John
Chapter
12
{Verses
1-11: Case of the Understanding Woman}
1~~
Then, six days before the Passover,
Jesus
came to Bethany
{suburb of Jerusalem up the slope of the Mt of Olives},
where
Lazarus kept on living,
whom
He {Jesus} had raised from the dead {resuscitation}.
{Note:
Matthew 26:2 and Mark 14:1-3 also cover this case. There is an
'apparent' problem in the order of events. The only real problem
though is understanding the difference between the synoptic gospels
and the gospel of John. The synoptic gospels follow the typical
Jewish writing style of 'cause and event and result'. John is in
chronological order of events.}
{Jesus'
Going Away Party}
2~~So
they prepared a party {a good meal with relaxed company} for Jesus there.
Martha
served {continues to work, work, work},
and
Lazarus sat at the table with Him.
{Note:
Lazarus just sat there. He was most likely the 'center piece' and
topic of conversation at the party. 'What is it like to be dead?'
must have been asked a thousand times!}
{Dramatic
Application of Doctrine - Mary Succeeds at the Feet of Jesus}
3~~Then
{doctrinally oriented} Mary
took
12 ounces {a Troy pound}
of
perfumed oil of nard {expensive funeral oil} . . .
very
costly . . .
and
anointed the feet of Jesus.
She
then wiped his feet dry with her hair
{I Corinthians 11:15 - a woman's hair is her glory. Also is her
symbol of submission. Her glory belongs to Jesus - she has the
capacity from doctrine to truly love Jesus.}
Now
the house was filled {pleroo}
with
the fragrance of the perfumed oil.
{Note:
Martha was the worker -work, work, work. Martha cooked food for the
living Lord. Mary was apparently the best student of doctrine in the
group (she listened at the feet of Jesus while her sister worked on).
Mary provided funeral oil for the death of the dying Lord. She
understood what Jesus had been teaching. She understood Jesus would
die soon. So, she spent an average year's wages on funeral perfume
and applied it to the feet of Jesus. Isaiah 52:7 'How beautiful are
the feet of them who preach.' - represents His ministry.}
{Note:
Pleroo more fully means to 'to fill up a deficiency'. This means the
house was probably full of the smell of the cooking of Martha. This
smell was replaced fully with the sweet odor of Jesus.}
4-5~~Then
kept on saying/criticizing
one
of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son
who
was about to betray Him) said, 5~~
"Because
of why {very strong criticism in the Greek}
wasn't
this oil {oil of nard}
sold
at a profit for three hundred denarion
{1 denarion was an average day's wage}
and
given to the poor {ptochos}?"
{Note:
We find out here that it was Judas who started the criticism of
Mary. The other gospels describe how the other disciples then
'followed in ignorance' Judas's lead. Judas was not a stupid person,
in fact in this and the next verse, we find Judas actually was a
cleaver man whose lust for money led him to steal . . . and to betray
the Lord.}
{Note:
Ptochos is the Greek word for a really poor person. It means you
have no money and no means of getting money. In the next verse, we
see this is the hypocrisy of a 'do-good' unbeliever. They cover their
actions with words that 'sound' like it is for a worthy purpose.}
6~~This
he {Judas} said
absolutely
not {ouk} because he gave a darn about the poor
{idiom - literally - 'not because it was a care to him
concerning the poor'},
but
because he kept on being a thief {kleptes}
and
'was the keeper of the groups treasury'
{idiom - literally 'had the bag'}
and
he 'removed by craftiness'/stole what was thrown into it.
{Note:
The Greeks had two words for thieves. One for those who stole by
their brains and the other for those who stole by their brawn.
Kleptes is the word for the non-violent, crafty thief and is the word
from which we get kleptomaniac.}
{Jesus'
Defense of Mary}
7-8~~Then
Jesus said,
"Leave
her alone/shut up/stop it.
for
the purpose of the day of burying
{this is Saturday and He will die on Wednesday},
she
has 'guarded what belongs to her'
{what she guarded was the doctrine resident in her soul}.8~~
For
the poor you keep on having 'always and always'
{poor will be on the earth until the 2nd Advent of Christ}
but
Me you do not have 'always and always'."
9~~
Many people of the Jews
then
'knew from experience or study' {ginosko}
that
He {Jesus} kept on being there,
and
so they came not {ouk}
because
of His sake
but,
in contrast,
That
they might discern/perceive {oida}
Lazarus
whom He had raised from the dead.
10~~And,
the chief priests {Sadducees}
resolved
to put to death Lazarus also.
{Note:
The Sadducees now also see Lazarus as an obstacle to their retaining
the 'status quo' of their power in Jerusalem so they have to
eliminate Lazarus with Jesus.}
11~~
Because on account of him {Lazarus}
many
of the Jews
began
to separate
{separated
from the yoke of religion and to the Grace of God} . . . and kept on
believing in Jesus.
{Verses
12-19: Palm Sunday Case - See Also Mark Chapter 11}
12-13~~
The next day
{the Sunday before Jesus would die on the cross on Wednesday} many
people/'the large crowd'
-
having heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem -
coming
to the feast
{the Passover and feast of the Unleavened Bread} 13~~
took
branches of palm trees
and
went forth in the act of meeting Him.
They
kept on shouting and shouting,
"SAVE
NOW {hosanna}! {beginning of Psalm 118:25}
Blessed
is the King of Israel
{paraphrase of Psalm 118:26 because of the palm branches -
King was used here}
Who
comes in the name of the Lord!"
