I Samuel

Chapter 16

1~~And the Lord said {'amar} unto Samuel {last judge and Prophet},
"How long will you feel sorry {self pity in reversionism and} for Saul?

I {God} have rejected him from reigning over Israel.

Fill your horn with oil, and go,
I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite.

For I have seen {ra'ah} a king {melek}
among his sons."

2~~And Samuel said,
"How can I go?
If Saul hear it, he will 'kill in a slow and painful way' {harag} me.
And the Lord said,
"Take an heifer with you, and say,
I am come to sacrifice to the Lord."

3^^And call Jesse to the sacrifice,
and I will show you what you shall do.
And you shall anoint unto me
him whom I name unto you.

4^^And Samuel did that which the Lord spoke,
and came to Bethlehem.
And the elders of the town trembled at his coming,
and said, "Do you come in peace?"

5^^And he said, Peaceably.
I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord.
Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.
And he sanctified Jesse and his sons,
and called them to the sacrifice.

{Samuel looks at the Outside, God Looks at the Right Lobe}
6~~And it came to pass,
when they were come,
that he {Samuel} kept looking {ra'ah} on Eliab,
  {must have been handsome and well presented in his military outfit}
and said, "Surely the Lord's anointed is facing him."

7~~But the Lord said/decreed {'amar} unto Samuel,
"Do not be caused to regard him with respect
because of his face or on the height of his stature . . .
because I have rejected him {permanently - perfect tense}.
For the Lord sees not as man sees.
For man looks on the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks on the 'right lobe'/heart
  {of the soul where all doctrine resides}.

8^^Then Jesse called Abinadab,
and made him pass before Samuel.
And he said, Neither has the Lord chosen him.

9^^Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by.
And he said, Neither has the Lord chosen him.

10^^Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel.
And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord has not chosen them.

11~~And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all your children?
And he said, There remains yet the youngest,
and, behold, he keeps the sheep
  {did not call him in because he 'stinks'}.
And Samuel said unto Jesse,
Send and fetch him.
For we will not sit down till he come hither.

12~~And he sent, and brought him in.
Now he {David} was red headed,
and with beautiful eyes,
and very handsome to look at.
And the Lord said, "Arise, anoint him. For this is he."

13~~Then Samuel took the horn of oil,
and anointed him in the middle of his brethren
  {David's 7 brothers}.
And the Spirit {ruwach} of Jehovah/God
'descended upon' {tsalach} David
  {to bless him - David is probably in SuperGrace
  and this is the first recorded contact with God the Holy Spirit}
from that day forward.
So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

{Note: In the Age of Israel, there was NOT a universal indwelling of God the Holy Spirit in all believers - "the Spirit was not yet given, because Christ was not yet glorified". Some Old Testament believers were temporally endued with the Spirit to accomplish specific functions.}

14~~The Spirit {ruwach} of Jehovah/God
departed/'was removed'
  {cuwr - usually means 'desert' but depart is better here}
from Saul,
while an evil/wicked {ra'} spirit {ruwach} {of discipline}
  {this is something in his soul - depressed and filled with self pity
  which turned to psychosis - 1st stage of reversionistic discipline}
from Jehovah/God 'intensively terrified' {ba`ath - Piel intensive stem} him.

{Note: In reversionism and mental attitude sins it eventually intensifies and if you do not get back to doctrine, you will go out under the sin unto death. Here Saul is in reversionism and heading for mental illness.}

15~~And Saul's servants/'high ranking officers' {`ebed}
said {'amar} unto him,
"An evil/wicked {ra'} spirit {ruwach} {of divine discipline} . . .
from 'Elohiym/Godhead . . .
having troubled you."

{Solution Sought Through Human Viewpoint}
16~~ "Let our lord {'adown}
now command your servants/'high ranking officers' {`ebed}
in your presence/face {paniym},
to seek out a man,
who is a skillful { yada` - means 'to know' so comes to means skillful}
player on a lyre/harp {kinnowr}.
{When} the evil/wicked {ra'} spirit {ruwach} {divine discipline} . . .
from 'Elohiym/Godhead . . . {is upon you},
that he shall play with his hand,
and you shall be well."

17~~And Saul said {'amar}
unto his servants/'high ranking officers' {`ebed},
Look { ra'ah } for a man for me
now a man that can play well {yatab},
{and} bring {him to me}.

18~~Then answered {`anah}
one of the servants/'high ranking officers' {`ebed},
and said, "Behold, I have observed { ra'ah}
a son of Jesse {David's Father}
the Bethlehemite {hometown},
skillful { yada`} in playing {a lyre},
a mighty valiant man {badge of honor - is courageous},
a man of war {trained and qualified as a soldier},
'constantly learning doctrine'
  {biyn dabar - great student of the Word of God},
a man handsome in appearance,
and the Lord . . . {is} with him {SuperGrace Hero}!

19~~Therefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse and said {'amar},
"Send me David your son,
who is with the sheep."

{Note: How did they know David was with the sheep? They had a good G2 report - intelligence report on David.}

20~~And Jesse took an ass {Jesse was an ass taking an ass!}
laden with bread,
and a bottle of wine,
and a goat {considered a delicacy in Israel},
and sent them by David
his son unto Saul.

{Note: David is not promoted by Jesse's 'bribes'! David is promoted by God!}

21~~And David came to Saul,
and personally served him
  {`amad paniym - idiom: literally 'stood before his face'}.
And he {Saul} kept on liking { 'ahab} him {David} greatly.
And he {David} became his 'military aide'
  {nasa' k@liy - idiom - literally 'carried his armor'}.

22~~And Saul sent to Jesse, saying {'amar},
Let David, stand/stay in my presence {paniym}.
For he has found favor in my sight.

23~~The spirit {ruwach}
from 'Elohiym/Godhead {discipline from God}
was upon Saul . . .
David took an lyre/harp {kinnowr},
and played with his hand.
So Saul was refreshed/'breathed easy'/'temporary relief',
and was well/'good was to him' {temporarily healed},
and the evil {ra'} spirit {ruwach}
departed/deserted {cuwr} {from him}.

{Note: Saul wanted David to stay as his aide. David was more concerned with what God wanted him to do - if God does not promote you, you are not promoted. We see in the next chapter that David went back and forth between Saul and his home where he takes care of his father's sheep. David was not with Saul when the Philistines attacked.}
