I Thessalonians

Chapter 5 (Continued)

[Closing Comments]
13b~~Live in peace in/by/with/among yourselves.
[eireneuo (present active imperative (an order)) en heautou]

14a~~Moreover/Now we exhort/encourage you, brethren:
[de parakaleo (present active indicative) humas adelphos]
put sense into the norms of those who think incorrectly"
[noutheteo (present active imperative (an order))]
"those that break ranks"/are unruly/"don't obey authority in Church"
  [ataktos].

14b~~"Speak with yourself, whether by way of admonition
  and incentive"/"Calm and console yourself"
[paramutheomai (present middle/passive imperative (an order))]
the "small souled"/"faint of heart".
[oligopsuchos - the hysterical type, weeping and wailing -
  threaten suicide etc.]

14c~~"Hold up" yourself/"Exercise zealous care of yourself
[antechomai (present middle/passive imperative (an order))]
the weak/infirm/feeble.
[asthenes - two types, physical or spiritual. We are to care for
those of ours who can not care for themselves. But here, it
appears to address baby believers and believers who have not
yet grown to be spiritually self-sustaining]

14d~~Be patient/"slow to anger in face of trials and tribulations"
[makrothumeo (present active imperative (an order)) -
exercise long suffering - take the digs patiently]
face to face with all [people - believers and unbelievers].

15a~~"See to it that"
[horao (present active imperative (an order)) a broad view
  from which we get "horizon"]
none may "pay back"/"render back"
  [me apodidomi (aorist active subjunctive)]
a certain evil for/"over against" an evil thing.
[tis kakos anti kakos tis]

[Note: This verse covers the person who is operating on normal human tendencies to do bad to someone who did bad to them. God's servants operate on higher standards than that. Summary:
The Earthly/Fleshly man repays evil with evil,
The Devil's Man repays "a good deed toward them" with evil,
The Lord's Man repays "evil toward them" with good thoughts and
deeds (and THAT is a Very High/Divine standard to meet!).]

15b~~But, in contrast, [alla]
at all times [pantote]
pursue The "Good"/"The Good of intrinsic value".
[dioko (present active imperative (an order)) o agathos]

[Note: Only something/Someone that is Divine can produce anything Divine. Only God can produce Divine Good. Our goal is to learn doctrine. Then from our own free will, stay in fellowship and apply Jesus' Viewpoint to ALL our life's experiences. Then God can produce Divine Good through you. Pursue His creating Divine Good! And, this is a COMMAND not a request! The Bible says something like "if a man hits you in the eye and you hit him back . . . even an unbeliever can do that. How does that bring glory to God?" That is the point. Take the Higher Road. People who know you are a follower of the Way of Christ go "wow". Those who do not know Christ become interested in Him . . . just to find out how you can do that! They come to Christ BECAUSE of your example!]

15c~~Both/and towards/among others of the same kind
  [kai eis allelon (other believers)]
and toward all.
[kai eis pas (also to the unbelievers)]

[Note: Jesus was Paul's prototype and Paul imitated Christ. Paul then told us to imitate him also! Now we are to follow the Ways of Christ so others - believers and unbelievers alike - will want to come to imitate us.]

16~~Rejoice/"be glad"/"be well"/thrive at all times.
[chairo (present active imperative (an order)) pantote]

17~~Pray yourself
[proseuchomai (present middle/passive imperative (an order))]
habitually.
[adialeiptos - means to pray with the rapidity of a hacking cough]

18a~~In/by/with all things give thanks.
[en pas eucharisteo present active imperative (an order))]

[Note: VERY IMPORTANT. Even those believers who are "ignorant" of Divine Viewpoint will thank God for the "blessings" or "good" that they recognize has been done on their behalf. That is NOT what this verse (and others) say. It says to give thanks for ALL - good or bad - that has made you who you are. This is another tough Higher/Divine standard to meet!]

