John

Chapter 10 (Continued)
{Prophecy of the Church Age Believers being part of His Flock}
16~~" I keep on having other of the same kind {allos} of sheep
which keep on being not of this fold
  {Jews of the Jewish Dispensation}.
It keeps on being necessary for me to lead them also
  {into green pastures - Phase II},
and they will hear and obey {akouo} My voice,
so that there will be one fold/flock {all believers in the Church Age}
and one shepherd {Jesus Christ and Union with Christ}."

{Note: There are two Greek words for 'other'. 'Heteros' means 'other of a different kind'. 'Allos' means 'other of the same kind'. These sheep are others of the same kind. It refers to all believers - Gentile or Jew - but in a different dispensation - the Church Age.}

{Note: Akouo means to not only hear, but to also obey the command you hear.}

17~~"Because of this {principal of verse 16}
My Father keeps on loving {agapao} Me {from His Humanity}
because I put on the line My soul
  {remained faithful to the Plan of the Father - spiritual death}
for the purpose that I may receive it {His soul} again."
{Volition of the Shepherd}

18~~"No one removes it {My soul}
from the ultimate source {apo} of Me,
  {no one murdered/killed Jesus Christ - removed His soul from Him}
but, in contrast, I {Jesus} put it on the line
from the ultimate source {apo} of Myself {His Own Free Will}
  {means His human volition was involved at the cross}.
I keep on having and holding the authority/volition {exousia}
to put it on the line,
and I have the authority/volition to receive it again.
This mandate/'command within a plan'
I receive from the immediate source of {para} My Father."

{Note: Apo is the preposition meaning 'from the ultimate source'. The free will of His Deity made the decision to do this one time in eternity past. The humanity of Jesus Christ made the decision to go to the cross at least four times in His incarnation. But He never changed His mind - He always agreed to go to the cross 'nevertheless, Thy (God the Father's) Will be done'. The four times are: 1) at the virgin birth He said I come to do Thy Will Oh God - Hebrews 10:5,7 and 10. Matthew 3:16-17 the Baptism was an indication of His Agreement to follow the Fathers plan. 3) Here in verse 10:18 He again shows he continues to say yes and 4) in the garden at Gethsemane - Matthew 26:39,42.}

{Note: Para is the preposition meaning 'from the immediate source'.}

{Note: Exousia is one of the four Greek words for power. It really means power in the sense of having the authority to do something.}

{Verses 19-21: Crowd is Divided Again }
19~~ There came into existence/began a sharp division/schism {schisma} among the Jews {religious leaders and other Jews} because of these words.

{Note: Jesus Christ was one of if not THE most controversial person of all history. If people are negative at the point of God consciousness, they REACT against Him and the message that He gave. If they are positive, they RESPOND to Him and the Word.}

{Reaction/Negative Group}
20~~And many of them {negative group}
said over and over {angry},
"He {Jesus} keeps on having a demon
and has lost His mind {mainomai}.
Why do you keep on listening/'hearing and obeying' {akouo} Him?"

{Note: The religious unbelievers have to attack both His miracles and His Words. So, first they say Jesus is demon possessed and the demon performed the miracles. All psychotic conditions were ascribed to demon possession by the Jews. Next they say He is mentally deranged to think He is God - mainomai - a maniac. That attacks His message.}

{The Positive Crowd}
21~~Others of the same kind/crowd {allos} said,
"These absolutely keep on being NOT {ouk}
the words of someone possessed by a demon.
Does a demon possess the power to open the eyes
of the blind? {me} No, of course not!"

{Note: Again, allos means another of the same kind. In this case it refers to members of the same group. Ouk is the Greek word for the negative meaning 'absolutely not'. Me is the Greek negative word that is not so much as 'close the door' like ouk. But when used in a supposition, it means the question requires a negative response - 'No, of course not."}

{Verses 22-42: Couple of Months Later - At the Feast of Dedication}
22-23~~Then came the feast of the Dedication {Hanukkah}
in Jerusalem. It was winter 23~~ and Jesus kept walking/'strolling around' {peripateo} in the temple area
in Solomon's Porch {a large covered promenade}.

