the dictator of Palestine (who is a Jew
  from the tribe of Dan).}
unto all the people {the Gentiles} round about,
when they shall be in the siege
both against Judah and against Jerusalem
  {Judah is the southern kingdom and Jerusalem is its capital}.

{Summary Subject 1}
3~~And in that day {Siege of Jerusalem in Tribulation}
will I make Jerusalem
a 'stone that crushes'
for all people {Gentiles}.
All who burden themselves with it
shall be cut in pieces {sarat sarat}
  {total and complete destruction of invading armies -
  doubling is very strong}
though all the nations/Gentiles {gowy}
of the earth/world are gathered against them.

{Note: A stone which crushes, a stone which is so heavy that it cannot be lifted up out of the road. In other words, there is in this phrase the finality of judgement. What is meant by a final judgement? The destruction of the peoples involved. Five peoples are involved: 1) the unbelieving Jews who are religious (Matthew 24), just as they were in the day of our Lord; 2) The king of the north who is the chief antagonist; 3) the king of the west, 4) the kings of the east whose destruction is described in Isaiah 63, and finally 5) the king of the south. So there will be a destruction of five different spheres of influence, though all the people of the earth are gathered together against it.}

{Summary Subject 2}
{Verses 4-5: Details of Verse 3}
{2nd Advent of Jesus Christ verse - Revelation 1:7}
4~~"In that day {end of Tribulation}",
said Jehovah/God,
"I will smite every horse with freight/terror {timmahown}
and his rider with confusion
  {literally horses or mechanized forces that can not move
  in the total supernatural darkness of that day}.
Therefore on the house of Judah,
I will open My eyes {exercise divine power} . . .
and will strike every horse of the people with darkness."

{Note: This is a day of supernatural darkness that can not be penetrated by ANY light -see Isaiah 13:9-10, Joel 2:10-11, 3:15; Amos 5:18; Ezekiel 32:7-8, Revelation 6:12 and Zechariah 14. The first light they will see will be the Lord coming to deliver.}

{Two Prepared Military Men in Jerusalem}
5~~And the 'military commanders'/generals {'alluwph} of Judah
shall think/"say in their heart/'right lobe' ",
'The inhabitants of Jerusalem . . . {shall be} my strength
in Jehovah/God of the armies/hosts
their 'Elohiym/Godhead.'

{Note: In other words, these commanders are going to pull in what remnants they have of their troops and they are going to make a stand in Jerusalem. From this verse, we see it is only the believers who will not give up. They are armed and dangerous - they have the mental attitude to fight!}

{Summary Subject 3}
6~~In that day
I will make the generals of Judah
like an 'torch of fire in the wood'
  {this is fire which is saved in some part of a fireplace
  and used the next day to light the stove. In other words, they
  are going to fire up these people}
like a torch of fire in 'the dry grass'/'a sheaf'
  {a sheaf is any kind of dry grass which when torched burns fiercely.
  In other words, these generals are going to fire up the people of
  Jerusalem who are believers. These believers have a mental
  attitude of divine viewpoint, which means they have the
  willingness to fight and to die for a cause}
and they shall slaughter all the people {attacking Gentiles}
round about,
on the right hand and on the left.
And Jerusalem shall be 'inhabited permanently
with blessing/in prosperity' {yashab}
as Jerusalem
  {reference to the New Jerusalem of the Millennium (different from
  the New Jerusalem of the New Universe) - see Revelation for the
  two New Jerusalems}.

{Note: This nucleus of believers is going to be delivered. And what do these believers do? After one glorious battle they go into one thousand years of perfect environment and they will be the basis for the repopulation of the earth in the Millennium. And they will live in Jerusalem for one thousand years.}

{Real Subject matter is not 'Jerusalem' but the PEOPLE living in Jerusalem}
7~~Jehovah/God also shall deliver {yasha` - Hiphil stem}
  {refers to physical deliverance from pressure or catastrophe, not
  personal salvation}
the tents of Judah first
  {Jews living outside of the city of Jerusalem}
for the purpose that
the glory of the house of David
and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem
do not magnify themselves {mental attitude sin of pride}
over Judah.

