I Samuel

Chapter 18

{Sequel to David's victory over Goliath}
{Verses 1-4: Admiration of Jonathan}
1~~And it came to pass
  {kalah - indicates the sequence of events continue},
when he had made an end
of communicating categorically {dabar} unto Saul
  {this long conversation impresses Jonathan as much as David's
  deed},
that the soul of Jonathan was bound/chained with the soul of David
  {indicates a strong category III love - a true friendship},
and Jonathan kept on loving him as his own soul.

{Note: The mentioning of 'souls' here indicates a very strong inner bond with each other's - true category III friends.}

2~~And Saul kept on taking him that day,
and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

{Verses 3-4: Expression of Category III Friendship Love}
3~~Then Jonathan and David cut/made a covenant,
because he {Jonathan is the initiator}
loved him as his own soul.

4~~And Jonathan disrobed himself of the 'long garment'
  {worn over the tunic - 'the Robe of the Crown Prince}
that was upon him,
and gave it to David,
and his garments,
even to his sword {fine weapons},
and to his bow,
and to his 'military harnice'/belt.

{Verses 5-7: David Grows in Stature}
5~~And David kept on going out where ever Saul sent him,
and he prospered/'became successful' {sakal}.
And Saul promoted him {David} over the men of war
  {David went into battle many, many times - experience to match
  capacity until David is the King he learns the science of the
  military},
and he did well in the sight of all the people,
and also in the sight of Saul's ministers/servants {`ebed}.

6~~And it came to pass as they came,
when David was returning
from the slaughter of the Philistine
  {David is successful in war},
that the women kept on coming out of all cities of Israel,
singing and dancing,
to meet king Saul,
with tambourines,
with 'inner happiness'/joy {simchah},
and with instruments of music
  {civilians happy when military wins - when armies degenerate, it is
  the CIVILIANS who suffer!}.

{Puffing Up David - Reason for Saul's Jealousy of David}
7~~And the women answered one another as they played,
and said, "Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his ten thousands."

{Verses 8-13: Antagonism of Saul}
8~~And Saul was enraged,
and the lyrics 'were evil in his eyes'/'displeased him'
  {reversionistic King is evil called SuperGrace Believer 'evil' - justifies
  his jealousy}.
And he said, "They have ascribed unto David ten thousands,
and to me they have ascribed but thousands.
And what can he have more but the kingdom?"

9^^And Saul watched {`avan - with envy}
David from that day and forward.

10^^And it came to pass on the morning of the next day,
that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul,
and he prophesied in the midst of the house.
And David played with his hand,
as at other times.
And there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

11^^And Saul kept on throwing the javelin.
For he said, "I will impale David even to the wall with it."
And David kept on circling around out of his presence repeatedly.

12^^And Saul kept on being afraid of David,
because the Lord was with him {David},
and had departed from Saul
  {actually Saul's mental attitude sins had taken
  himself out of fellowship - he was now in reversionism}.

13^^Therefore Saul kept on causing
the removal of him {David},
and made him his captain over a thousand.
And he {David} 'went out to battle and returned successful'
  {Idiom: literally: 'went out and came in before the people'.

{Note: The picture here is Saul was going to kill David personally but David managed to side step that threat. So, as King, Saul 'promoted' David and sent him out to the most hazardous battles he could. But David always returned victorious!}

{David's SuperGrace Prosperity}
14~~And David prospered in all his ways
and Jehovah/God . . . with him.

{Note: Great time for David - God poured greatly at this time!}

15^~Wherefore when Saul kept on seeing
that he {David} was extremely prosperous {sakal m@`od}
  {SuperGrace blessings can not be understood by a Reversionist -
  instead fear and jealousy result},
he 'became a stranger' to him
  {means he did not understand David - antagonism}.

16^~But all 'Israel and Judah'
  {technical meaning for the Jewish army}
kept on loving David,
because he 'went out to combat and came back successfully'.
  {idiom: literally 'went out and came in before them'}.

{Note: Psalm 27 is apropos for this period of David's life}

{Saul Plots to Have David Killed in Battle}
17^^And Saul kept on saying to David,
"Behold my elder daughter Merab {the carrot},
I will keep on giving you her as a wife . . . {one condition}
only 'you demonstrate great strength and valor in the army'
for me, and fight the Lord's battles.
For Saul said, "Let not my hand be upon him {David},
but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him
  {in other words, the enemy killing him will suit me fine}."

18^^And David kept on saying to {King} Saul,
"Who am I to deserve to be married to her?
  {idiom: literally 'what life am I?' - David is not a royal at this time,
  but a poor shepherd}
Or how does my lineage in Israel warrant the marriage?
 {idiom: Literally: 'my father's family in Israel'},
that I should be son in law to the king?"

19^^Now when it came to pass
at the time when Merab Saul's daughter
should have been given to David,
that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite
to be his wife.

20^^Instead, Michal, Saul's daughter,
kept on loving David.
And they kept on telling Saul,
and the word {dabar} kept on pleasing him.

21^^And Saul kept on saying,
"I will keep on giving him her,
that she may be bait/'a snare' to him . . .
that the hand of the Philistines
may be against him.
Wherefore Saul said to David,
"You shall this day be my son in law yourself
{to one of the} pair."

{Saul Tells Ministers to Give False Witness to David}
22^^And Saul kept on commanding his ministers/servants,
"Communicate categorically {dabar} with David secretly saying,
'Behold, the king has delight/pleasure in you,
and all his ministers/servants love you.
Now therefore be the king's son in law."

23^^And Saul's servants
kept on intensely communicating categorically {dabar}
those words/doctrines {dabar} in the ears of David.
And David kept on saying,
"Does it seem to you an insignificant thing . . .
to be a king's son in law . . .
seeing that I am an impoverished man,
and lightly esteemed?"

24^^And the ministers/servants of Saul
kept on saying, "This was how David responded on this matter."
 {idiom: literally 'On this word/doctrine/matter
  communicated categorically David}

25^^And Saul kept on saying,
"Thus you shall keep on saying to David,
'The king desires no other dowry,
except 'evidence of the death of an hundred Philistines'
  {idiom: literally: 'an hundred foreskins of the Philistines'},
to be avenged of the king's enemies."
(But Saul thought/planned/reasoned to make David
fall/drop {be killed} by the hand of the Philistines).

26^^And when his ministers/servants
kept on communicating to David these words/doctrines {dabar},
the words were pleasing in the eyes of David . . .
to be the king's son in law.
And the time was good for fulfilling
  {David was happy to meet the condition of Saul and be his son-in-
  law}.

{King Conditions 100 Dead - David delivers 200 Dead}
27^^Wherefore David kept on rising and going
- he and his men -
and slew of the Philistines two hundred men.
And David brought 'the evidence of death'
  {idiom and literal: 'their foreskins - from their Phallus which live men
  would not voluntarily give up!},
and fulfilled the king {his condition},
that he {David} might be the king's son in law.
And Saul kept on giving him
Michal his daughter to wife.

28^^And Saul kept on seeing
and kept on understanding { yada`}
that Jehovah/God . . .with David,
and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him.

29^^And Saul kept on increasing in his fear/respect/awe of David.
And Saul became David's enemy . . . continually.

30~~Then the leaders/generals/princes
of the Philistines went forth to battle.
And it came to pass,
after they went forth,
that David prospered {sakal} himself {in battle} more
than all the servants of Saul . . .
so that his {David's} name
kept on being greatly honored/esteemed
  {by the Philistines also here}.
