I Samuel

Chapter 28 (Continued)

16~~Then Samuel kept on replying,
"Why the heck {stronger expletive here really}
therefore do you 'ask me'
  {sha'al - Saul's name means to ask - so Samuel cracks a pun - a
  play on words}
since Jehovah/God has departed from you {confirming this}.
Therefore, He has become your enemy?"

{Note: Not all believers are the friends of God. Some believers are His enemy. That happens when the believer comes to detest God and His Word that they reject His teaching and His principals.}

{Note: Samuel will answer by flashing back to I Samuel 15 where Saul disobeyed God and His Word by NOT slaughtering ALL of the Amalekites and their property as Saul was commanded by God to do.}

{Samuel's Sanctified 'I told you So'}
17~~ "And Jehovah/God
has 'carried out His purpose'
  {idiom: 'asah - literally: "manufactured for Himself"
  Saul was negative to grace so God had to remove him from the
  way - David would be king}
as He {God} spoke by me
  {Samuel told this to Saul directly}.
For Jehovah/God keeps on tearing the kingdom out of your hand
  {qara` - imperfect tense - tense of Grace - little by little tearing it
  many changes to truly rebound and recover but Saul did not in 15
  years},
and keeps on giving {nathan} it
to your friend {rea`} . . . even to David."

{Note: This is a flashback to what Samuel prophesied to Saul 15 years earlier in Chapter 15:28.}

{Why Did Saul Lose His Kingdom? Negative to Bible Doctrine}
18~~"As {ka 'aher} you have not listened/
'heard, listened, and obeyed' {shama`}
to the voice of Jehovah/God
  {means a reason is given for how Saul failed - Samuel is saying
  Saul's books are closed - and he will die tomorrow
  negative volition to the Word is the worst thing that can
  happen to a believer in time},
nor executed the 'heat of His anger' upon Amalek,
therefore Jehovah/God
has done/manufactured {`asah}
  {out of His Justice and Righteousness}
this doctrine/'doctrinal communication'/thing {dabar}
  {refers to the doctrine of the sin unto death to reversionists}
unto you this day."

19~~"Also Jehovah/God
will keep on giving Israel - with you -
into the hand of the Philistines
  {means this is a gradual process not all at once}.
And tomorrow you and your sons
shall be with me
  {with Samuel - in Abraham's bosom -
  means Saul and his sons will die tomorrow}.
Also Jehovah/God also shall keep on giving
the 'army camp' {machaneh} of Israel
into the hand of the Philistines."

{No Doctrine So No Preparation For Impending Death}
20~~Then Saul immediately/'hurried up' and
kept on falling {took a while}
his full length to the ground
  {all 7 feet feel straight down (I Samuel 9:2) - almost like a knockout
  in boxing},
and was extremely frightened
  {reversionists are lacking doctrine so are afraid of
  news of their own death},
by the 'doctrinal teachings'/words {dabar} of Samuel.
And there was no strength in him
because he had eaten no food/bread/rations {lechem}
all the day nor all the night {24hours straight}.

{Note: Saul was weak in his soul and in his body at this point in time. Both are brought out here.}

{Verse 21-25 - Witch Turned Woman}
21~~And the woman
  {'ishshah - the witch of Endor was called by a more respectable
  title of 'woman' instead of 'female servant of a demon' -
  apparently seeing God's hand in this she became a believer}
kept approaching Saul,
and kept seeing that he was extremely agitated
  {suffering from a case of hardness of heart like the Pharaoh of the
  Exodus},
therefore said unto him,
"Behold, your 'female slave'
  {shiphchah - idiom of respect for a female speaking with humility}
has 'heard, listened, and obeyed' {shama`} your voice
  {in the recent past - the command for a séance},
and 'I have risked my life {nephesh} for you'
  {idiom: 'I have placed my soul in your hands'}
by listening to the words {dabar}
which you spoke to me."

{Note: The first principal is you can not tell the spiritual status of a person by their hospitality. Unbelievers can be kind, thoughtful and considerate hosts (and believers can be rude and crude). But, the Witch of Endor was no longer demon possessed here and maybe even now is saved. She is no longer called the 'female slave of a demon'.}

22~~"Now therefore, please/'I pray you',
'hear, listen and obey {'shama}
  {politely requesting he listen to what she has to say}
you also to the voice of your 'female servant',
and permit me to place
a little bit of food before you.
And you eat {'akal}
  {imperative mood - an order - the weaker the man
  the stronger the woman's compassion - really stepping
  over the line with King Saul here actually},
that there shall be to you strength,
when you go on your way."

23~~But he {Saul} kept on refusing,
and continuously said,
"I will not eat."
But his servants,
together with the woman,
kept on urging {parats} him.
And he 'heard, listened, and obeyed' {'shama}
to their voice.
So he got up from the earth,
and sat upon the divan {mittah}
  {a divan is a long backless bench along the length of wall
  and is covered with cushions}.

24~~'Now the woman had'
  {idiom: literally 'And to the woman'}
  {the former Witch of Endor still}
had a 'stall-fed fatted calf' {marbeq `egel} in the house;
and she hustled
  {first success with Saul so her compassion kicks in even more},
and slaughtered/sacrificed {zabach} it,
and 'vigorously seized' {laqach} flour,
and kneaded/'hand-work mixed' it,
and did bake unleavened cakes { matstsah}
  {apparently in a hurry so no time to put in leaven and wait for
  the dough to rise. Also very important message for Saul -
  the calf - Sacrifice of Christ for us, unleavened bread is reminder
  of the humanity of Christ - all reminders of GRACE to Saul who will
  die tomorrow - last supper for a dying reverisionist}.

25~~And she 'cheerfully brought' it before Saul,
and before his servants
and they did eat.
Then they rose up,
and went away that night.
