Judges
Chapter
2
1
And the angel of Jehovah/God
{see verse 7 - the angel of Jehovah is Jehovah - and the only
manifest member of the Godhead was Jesus Christ - so this is
Jesus Christ Himself here}
came
up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said,
"I
made you to go up out of Egypt,
and
have brought you unto the land
which
I swore unto your fathers
and
I said, I will never break My covenant with you. 2
And
you shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land.
You
shall throw down their altars.
but
you have not obeyed my voice.
Why
have you done this?"
3
Wherefore I {the angel of Jehovah} also said,
"I
will not drive them out from before you
but
they shall be as thorns in your sides,
and
their 'elohiym/gods shall be a snare unto you."
4
And it came to pass,
when
the angel of Jehovah/God
spoke
these words/'doctrinal communications' {dabar}
unto
all the sons of Israel {bene Yisra'el},
that
the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5
And they called the name of that place Bochim
{name means 'weeping'}
and
they sacrificed there unto Jehovah/God.
6
And when Joshua had let the people go,
the
children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance
to
possess the land.
7
And the people served Jehovah/God all the days of Joshua,
and
all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua,
who
had seen all the great works of Jehovah/God . . .
that
He did for Israel.
8
And Joshua, the son of Nun,
the
servant of Jehovah/God, died,
being
an hundred and ten years old.
9
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance
in
Timnath-Heres {Timnath Cherec},
in
the mount of Ephraim,
on
the north side of the hill Gaash.
10
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers.
And
there arose another generation after them,
which
knew not Jehovah/God {no doctrine},
nor
even the works
which
He had done for Israel.
{Note:
See Jeremiah 2:7 Where Jeremiah mentions this passage}
11
And the sons of Israel {bene Yisra'el}
did
evil in the sight of Jehovah/God,
and
served Baalim.
{idolatry - a system of idolatry}
12
And they forsook Jehovah/God
'Elohiym/Godhead
of their fathers {unfaithful} . . .
Who
brought them out of the land of Egypt,
and
followed other 'elohiym/gods,
of
the 'elohiym/gods of the people
who
were round about them,
and
bowed themselves unto them,
and
provoked Jehovah/God to anger.
13
And they forsook Jehovah/God,
and
served Baal
{Ba`al - name means 'lord' - a male idol worshiped as part of the
Phallic Cult}
and
Ashtaroth.
{`Ashtarowth - false goddesses in the Canaanite religion, usually
related to fertility cult - again worshiped where sex and child
sacrifice were components of their 'worship'}
14
And the anger of Jehovah/God was hot against Israel,
and
he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them,
and
he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about,
so
that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
15
Wheresoever they went out,
the
hand of Jehovah/God was against them
for
'unpleasantness'/'divine justice'
{ra` - when applied to mankind, it can be translated 'evil' - when
applied to God it is His divine justice administered based on His
perfect divine righteousness},
as
Jehovah/God had said,
and
as Jehovah/God had sworn unto them
and
they were greatly distressed.
16
Nevertheless Jehovah/God raised up
'executors
of justice'/'absolute rulers'/'law-givers/judges {shaphat},
who
delivered them out of the hand of those who spoiled them.
{Note:
These men were absolute rulers - not what we would think of as
'judges' today. The worst form of government is an absolute ruler who
misuses his power - this is called a tyrannical dictator. But the
best form of government is an absolute ruler with perfect
righteousness and justice - this is a benevolent dictator - and ONLY
Jesus Christ Himself in the Millennium qualifies to be a benevolent dictator!}
17
And yet they would not hearken
unto
their 'absolute rulers'/judges {shaphat},
but
they went a whoring after other 'elohiym/gods,
and
bowed themselves unto them.
They
turned quickly out of the Way which their fathers Walked in,
obeying
the commandments of Jehovah/God . . .
but
they did not so.
18
And when Jehovah/God raised them up
'absolute
rulers'/judges {shaphat},
then
Jehovah/God was with the 'absolute ruler'/judge {shaphat},
and
delivered them out of the hand of their enemies
all
the days of the 'absolute ruler'/judge {shaphat} . . .
for
it repented Jehovah/God
because
of their groanings
by
reason of those who oppressed them
and
vexed them.
19
And it came to pass,
when
the 'absolute ruler'/judge {shaphat}
was
dead,
that
they returned,
and
corrupted themselves more than their fathers,
in
following other 'elohiym/gods to serve them,
and
to bow down unto them.
They
ceased not from their own doings,
nor
from their stubborn Way.
{they followed their own 'human viewpoint' thinking - instead of
replacing that thinking with the norms and standards of God via
the study and acceptance and application of His Word}
20
And the anger of Jehovah/God was hot against Israel
and
He said,
"Because
that this people have transgressed My covenant
which
I commanded their fathers,
and
have not 'heard, listened and obeyed' {shama`}
unto
My voice . . . 21
I
also will not henceforth drive out any
from
before them of the nations
which
Joshua left when he died . . . 22
that,
through them, I may prove Israel,
whether
they will keep the Way of Jehovah/God . . .
to
Walk therein,
as
their fathers did keep it, or not."
23
Therefore Jehovah/God left those nations,
without
driving them out hastily;
neither
delivered He them into the hand of Joshua.
