John
Chapter
2
{Note:
RBT says weddings of virgins occurred on Wednesdays. So this is
probably a Wednesday. RBT says actually Mary was the
"grand-dame" of the wedding. It was her job to work behind
the scenes at the wedding celebration. She was the one in charge/in
authority making sure everything was taken care of. At the wedding
ceremony there were two official people in positions of authority:
2~~Now
both Jesus
{Jesus
and the disciples Arrive and no wine to drink as is customary} {Note: The setting here is Jesus and His disciples arrive. It was custom to have a glass of wine to toast the bride and groom. They asked for wine but there was none. This is a potentially embarrassing situation for the bride and groom.}
4~~Jesus
said, "GUNE! / WOMAN!" {Note: Speaking from His Deity, Jesus says GUNE! Jesus is disciplining Mary by not calling here 'mother' or 'noble woman'. Mary is out of line, but Mary is also sensitive to the fact that her human son was also her God and Savior! Mary starts out being stimulated from the human viewpoint - "they are out of wine", so lets go home!" but after the rebuke from Jesus, she SWITCHED from HUMAN VIEWPOINT, to the faith-rest principle and DIVINE VIEWPOINT. Now she gets it!}
5~~His
mother {Mary} said to the servants,
6~~Now
there were set there six water-pots of stone,
7~~Jesus
said to them,
8~~And
He said to them,
9~~When
the master of the feast had tasted the water
10~~And
he said to him,
11~~This
beginning of the signs/miracles {first of His Messianic miracles} Note: There were six empty water pots made of stone - hard headed! There were six empty disciples with Jesus also hard headed. They HAD believed meaning Jesus is filling up the water pots with doctrine/divine viewpoint!}
{Verses
12-17: The Attack of Religion - in Mass Numbers}
13~~Now
the Jew's Passover was at hand, {Note: This is a reference to the "Lord's Passover" from Ex. 12:11 that the religious Jews converted into religion, which originally spoke of the Lord Jesus Christ as the Passover Lamb, who takes away the sins of the world. The religious Jews turned it into a religious ceremony in the Temple, calling it "The Passover of the Jews", rather than the "Lord's Passover". SideNote: John is placing this event in the text in a logical position. He is addressing Jesus' opinion on religion. Matthew recorded the event, but in a chronological position as it occurred.}
{Corruption
in the Temple} {Note: The Temple was where Christology - the person and work of Jesus Christ was to be taught. It was now being distorted into a system of religious activity. The moneychangers were selling animal sacrifices at exorbitant prices, making a huge profit. Anywhere else, this would of been a legitimate form of business, but in the Temple, it was distorting the true issue of the spiritual life . . . the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. This was tantamount to rejection of Christ in the Temple. The 'world' must be removed from the Temple before the Temple can reach the 'world' for Jesus Christ.}
15~~When
He {Jesus} had made a whip of cords, {Note: See also Matthew 21:12. Jesus used violence against religion. He DID NOT "turn the other cheek" when dealing with the attack of religion against the Truth of the Word. He dealt a swift blow to false doctrine.}
16~~And
He {Jesus} said to those who sold doves, {Note: Here Jesus asked them to leave. SideNote: In the scriptures a dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. So, here He asked them to leave and they did.}
17~~Then
His disciples remembered that it was written {Psalms 16:9}, "The
zeal that belongs to My house
{Verses
18-22: Jesus is Challenged by Religion} {Note: This is a challenge by the religious Jews -- "What is your authority to do these things -throw out the money changers etc.?"}
19~~Jesus
answered and said to them, {Note: RBT says Jesus by using THIS was speaking of His own Body and was probably pointing to His body as He said this. Below in verse 21, we now know He was referring to His being resurrected in three days - NOT the temple building where they were.}
20~~Then
the Jews said, {Note: This refers to the period of time it took Herod to re-designing the temple.}
{So
the Sign He gave them was the Sign of the Resurrection}
22~~Therefore,
when He had risen from the dead, {Note: Jesus had taught the disciples doctrine for 3 years, but they learned very little. It was not until after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, that they became serious about bible doctrine.}
23~~Now
when He {Jesus} was in Jerusalem at the Passover,
24-25~~But
Jesus did not commit/entrust Himself to them, {Note: The word "commit" means to entrust. Jesus knew men's hearts. They wanted to make Him King. He knew they did not have the ability to make Him King.} ************************************************** Joshua_Sozo and Syndein are the Trademarks of Syndein a California DBA of Kenneth Sidley & Associates, Inc., a California Corporation.