{Note: Peripateo means to take a leisurely walk. Jesus was likely enjoying a nice walk in the temple minding His own business when the religious crowd attacks Him again. The verbs used in the next verse indicate they were hostile as they kept getting in His way as He tried to walk around them.}

24~~ The Jews {religious leaders} surrounded {kukloo} Him and said, "How long do You hold us in suspense?
  {idiom - literally is 'until when do You lift up our soul?}
If You are the Christ - and we have to assume it -
tell us plainly {an order/command}."

{Note: Kukloo is the Greek word for surrounding. It has the connotation of Jesus walking on a path and someone moves in front of Him. He changed His direction and others blocked that path until He was surrounded here. A very hostile situation. The question is totally unfair but expresses maximum legalism. He has proven Who He is over and over and yet they reject the true meaning of what they keep on seeing.}

{Verses 25-30: Jesus Gave the Answer to the Religious Crowd}
25~~ Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai},
"I {Jesus} told you at many points in time {constantive aorist tense}
and you keep on not believing {present tense}
  {as He spoke they rejected Him and in between also they still
  reject Him - present tense}.
The works/'divine production' {ergon}
that I {Jesus} keep on doing in My Father's name
keep on witnessing/testifying concerning {peri} Me."

{Note: Jesus changes from their imperative mood of command in the previous verse to the indicative mood of apokrinomai here. Apokrinomai - which we have had over and over - means He had an answer. The indicative mood says they did not have to command this, He has BEEN telling them! IMPORTANT Note: Jesus mentions the MOST important item first - He Told them! Bible doctrine is what counts. He told them! Then He mentions the miracles, which were His calling card as Messiah.}

{Note: Ergon means 'works' if it is done under the energy of the flesh, but is 'divine good production' when under the energy of God the Holy Spirit. Peri is the preposition meaning 'concerning'.}

26~~"But you keep on refusing to believe
because you are not My sheep.

{Note: In this discourse, ALL mankind are the sheep in the sheepfold. As the good shepherd goes in (virgin birth) He gives His chant as He walks through the sheepfold. Those sheep who are His (positive volition - believers) hear and obey His voice and follow Him out the door (the cross) into the pastures (salvation - Phase II in time and Phase III for eternity. So, these unbelievers are in the sheepfold, but reject the shepherd and are not His. They follow another shepherd - who is or is sponsored by Satan. SideNote: 'as I said unto you' is not in the original.}

{True Sheep of Israel: Relationship, Provision Protection}
27~~"My sheep listen/'hear and obey' {akouo}
My voice {positive at gospel hearing},
and I know/'truly love' {ginosko} them,
and they follow {akoloutheo} Me.

{Note: Again, akouo means to hear and obey. From above, we see that ginosko means to know from experience and when the object is a person, it connotes a true love. And, Akoloutheo means to follow. In the analogy to the sheepfold, this is to follow their shepherd out the door and into the pastors to graze - therefore, follow is a synonym for 'faith in Christ' - salvation. As His sheep we have a relationship with Jesus Christ. He provides and protects.}

{Doctrine of Eternal Security - Once in the Relationship, No Out}
28~~"As well, I {Jesus} give {it is a gift he gives}
them {My sheep}
eternal life {salvation is PERMANENT},
and they will absolutely NO {ouk} . . . NOT EVER {me} . . .
perish {apollumi}. Neither {kai ouk},
can anyone {man, angel, or God Himself - because He declared it}
will ever 'seize by violence'/snatch them
from My hand/grasp {cheir}.

{Note: Apollumi means to perish - to be absolutely obliterated. It refers to Revelation 20:15 where all who are not in the book of life/unbelievers will be tossed into the Lake of Fire. Once you follow the shepherd out the door (faith in Christ) into the pasture, you receive the GIFT of eternal life. You did not earn it, nor can you DO anything to lose it.}

{Note: Ouk and me are both negatives. Two negatives together in the Greek is a very strong negative (as opposed to English where it would be a positive). Now the verb apollumi is in the subjunctive mood. When you put a double negative followed by a subjunctive, it means it is totally impossible - no way! - for a believer to lose his salvation - VERY strong - over and out.}

{Note: Cheir is the Greek word for the human hand. When attributed to God the Father it is an anthropomorphism, which is attributing characteristics of man to God. Your hands move when your brain tells it to. It means when you are His sheep, no one will steal you away even if you wanted to be stolen!}

{Emphasis on the Humanity of Christ}
29~~"My Father Who has given Me {Jesus} . . .
  {the gift is the 'believers in His Hand from verse 28'}
-in the past with results that continue forever -
keeps on being greater than all,
and no one has the power to snatch/'seize by violence'
them from My Father's hand.