{Note: The tents of Judah refer to the inhabitants of the southern part of Palestine who are believers, and they are going to be delivered first at the 2nd Advent. Why? To avoid any expression of pride in the Millennium. The citizens of Jerusalem have always had a superiority complex. Here, they do not magnify themselves above Judah; they can't say that they are superior to other believers in the southern kingdom. So in order to avoid this possibility the 2nd Advent delivers Judah before Jerusalem. Here then is an important principle: under perfect environment there will still be an Old Sin Nature.}

{Summary Subject 4}
{Verse 8: Courage of the Remnant}
8~~In that day {end of the Tribulation - the 2nd Advent of Christ}
shall Jehovah/God defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem
and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David
  {A feeble person can be described as being hopeless, helpless,
  useless - in other words, a person who has no physical ability and
  no mental ability to meet the crisis. Next, is a reference to David.
  David didn't know how to fight when he went against Goliath - he
  was a shepherd not a soldier. So what did David have? A sling
  shot yes. But, it was his mental attitude that allowed him to take
  on a giant. In Jerusalem during the crisis we have people bottled
  up, many of whom are not effective with weapons. But they also
  will have the mental attitude of David (the battle is the Lord's).
  So they will learn in a hurry and they also have the courage to
  stand up with inferior weapons and fight a superior force, the army
  of the king of the north, with a minimum of training};
and "the house of David shall be as 'Elohiym/Godhead"
  {idiom: 'The house of David refers to the leadership of Israel. And
  "as Elohiym" refers to immutability and/or stability of character. No
  military setback, no overwhelming disaster, or anything else
  disturbs the leadership},
and as the angel of Jehovah/God before them.
  {title for manifest member of the Godhead - Jesus Christ}

{Summary Subject 5}
{Verse 9: Killing is Sometimes Authorized by God}
9~~And it shall come to pass in that day {2nd Advent},
that I {God} keep on determining {baqash - intensive/Piel stem}
to cause to be destroyed
all the nations {Gentiles}
who come against Jerusalem.

{Note: This is a literal slaughter of millions of soldiers. Matthew 24:37 relates the time of the 2nd Advent to the 'days of Noah'. At the 2nd Advent, all unbelievers will be caused to die by God Himself. The Millennium is a new civilization also and a new civilization always begins with believers only.}

{2nd Advent verse - - Millennial Spirituality - See Also Revelation 1:7}
10~~"And I will pour out upon the house {dynasty} of David,
and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
the spirit {ruwach} of grace {God the Holy Spirit}
and of supplications . . .
so they will be caused to look upon Me,
Whom they have pierced,
and they will weep bitterly over Him . . .
  {they 'regret' having lost the opportunity in time to honor the Lord.
  This is not eternity because there will be no regrets in eternity,
  but this is an event that occurs immediately after the 2nd Advent
  of Jesus Christ.}
like the bitter weeping
for his only son,
and shall be in 'regret' {marar} for Him,
as one that is in 'regret' {marar} for his firstborn.

{Note: Jewish unbelievers are in view here. They are the ones who have pierced Jesus with unbelief.}

{Summary Subject 6 - Jews Expressing a Ministry of Regret - National Rebound}
11~~In that day
shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem,
as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

{Note: This is a 'national rebound', as per Revelation 1:7. It is similar to the terrible mourning that occurred when king Josiah was killed by the Egyptians in 2 Chronicles 35:22-25. The same word for mourning is used as "the mourning of Hadadrimmon." The mourning has to do with the tremendous weeping which accompanied the death of king Josiah; "in the valley of Megiddon" - Megiddo.}

12~~And the land shall mourn,
every family apart {Divine Institution III - Family};
the family of the house of David apart,
and their wives apart;
the family of the house of Nathan apart,
and their wives apart.

{Note: This goes back to the beginning of the Millennium; "every family apart" - notice the existence of divine institution number three, a basic unit in worship - family; "the family of the house of David apart" - house of David refers to the ruling family. "The family of the house of Nathan" refers to Nathan being the son of David - the full brother of Solomon - through both of these the line of Jesus Christ is reckoned. David's line through Solomon to Jesus is through Joseph (legal line - the adopted son of Joseph). David's line through Nathan to Jesus is through Mary (the blood line of David to Jesus). Jesus Christ is now back to reign and now therefore Nathan is mentioned - his family specifically because they are in the direct line.}

13~~The family of the house of Levi apart,
and their wives apart;
the family of Shimei apart,
and their wives apart.

{Note: Next we have the priestly family. "The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart"; "the family of Shimei" - Shimei represents the Levites. He was the son of Gershon, the son of Levi - see Numbers 3:18.}

14~~All the families that remain,
every family apart,
and their wives apart.

{Note: The rest of Israel is now mentioned. Notice the approach to the Millennium in this passage. When we actually get to the end of the passage we get to the Millennium. This approach has to do with what happens to believers. What happens to believers after the 2nd Advent? Believers receive the filling of the Holy Spirit, and this is followed immediately by a national rebound concept.}
