I
Chronicles
Chapter
11
1~~Therefore,
all {the elders} of Israel
gathered
themselves together before David at Hebron, saying,
"Behold,
we are your bone and your flesh.
{Note:
See II Samuel 5 for a parallel passage of this event.}
2~~And
in time past,
even
when Saul was king,
you
{David} were the one
who
'was our military commander'/'lead us out'
and
'exercised command over'/'brought us in' Israel.
And
Jehovah/God your 'Elohiym/Godhead said unto you,
'You
. . . and you only . . . will shepherd My people Israel,
and
you . . . and you only . . . will be prince over My people Israel."
3~~Therefore
all the elders of Israel
came
to the king {David} at Hebron
and
David made a contract with them in Hebron
before
Jehovah/God.
And
they anointed {mashach}
David
king over all Israel,
according
to the Word of Jehovah/God
by
the hand of Samuel.
{David
to Establish a Capital}
4~~Then
David and all Israel {national army}
advanced
aggressively to {what will become} Jerusalem
{means
city of Salem or city of Peace},
which
is Jebus . . .
where
the Jebusites were . . .
the
inhabitants of the land.
5~~
And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David,
"This
is as far as you will go!"
Nevertheless
David captured the castle of Zion . . .
the
same . . . is the city of David.
{Note:
Mt Sinai represents the Mosaic Law (where it was given to Moses). Mt
Zion represents God's plan - Grace and His Grace deliverance of David.}
{Note:
This is also the Jewish style of telling a story. The conclusion is
given FIRST. Then the details that God the Holy Spirit wants us to
know, follow. This is exactly opposite of the English style of
relating a story.}
6~~And
David said,
"Whoever
is the first to slaughter/kill
{very strong - a verb used as a noun}
a
Jebusite
shall
become 'Commander in Chief'/'Chief of Staff'.
Then
Joab, the son of Zeruiah,
charged
up first {and killed the first one} . . .
and
became the Chief {of Staff}.
{Note:
The Jebusites were taunting David's men from the walls. The first to
breach the walls and kill an enemy would become David's Chief of
Staff. And, Zeruiah, David's sister, was a great woman who lost her
military husband young. Nevertheless, she raised three sons to be
great soldiers! Being mentioned here is a great honor for a great
mother! Any time you have a great period of spirituality, the women
are teaching the sons God's laws of establishment and they become
great men in their chosen fields. Joab was David's nephew but he
EARNED his command!}
7~~And
David 'dwelt in prosperity' in the castle.
Therefore
they called it the city of David.
{Note:
This was a fort on one side of the hilltop. On the other side, David
built Fort Millo (next verse). In between the city of Jerusalem
developed. How David felt, he expressed in Psalm 30.}
{The
Building of the City of Jerusalem}
8~~And
he was in the process of building {banah} the city from a perimeter
{David
built defense lines and consolidated their positions and moved
out. Next they built fortifications around the hilltop to prevent
counter attacks - then the moved out to build the city on the
hilltop - then fortifications at the bottom of the hill. This 'holy city'
was built on a military principal!},
even
from Fort Millo
{ha millow' - name itself means 'Fort'} . . .
{as
far as} the perimeter/round {type fort}
{what we have here is David's version of our Pentagon. He is
building an outer defensive perimeter fortification}.
And
Joab repaired the rest of the city
{David built the new outer defenses and Joab repaired the old city
of the Jebusites.}.
9~~Consequently,
David
'became greater {yalak - meaning spiritually}
and
greater {halak - now meaning professionally}' . . .
{idiom literally: 'David went going/walking and great'}
{why?}
because the Jehovah/God of the armies/hosts was with him.
{Note:
When a person has success, will success spoil David? He is wealthy,
powerful and has a great castle and fortification and city and wives
and children . . . will this spoil David? No, David kept growing
spiritually and then the blessings of spiritual maturity continued.}
10
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had,
who
strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom,
and
with all Israel,
to
make him king,
according
to the word of Jehovah/God
concerning
Israel.
11
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had;
Jashobeam,
an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains.
He
lifted up his spear against three hundred
slain
by him at one time.
12
And after him was Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the Ahohite,
who
was one of the three mighties.
13
He was with David at Pasdammim,
and
there the Philistines were gathered together to battle,
where
was a parcel of ground full of barley;
and
the people fled from before the Philistines.
14
And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel,
and
delivered it,
and
slew the Philistines;
and
Jehovah/God saved them by a great deliverance.
15
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David,
into
the cave of Adullam;
and
the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.
16
And David was then in the hold,
and
the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.
17
And David longed, and said,
Oh
that one would give me drink of the water
of
the well of Bethlehem that is at the gate!
18
And the three broke through the army/host of the Philistines,
and
drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate,
and
took it, and brought it to David.
But
David would not drink of it, but poured it out to Jehovah/God 19
and
said, My 'Elohiym/Godhead forbid it me,
that
I should do this thing.
Shall
I drink the blood of these men
that
have put their lives in jeopardy?
For
with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it.
Therefore
he would not drink it.
These
things did these three mightiest.
20
And Abishai, the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three.
For
lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them,
and
had a name/reputation among the three.
21
Of the three, he was more honorable than the two;
for
he was their captain.
Howbeit
he attained not to the first three.
{did not reach the high rank in the army the other two did}
22
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada,
the
son of a valiant man of Kabzeel,
who
had done many acts;
he
slew two lion-like men of Moab.
Also
he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day.
23
And he slew an Egyptian,
a
man of great stature, five cubits high;
and
in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam;
and
he went down to him with a staff,
and
plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand,
and
slew him with his own spear.
24
These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada,
and
had the name/reputation among the three mighties.
25
Behold, he was honorable among the thirty,
but
attained not to the first three.
And
David set him over his guard.