{Note: When Jesus says 'Father', He is speaking from His humanity. On the cross, however, when He said 'My God, My God why have You forsaken Me', His humanity said 'God' because He was spiritually dead - no relationship with the Father or God the Holy Spirit.}

{Note: In John 3:16 we see that Jesus was a gift from God the Father to all mankind. Here we see that WE were also a gift to Jesus From God the Father in eternity past and will always be that gift. Our relationship to Jesus and therefore the Father, never changes - once saved always saved.}

{Emphasis on Jesus' Deity}
30~~" The Father and I are one."

{Note: These two verses 29-30 are the Hypostatic Union of Christ. True humanity and true deity in One. God the Second Person had to become true man to go to the cross. Omnipresence can not be at one point. Eternal life cannot die. Therefore the Second Person agreed to follow the plan of the First Person (Father) to 'humiliate' (a great step down for Deity) Himself to the point of being subject to physical death as a man and become the perfect sacrifice for sins.}

31~~Then the Jews {religious unbelieving leaders}
picked up rocks {aorist tense - at different times}
again to 'kill by stoning' Him.

{Note: There were no rocks on Solomon's porch so they had to file outside and get rocks to do this. Probably a few left and returned, then more did the same.}

32~~Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} for them,
"I have exhibited/demonstrated to you
many good {kalos - beauty, symmetry - something on outside}
works/productions {ergon - the miracles in view here},from the source of My Father.
Because of what kind {for which one} of them {miracles}
are you going to stone Me?"

33~~ The Jews {religious leaders} 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer from the ultimate source of themselves' {apokrinomai}
for Him, "We are not going to stone you
for a good {kalos} deed {ergon} but for blasphemy,
because You, always being a man,
keep on making Yourself {claiming to be} God."

{Note: Jesus had previously tried the 'direct' approach and they rejected the Truth. So now He is moving to the logical approach. Even if they do not believe Him when He says Who He is, to kill Him under a charge of blasphemy is not supported by Jewish law.}

34-36~~ Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} for them,
"Is it not written in your law {Psalms 82:6}
- written in the past with result that it stands written forever -
'I said, you keep on being gods'?' 35~~
If he called them gods - and he did -
- unto whom the Word of God came -
 and the scripture cannot be broken . . . 36~~
say you about the One
Whom the Father set apart/sanctified {hagiazo} - in eternity past -
and 'sent on a mission with authority' {apostello}
into the world/cosmos {kosmos}
'You are blaspheming,'
because I said, 'I am the Son of God' {technical title for deity}?"

{Verses 37-38: Credit Card/Calling Card of the Shepherd}
37~~ "If I do not the works/production {ergon} of My Father
 - and I assume you do not believe I do -
keep on believing Me not {'me' - an this is an order - imperative."

{Note: Jesus is recognizing their complete freedom in being positive or negative toward Him. It is their right because God gave them free will to decide on their own.}

38~~But, in contrast, if I do them {divine good production}
- and it is true, I have done them -
even if you believe Me not
- maybe you do believe My message, maybe you do not -
believe the works/production {ergon}
  {still believe the signs of Messiah},
for the purpose that
you may 'come to know from the experience' {ginosko - gospel}
and keep on knowing
  {ginosko - phase II growing in spirituality}
that the Father in Me . . . and I in Him."

{Note: The Word of God called the judges 'gods' because they were doing the work of God. Why are they going to stone Him for calling Himself God when He also is doing the work of the Father?}

{Note: Ginosko is used with different tenses together in this sentence. The first time is to come to know at a point in time -aorist tense. It refers to Faith at the point of gospel hearing and accepting Christ as your savior. The second use is in the present tense, which means to 'keep on knowing'. This refers to after salvation, the objective of the Christian Way of life is to 'grow in the grace and KNOWLEDGE of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ'. Faith after salvation is in the Mind of Christ - bible doctrine. You must KNOW before you can APPLY. So, learn God's plan for you and then apply it to life's experiences.}
