Mark
Chapter
14
14:1-2``Now,
it was two days before the Passover
and
the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
And,
the chief priests and the scribes/'experts in the law'
were
looking 'for a way'/'as to how'
having
seized Him {Jesus} by craftiness/treachery
they
might put Him to death. . . 14:2``
for
they were saying, "Not during the feast . . .
lest
now there will be a riot/uproar of the people."
14:3``And,
while He {Jesus} was in Bethany
in
the house of Simon the leper,
as
He was 'reclining at the table'/dining
there
came a woman having an alabaster jar/box
of
'aromatic oil/ointment from nard {nardos}' . . .
pure
. . . very costly.
Having
broken the alabaster jar/box,
she
poured it on His head.
{Note:
Blueletter bible says that nardos came from the head or spike of a
fragrant East Indian plant belonging to the genus Valerianna, which
yields a juice of delicious odor which the ancients used (either pure
or mixed) in the preparation of a most precious ointment.}
14:4-5``Now
there were certain there who were angry
and
said to one another {murmuring to each other},
"To
what purpose has been this waste of ointment? 14:5``
For
it was possible to have sold
the
ointment for more than three hundred 'silver coins'/denarii
and
given to the poor!"
So
they 'spoke angrily'/murmured {embrimaomai} against her.
14:6-9``But
Jesus said, "Let her alone.
Why
are you 'bothering her'/'causing her trouble'?
A
'beautiful service'/
'good
of intrinsic value {kalos} production {ergon}'
she
rendered toward Me. 14:7``
For
the poor you will always have with you
and
whenever you desire, you are able to do them good.
But
Me . . . you absolutely are not {ouk} always having. 14:8``
'She
did what she could'/'That which she had . . . she used'.
She
took occasion beforehand
to
anoint My body for the burial. 14:9``
'I
tell you the truth'/'Point of doctrine I am saying to you' {amen},
wherever
the gospel/good news' is proclaimed in the whole world,
also
that which she herself did,
will
be spoken as a memorial of her."
14:10``And
Judas Iscariot, the one of the twelve,
went
off to the chief priests
for
the purpose of betraying {paradidomi}
Him
{Jesus} to them.
14:11``And,
they having heard,
rejoiced
inwardly,
and
promised to give him money.
So
he {Judas} went to seeking how he might betray Him
when
the opportunity presented itself.
14:12``And,
on the first day of the {Feast of} Unleavened Bread,
when
it was custom to kill/sacrifice {thuo} the Passover {lamb},
His
{Jesus} students/disciples say to Him,
"Where
do You want/desire us to go
and
prepare to eat the Passover?"
14:13-15``And
He {Jesus}
'sent
on a mission under His authority' {apostello}
two
of His students/disciples and says to them,
"Go
into the city, and there will meet you a man
carrying
an 'earthenware pitcher'/jar {keramion} of water.
Follow
him. 14:14``
And,
wherever he enters, say to the owner/master of the house,
'The
Teacher {didaskalos} says,
'Where
is My guest room {kataluma},
where
I may eat the Passover with My students/disciples?' 14:15``
And,
he himself will show you
a
'large upper room/'large room upstairs',
'in
a state of readiness'/furnished and prepared/ready.
And
there make ready/preparations for us."
14:16``And,
the students/disciples went out and came into the city,
and
found things just as he had told them.
And,
they prepared the Passover.
14:17``And,
evening having come, He comes with the twelve.
14:18``And,
while they were reclining at the dinner table and eating,
Jesus
said, ""I tell you the truth'/'Point of doctrine
I
am saying to you', one of you eating with Me, will betray Me."
14:19``They
began to be grieved and to be saying to him,
one
by one, "It is not I, is it?"
14:20``And,
He {Jesus} said to them,
"One
of the Twelve . . . one who dips with Me in the bowl/'deep dish'.
14:21``The
'Son of Man' will go as it is written about Him,
but
woe to that man through whose agency
the
Son of Man is betrayed!
It
would be better for that one
if
{ei} - and it is true - he had not been born."
{idiom: literally 'Good were it for him, if that man had not been
born'}
14:22``And,
while they were eating,
having
taken bread,
having
offered a blessing,
He
broke and gave to them and said,
"Take.
This is My body."
14:23``And,
having taken a cup
having
given thanks,
He
{Jesus} gave to them and they all drank from/of it.
14:24``And,
He {Jesus} said to them,
"This
is My blood of the covenant/testament
which
is being poured out in behalf of many.
