Jeremiah
Chapter
17 (Continued)
{Chapter
17:19-27 Part III of Oracle 5 - Warning Concerning the Sabbath}
{Verses
19-27: Message During National Disintegration to Sick Nation}
19~~Thus
said Jehovah/God unto me,
"Go
{make it a way of life}
and
stand {take a stand counter to the trend of the people}
in
the gate of the children of the people,
whereby
the kings of Judah come in,
and
by the which they go out,
and
in all the gates of Jerusalem
{places where doctrine is usually proclaimed}."
20~~And
say unto them,
"Hear
you the Word of the Jehovah/God
you
kings of Judah {Coniah and Zedekiah},
and
all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
that
enter in by these gates
{doing so on a Sabbath day coming up}."
21~~Thus
said the Jehovah/God,
"
'Be alert' in your souls
{nephesh - command to take in Bible doctrine},
and
do not carry {nasa'} burdens on the Sabbath day
Nor
bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem."
{Note:
Jeremiah is telling people NOT to carry burdens . . . while they ARE
carrying burdens on the Sabbath! SideNote: This was only true in the
Jewish Dispensation. They were to 'do nothing' one day a week to
remember that God did everything for them - grace. The word for
'carry' is nasa'. In Isaiah 53 is used for Christ bearing our sins.
So honoring the Sabbath is a command to remember Who and What Christ
is. }
22~~"Do
not be caused to carry forth a burden
out
of your houses on the Sabbath day
{can you bring me some sugar, I am all out? Don't do it in the
Jewish Age.},
neither
do you any work,
but
you 'intensely set apart' {qadash - Piel stem} the Sabbath day,
as
I commanded your ancestors/fathers."
23~~But
they {their ancestors}
did
not 'hear and obey',
neither
did they concentrate {on doctrine}
{idiom: literally 'extend their ears'},
but
'had free will but negative volition' {to the Word}
{idiom: literally 'made their neck's stiff},
for
the purpose that they might not hear
{daily rejection of the Word},
nor
grabbed {appreciated} categorical teaching {muwcar}
{of Bible doctrine}.
{Verses
24-26: Blessings of Keeping the Word}
24~~"And
it shall come to pass {change of pace},
if
you 'LISTEN . . . YOU MUST HEAR AND CONCENTRATE ON . . .
AND
HEAR AND OBEY {shama` shama`} me,"
said
Jehovah/God,
"to
bring in no burden through the gates of this city
on
the Sabbath day,
but
'intensely set apart' {qadash - Piel stem} the Sabbath day,
to
manufacture {`asah} no work therein . . . 25~~
then
shall there enter {in prosperity - bow` perfect tense}
into
the gates of this city
kings
{meaning good kings - if they study the Word}
and
princes sitting/'dwell in a place of blessing' {yashab}
upon
the throne of David {perpetuation of Davidic line},
riding
in chariots and on horses,
they,
and their princes,
the
men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem:
and
this city shall sitting/'dwell in a place of blessing' {yashab}
for
ever {Millennial reign of Christ}.
{Note:
Rare use of doubling the verb in the Hebrew. This means fantastic
emphasis in the Hebrew. Shama` shama` means to hear and concentrate
AND ALSO to hear and obey.}
26~~
And they shall come
from
the cities of Judah {cities of the Southern Kingdom},
and
from the places close to Jerusalem,
and
from the land of Benjamin {part of the Southern Kingdom},
and
from the plain
{in the southern part of the Southern Kingdom was a plain},
and
from the mountains {mostly mountainous},
and
from the south
{in this passage cursing comes from the north and blessing
from the south},
and
shall be caused to bring burnt offerings
{following Levitical code of the dispensation},
and
sacrifices,
and
meat offerings,
and
incense,
and
bringing sacrifices of praise,
unto
the house of Jehovah/God
{the temple must be standing for this to be fulfilled - won't be
fulfilled until the Millennium}.
{Alternative
to Studying the Word}
27~~But
if you will not hearken unto me
to
'intensely set apart' {qadash - Piel stem} the Sabbath day,
and
not to bear a burden,
even
entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day;
then
I will cause to kindle a fire
{yatsath - Hiphil stem - a fire that destroys all}
in
the gates thereof,
and
it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem,
and
it {the fire/discipline of God} shall not be quenched/extinguished.