18b~~For this is the will/desire of God in/by/with Christ Jesus
[gar touto thelema theos en Christos Iesous]
toward/concerning you. [eis humas]

19~~Extinguish/Quench/Stifle/Hinder not the Spirit!
[sbennumi (present active imperative (an order)) me pneuma]

{Note: This means to stay out of God's way! Don't hinder Him! And, use I John 1:9 habitually to stay in fellowship and led by God the Holy Spirit. When you are out of fellowship, He can not assist you and that hinders what He can do for you.}

20~~"Despise utterly not"/"Do not 'not heed' " prophecy.
[exoutheneo (present active imperative (an order)) me propheteia]

[Note: The entire Bible is important. For the Thessalonians, the entire Church Age was disclosed to them through prophecy. And, now that we have centuries in the Church Age, it is still just as important for us to learn about the Tribulation, the Millennium, and then Eternity Future.]

21a~~Test/Prove for the purpose of approval or determining value
[dokimazoas (present active imperative (an order))]
all. [pas]

[Note: Dokimazoas is used to describe the process of sending silver through fire to remove the impurities. It means to constantly have Divine Viewpoint in your norms and standards. Compare all that you do and think to what Divine Viewpoint says is correct.]

21b~~Hold fast/"Take possession and hold of"
[katecho (present active imperative (an order))]
that which is "the good".
  [o kalos]

[Note: So we are first told to "test" everything compared with Divine Viewpoint. Then when we find "good", we are commanded to grasp and hold onto it. This refers to studying doctrine. When you find doctrine that lines up with the other Truth in your soul, grab it and hold on to it. That is how you build an edification complex in your soul which means "spiritual maturity".]

22~~Abstain/Refrain yourself
[apechomai (present middle imperative (an order))]
from the ultimate source of "all forms"/"every category" of evil.
  [apo pas eidos poneros]

[Note: Evil is "everything that is outside the Plan of God". God says that even our human righteousnesses are filthy rags in His sight. Jesus died for all "sins" but not for "all evil". Sins have been judged and are not mentioned at the White Throne judgement. Instead, the book of "works" (things though and done under the energy of the flesh instead of under the power of the Spirit). So, two main categories of evil are sin and human works. And, items in the two categories can overlap.]

23a~~Moreover/Now [de]
may the very God of Peace set-apart/sanctify
[autos Theos eirene hagiazo (aorist active optative)]
each of you . . . wholly.
[humas holoteles (body, soul and spirit)]

23b~~Even/And . . . [kai]
spirit and soul and body . . .
  [pneuma kai psuche kai soma]
may receive preservation . . . blameless
  [tereo (aorist passive optative) amemptos]
in/by/with/unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[en parousia hemon kurios Iesous Christos (Rapture of the Church)]

24~~Faithful/Doctrinal . . . [pistos]
the One Who is calling you . . .
  [kaleo (present active participle) humas]
Who will do it {in the future}.
  [poieo (future active indicative)]

{Note: God provided for us in Eternity Past. This covers in Time and in Eternity Future.}

25~~Brethren, [adelphos]
pray yourself
[proseuchomai (present middle/passive imperative (an order))]
  {this is an order - and it is for your benefit}
on behalf of us.
  [peri hemon]

{Note: Paul says that Apostles/Pastor-teachers need the prayers of their congregations and vice versa. And, it indicates when you pray for others, both them and you are benefited!}

26~~Salute/Greet all the brethren
[aspazomai (aorist middle imperative (an order)) pas adelphos]
in/by/with an holy kiss/"sign of fraternal affection"
  [en hagios philema]

[Note: In this day, both the men and the women greeted each other with a kiss. Today we would say shake their hands or gently bow. It is the "expression of greeting" that is important, not necessarily the means of the expression.]

27~~I command/"solemnly implore" you
  [horkizo (present active indicative) humas]
by the Lord
  [ton kurios]
this epistle
  [ten epistole]
to be "analyzed and taught accurately to"/
"read and understood accurately to"
  [anaginosko (aorist passive infinitive)]
all the holy brethren.
  [pas hagios adelphos]

{Note: When they are praying, they are called brethren. But when they are being taught doctrine, the are called HOLY BRETHERN! That is how to be separated unto God!}

28a~~The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ . . .
  [charis hemon kurios Iesous Christos]
[be] with you.
  [meta humon]

28b~~Amen/"I believe it". [amen]

[Note: The sentence, "The first . . . [epistle] to the Thessalonians was written from Athens." was not in the best of the original manuscripts so it was not recorded here - only noted.]