14:25``
'I tell you the truth/
'Point
of doctrine I am saying to you' {amen},
I
will absolutely not ever {ou me} drink '
{double negative is strongest negative:
'I will absolutely not never drink '}
from
the fruit of the vine'/'of the product of the vine'
until
that day when I drink it new in quantity . . .
in
the kingdom of God."
14:26``And,
having sung a hymn,
they
went out to the Mount of Olives.
14:27-28``And,
Jesus said to them,
"All
of you will be caused to stumble/'fall away',
because
it stands written in the past
with
the result that it stands written forever,
'I
will strike/smite the shepherd,
and
the sheep will be scattered. 14:28``
But,
after I {Jesus} have been raised,
I
will go ahead/before you to Galilee."
14:29``But,
Peter said,
"Even
if {ei} - and it is true {1st class condition of assumption} -
all
will be caused to stumble/'fall away' . . .
certainly
not {ouk} I."
14:30``And,
Jesus says to him,
"
'I tell you the truth'/'Point of doctrine I am saying to you'
today,
on this night, before a rooster/cock crows twice,
you
will deny Me three times."
14:31``And,
he {Peter} kept on saying
with
'great emphasis'/'more vehemence and irritation',
"Even
if {ean} it should be necessary for me to die with You,
-
maybe it will, maybe it will not be necessary -
I
will positively not {ou me} deny You."
{ou me - very strong double negative again 'absolutely not never'}
Moreover,
in like manner, also all kept on saying.
14:32``And,
they come to a place called Gethsemane,
and
He {Jesus} says to His students/disciples,
"Sit
here while I {Jesus} shall pray."
14:33``And,
He {Jesus} takes with Him
Peter,
and James, and John.
And
He began to be very/thoroughly alarmed and distressed.
14:34``And,
He {Jesus} says to them,
"My
soul {psuche} is encompassed with grief . . .
even
to the point of death.
Remain
here and 'stay alert'/'be watching'."
14:35``And,
having gone on ahead a little,
He
{Jesus} was falling upon the ground
and
was praying that if {ei} - and it is true -
it
were possible the hour would pass from Him.
14:36``And
He {Jesus} was saying,
"Abba
. . . Father . . . all things are possible for/to You.
Cause
this cup to pass by and from Me.
Nevertheless,
not what I will/desire . . . but what You {will/desire}."
14:37``And,
He {Jesus} comes and finds them sleeping,
and
He says to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping?
Did
you absolutely not {ouk}
have
the strength to watch/'stay alert' for one hour? 14:38``
Be
constantly watching/'staying alert' and praying
in
order that you might not enter into temptation . . .
the
spirit is willing . . . but the flesh is weak."
14:39``And,
again, having gone off,
He
{Jesus} prayed,
saying
the same Thing/Word/Doctrine/Logos {logos}.
14:40``And,
again, having come,
He
{Jesus} found them sleeping . . .
because
their eyes were heavy . . .
and
they absolutely did not {ouk}
know
what to say to Him.
14:41-2``And,
He {Jesus} comes a third time and says to them,
"Keep
on sleeping and taking/getting your rest.
It
is enough. The hour has come.
Behold/Look,
the 'Son of Man' is being betrayed
into
the hands of sinners. 14:42``
Get
up. Let us be going.
Behold,
the one who is betraying Me has come near and is at hand."
14:43``And,
immediately, when He {Jesus} was still speaking,
there
approaches Judas, one of the twelve,
and
with him a crowd with swords and clubs/cudgels,
who
came personally from the high/chief priests
and
scribes/'experts in the law' and the elders.
14:44``Now,
the one betraying Him,
had
given them a prearranged signal, saying,
"Whoever
I shall kiss, it is He Himself.
'Arrest
Him'/'Seize Him with violence'
and
lead him away safely."
14:45``And
having come, immediately, approaching Him,
he
{Judas} says, "Rabbi!" and kissed Him {Jesus} fervently.
14:46``And
they laid their hands upon Him
and
seized Him with violence.
14:47``And,
a certain one of those who stood by,
drawing
his sword, struck the slave of the high priest,
and
took off his ear.
14:48-49``And
'having an answer'/'giving a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai},
Jesus
said to them, "As against a brigand/robber
you
came out with swords and clubs/cudgels to seize Me. 14:49``
'Day
after day'/daily, I {Jesus} was with you,
teaching
in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest/seize Me.
But
{this has happened so that} the scriptures must be fulfilled."
14:50``And,
having forsaken Him {Jesus},
they
{His students/disciples} fled . . . all of them.