{Note:
The other gospel writers (synaptic gospels) follow the crowd in
Bethany coming with Jesus to Jerusalem. Here John is in Jerusalem and
is following the crowd that went from Jerusalem to meet Jesus coming.
This is a 'meanwhile back at the ranch' verse.}
{Note:
The palm tree branches were a prophesized sign of Messiahship. It
represented Jesus Christ returning triumphantly in the 2nd Advent.
They were mistakenly trying to put the crown before the cross. They
wanted Jesus to free them from the rule of Rome.}
14-15~~And,
Jesus
having
found a young donkey/ass
sat
on it, just as it was written in the past
with
results that continue forever {Zechariah 9:9}, 15~~
"Stop
being afraid, daughters of Zion {people of Jerusalem}!
Behold,
your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt!"
16~~(His
{Jesus'} disciples did not understand
from
study or observation {ginosko}
these
things when they first happened,
but
when Jesus was glorified
{ascension and seated at the right hand of the Father},
then
they remembered these things were written in the past
with
results that continue forever about Him
and
that they themselves had done these things unto Him.)
17-18~~So
the people who had been with Him {Jesus}
when
He called Lazarus out of the tomb
and
raised him from the dead were continuing
to
witness/testify about it. 18~~
For
this cause,
the
people also met Him,
because
they had heard that Jesus
had
performed this miraculous sign.
{Note:
The Jews from Jerusalem had returned to Jerusalem and related the
story. That is why this crowd was now coming from Jerusalem to 'see
evidence of this amazing event'.}
19~~Therefore
the Pharisees
said
among themselves at that point in time,
"Do
you contemplate mentally {theoreo}
that
we are making no headway in destroying Him?
{idiom - literally 'that we prevail nothing?}
Behold,
the world/kosmos has run off after Him!
{but for the wrong reason! They want Him to remove
the yoke of Rome. They don't accept Him as savior.}"
{Verses
20-36: Case of the Seeking Greeks}
20~~And,
there kept on being
some
Greeks {Gentile by race, Hellenistic by culture}
among
those having gone up
to
worship
{proskuneo - literally 'to kiss face to face - came to mean worship}
at the feast.
{Note:
These Greeks are not saved, but were positive at the point of God
consciousness and are seeking the True 'good news'/gospel of Christ.
At this point though they are just curious emotionally about a man
who brought another back to life.}
21~~
The same {curious Greeks}
came
face to face with Philip,
who
was from Bethsaida in Galilee,
and
requested {idiom -literally 'desired of him (to answer them)'},
"Sir/Lord
{kurios},
we
'desire from our emotions {thelo}
to
see {the whole picture about} Jesus."
22~~Philip
came and told Andrew,
and,
again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus
{Andrew first indicates he took charge of the situation}.
{Note:
Now Philip's orders in Matthew 10:5 was to GO and evangelize the
scattered sheep of the House of Israel. Now he has coming to him -
Gentiles! He does not know what to do so he leans on a friend - not
spiritually self-sustaining yet. Now Andrew also was confused but at
least he had a right action - take it to Jesus!}
{Jesus
Changes the Standing Order of the Day}
23~~Jesus
'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai},
"The
hour/time {for the cross} has come
-
in the past with the result that it is here -
for
the purpose that
the
Son of Man may be glorified
{death, resurrection, ascension, and session -
seated on His throne in heaven}.
{Note:
The word answered is 'apokrinomai'. It is a compound
verb
. . . a preposition from the ultimate source . . . giving a
discerning answer based on knowledge. Krino means: 'to judge'.
Krinomai means: 'to be discerning in an answer'. Thus, the full
meaning of 'apokrinomai' is: "to give a discerning answer from
the ultimate source of ones self."}
{Jesus
to the Gentiles
(NOT to Jews so Not a Jewish Frame of Reference)}
{Principal
of Born-Again -
Phase I Salvation in Gentile Frame of Reference}
24~~"Point
of doctrine/I tell you the solemn truth,
unless
a seed of wheat falls into the ground {incarnation of Christ}
and
dies {apothnesko - die from the ultimate source of your self -
strongest word for dead}
-
maybe it will, maybe it will not -
it
remains by itself 'non-multiplied'/alone.
But
if it dies
-
maybe it will, maybe it will not -
it
produces much grain."
{Jesus
Now Relates Greek Philosophy to Phase II Believer in Time}
25~~
"The one who keeps on having
a
habitual 'rapport love' {phileo} his soul {psuche}
{refers to the 'seeking Greeks' who accept Christ and will be
saved, this refers to Phase II - after salvation in time -
will they stay with self-gratification,which is the basic
concept for Hedonism as a Greek Philosophy, what is your
emphasis? Details of life after salvation or doctrine?}
divorces
{apollueio} it;
and
the one who disregards {miseo} his soul {psuche}
{de-emphasis on the details of life. And, the principal of 'life is
too short' - don't take yourself too seriously - keep an RMA
- don't take compliments too seriously . . . and criticisms don't
affect you greatly}
in
this world/kosmos
'guards
what belongs to someone else' {phulasso}
it
{your soul - Jesus Christ purchased your soul with His work on
the cross}
up
to life {zoe} everlasting {up to Phase III - eternity future}. "
{Note:
The background of the Greeks made them usually a lascivious crowd.
Jesus was telling them that background would hinder their spiritual
growth. RBT says the Greek word apollueio is used here meaning 'to
divorce from their past life style.' They need to divorce themselves
from their past experiences. SideNote: Apollumi is the normal word
for destroy or perish. Would still refer to put an end to your
lascivious lifestyle.}
