II Corinthians

Chapter 9
1~~For indeed
  {Greek literally is WAKE UP and PAY ATTENTION}
concerning the aid to the saints
  {the needy church of Jerusalem} . . .
it keeps on being superfluous for me to write to you.

{Note: Paul is stating that HE knows they know this principal, but he is going to say it again anyway because repetition in teaching is important!!}

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - Rebound and the Filling of the Holy Spirit stimulate giving with the proper motivation.}

2~~For I have absolute knowledge
of your willingness of mind
  {to give with grace},
for which I keep on giving laudatory illustration
  {he used the Corinthians as an example to the Macedonians}
on behalf of you to them of Macedonia,
that Southern Greece
  {Achaia - the province where Corinth was located}
has been prepared a year ago in mental attitude . . .
and your noble aspirations
  {based on doctrine}
have stimulated very many.

{Note: The noble activities of believers can encourage other believers to act nobly . . . but all must be based on doctrine in the soul. Subtle point here though is it was NOT the amount of the offering Paul was using as the illustration, but their willing state of mind to give.}

3~~But I have sent the brethren
  {the Titus delegation},
lest our laudatory illustration
on behalf of you
should not be falsified . . .
in this fragment . . .
  {amplification coming}
even as I kept repeating
that you have been prepared
from the ultimate source of yourselves.
  {prepared in the soul}

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - no 'shaming' people - no pressure or embarrassment}
4~~Lest by any means
if {third class condition}
the Macedonians accompany me,
and discover you all unprepared,
that we . . .
(we do not say you). .
would be embarrassed by this assumption
- maybe we would, maybe we would not.

{Note: Paul is not using the mental prod of 'you should be ashamed of yourselves'. He has been talking up the Corinthians mental attitude of love giving to the Macedonians. And, if the Macedonians now find in carnality the Corinthians are not at this level of spiritual maturity any longer, then the shame is on Paul and the other teachers of doctrine - not the Corinthians.}

5~~ Therefore, in conclusion,
I {Paul} made an executive command decision
to encourage the brethren
  {the Titus delegation},
that they would go before toward you
and prepare in advance your blessing
  {grace contribution - is a blessing to the givers} . . .
which you had previously promised . . .
that the same might be prepared . . . as a blessing . . .
and not as grudging or pressure giving.

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - guarantees blessing}
6~~But this {blessing},
He who sows parsimoniously {pheidomenos}
shall reap also parsimoniously . . .
and he who sows on the principal of blessing {grace}
also shall harvest on the principal of blessing {grace}.

{Note: Pheidomenos means stingy, sparingly, parsimoniously. It means giving based on what is NOT in the soul - i.e. lack of doctrine so human viewpoint giving - legalism. The Corinthians would have understood the concept as stated for what it is. Today we would say, 'he who gives in legalism, reaps from legalism . . . He who gives in grace reaps blessings by the Grace of God.}

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - is a mental attitude.}
7~~Each one
according the norm or standard
as he has determined
by means of his 'right lobe'/heart . . .
so give . . .
not out from the pressure/stress of mind . . .
or compulsion of emotion
  {pressure gimmicks -starving children in Africa type thing} . . .
for The God keeps on loving
  {mental attitude love}
the gracious {hilaros - willing, cheerful} giver.

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - God provides everything in
grace . . . both spiritual and material blessings.}
8~~And The God has the ability
to cause all grace to super abound to you . . .
for the purpose that
at all times
having all sufficiency
in the sphere of all things
  {spiritual and material} . . .
you may super abound
with reference to every good work.
  {in the context here - in grace giving}

9~~Even as it is written in the past w
ith the result that it stands written forever {Psalm 112:9},
"He has given generously
  {past tense - meaning in Eternity Past} . . .
He has provided in time {present tense}
to the {spiritually} poor
- to their advantage -
His dikaiosune/'Grace Virtue Righteousness'
keeps on abiding forever."

{Note: Dikaiosune is translated as righteousness or the 'Total fulfillment of Spiritual Development' when applied to mankind. When applied toward God RBT wraps it all up into a bundle that is more clearly translated 'Grace Virtue Righteousness'.}

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - grace giving experiences grace MULTIPLICATION}
10~~ Now He that provides {Epichoregeo} graciously
the seed to the sower . . .
provides graciously
for the act of eating.
  {represents necessities of life}

And, at the same time,
multiplies your seed sown . . .
and even enlarges the harvest
of your 'grace virtue righteousness' {dikaiosune}.

{Note: Epichoregeo was a word that came from Classical Greek. It referred to the wealthy person who paid in full for a drama to be put on without anything wanted in return - it was his gift to the pagan god supposedly honored by the drama. The benefactor also usually had a great interest in the subject of the drama. So, in the New Testament, it often is used when talking about God's grace gift of EVERYTHING to believers.}

11~~In the sphere of all things . . .
being enriched
because of generosity of soul {grace virtue} . . .
brings out {katergazomai}
as a result the act of Thanksgiving
to The God
through us.

{Note: Katergazomai means something on the inside working its way out - so this is generosity of the soul coming out.}

12~~Because of the administration of this sacred service
  {grace giving}
is not only filling up the deficiency
of the lack of the saints {in Jerusalem} . . .
but also is super abounding
many thanksgivings unto The God.

{Note: The Corinthians give with a grace mental attitude. They do not expect anything in return from the Jerusalem saints in fact they probably do not even LIKE each other (Corinthians are Greeks/gentiles and tend on the lasciviousness side. The Jerusalem saints are Jews and tend to be on the legalistic or acetic side). Doesn't matter, the Corinthians received from the Lord by His Grace and gave to the Jerusalem saints in grace . . . and the saints gave the thanks where they belong - to the Lord! Grace giving is divine good based on doctrinal motivation. Giving based on emotion (how you feel) is human good (works) based on emotional motivation.}

{Principal of GRACE GIVING - based on what you KNOW not what you FEEL.} {Result of Grace Giving - verses 13-15.}
13~~Through the testing for approval of this ministry
  {grace giving},
they {Jerusalem saints}
glorify The God
upon the subordination of your {Corinthians} acknowledgement
to the gospel of Christ . . .
through the generosity of your contribution
toward themselves and toward all.

{Note: The gospel came to them in grace and they give in grace.}

14~~And by their {Jerusalem saints}
act of intercessory prayer
on behalf of you {Corinthians} . . .
are longing after you with a deep love . . .
because of the surpassing grace of The God upon you.

{Note: Here is what the Corinthians needed from the Jerusalem saints - intercessory prayer on their behalf.}

15~~ Grace to The God . . .
upon 'The Indescribable Gift'.
  {meaing The Lord Jesus Christ}

{Note: Most important thing to remember is God gave His son to us as a grace gift . . . to receive the imputation of and the judgement for our sins. This gift was a grace gift . . . and sets the example for how we should live - recognizing that all is by the grace of God.}
