John

Chapter 3 {continued}
{Religious Attack}
26~~And they {religious leaders - clergy}
came to John and said to him,
"Rabbi {they are sarcastically calling John 'Rabbi'
  knowing he does not have a theological degree} . . .
He Who was with you {won't mention His Name}
beyond the Jordan . . .
to Whom you have communicated/testified . . .
BEHOLD . . . the Same {Jesus} is baptizing,
and all are coming to Him! {very successful - body count wise}"

{Note: They are trying to instigate antagonism between John and Jesus.}

27~~John 'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself' {apokrinomai}
and said,
"A man does not have the ability to receive anything
unless it has been given to him from heaven."

{Note: The word answered is 'apokrinomai'. It is a compound
verb . . . a preposition from the ultimate source . . . giving a discerning answer based on knowledge. Krino means: 'to judge'. Krinomai means: 'to be discerning in an answer'. Thus, the full meaning of 'apokrinomai' is: "to give a discerning answer from the ultimate source of ones self."}

28~~You yourselves heard me communicate . . .
that I said,
"I am not the Christ,
but I have been sent before Him."

29~~"He Who keeps on having the Bride {Church Age believers} . . . keeps on being the Groom {Jesus Christ - the groom owns the bride}. But the friend of the groom -
who stands {doing your job as unto the Lord - in this case - John} and listens to Him {concentration under a relaxed attitude} -
rejoices with great joy,
because of the groom's voice {teaching}.
Therefore this joy of mine
is fulfilled in the past with the result
that it is completed {end of John's ministry/job as unto the Lord}."

{Note: This is why John the Baptizer is the greatest born of Women - Matthew 11:11 and Luke 7:28.}

30~~"He {Jesus Christ} must keep on growing and growing,
but I {John the Herald/Baptizer}
must keep on declining in importance."

{Note: John is anticipating the Church Age transition. John is a minister of the Jewish age and he knows it is coming to a close. The Church Age increases the ministry of Jesus Christ. John is oriented to the Plan of God. The declining of John's ministry in importance is part of the Plan of God. He is not frustrated or upset about it in the least. He is happy and rejoicing in the Groom, Jesus Christ, in keeping with the dispensational change of the Plan of God.}

{Note: Principle: the believers mental attitude should be the same in all kinds of weather - relaxed, held in perfect peace, occupied with the person of Christ, at all times.}

{Verses 31-35: Message of John the Baptist}
31~~"He {Jesus}
Who comes from above
'keeps on being above all'/'is above all' . . .
and he {himself - John the Baptizer}
who is of the earth . . .
and/even speaks from the earth.
He {Jesus}
Who comes from heaven
is above all."

32~~"And what He {Jesus}
has observed - by being present in eternity past -
with the result that He provides for IT TODAY -
and also what He heard . . .
in accordance with that {what He observed}
He keeps on communicating
and/yet no one of you {religious crowd/types}
receives His communication."

33~~"He who has received His communication
has set his seal {idiom - we would say 'signed on the dotted line'}
that the God is True {God has made full provision in time}."

{Note: People who accept Christ as their Savior have 'signed' that God is true - and that is permanent salvation. You can not renege on the deal even if you try!}

34~~"For He Whom the God {God the Father}
has sent to take charge {Jesus Christ}
keeps on speaking the words of God {doctrine} . . .
for the God gives not the Spirit {Holy Spirit}
'by measure'/'in a finite amount'."

35~~"The Father keeps on loving the Son {Jesus}
and has given in the past . . .
with the result He keeps on giving all things
into His hand
  {Jesus Christ in Hypostatic Union rules forever}."

{Salvation and The Alternative}
36~~ "He who believes {pisteuo} on the Son
keeps on having and holding {echo} everlasting life;
and he who does not believe/'obey the command' {apeitheo}
{to believe in} the Son,
shall not see life {eternal life resides in Jesus},
but the wrath of God abides on him."

{Note: Pisteuo means to believe. It is in the dramatic present tense. It means that this is a dramatic event in one's life.}

{Note: Echo means to have and to hold. It is in the present active indicative tense which means to keep on having and holding. At the point of salvation, you receive eternal life and you keep on having it forever and ever.}

{Note: Apeitheo is the Greek word from which we get 'apathy'. It means to not comply or to not obey a command . . . which in this case is the command to 'believe in' . . . so in full to 'believe in the Son'.}
