John

Chapter 4 (Continued)
{30~~Then they went out of the city
  {all charging out at the same time}
and they kept on coming
  {moved at different speeds - so a mass of white robes coming down} - to their advantage - to Him {Jesus}.

31~~In the mean while,
His disciples kept on urging/begging/saying,
"Master . . . eat."

{Note: They went for food, yet are concerned because He will not eat what they brought.}

32~~But He said to them,
"I have food to eat {refers to 'something to do'}
of which you do not know."

{Note: The disciples are eating. Jesus is not eating. The disciples are looking down at the food that they are eating. Jesus is looking up the hill . . . looking out at all the people coming down the hill. They came by the thousands . . . one mass of white. All these people with +V and who would soon be born again, but Jesus also saw something else. He saw what He was going to have to do for their salvation . . . their sins poured out on Him on the cross! Throughout the Bible, whenever Jesus thought about the cross, He stopped eating. He was no longer hungry. He sees all these people coming for whom He is going to have to die as their substitute on the cross . . . a tremendous mass of sin - all its horror, pain and suffering.

Because the disciples lack doctrine, they can not see what Jesus sees and appreciate the situation, the mass of people before them the same way Jesus does. Jesus first looks at the mass of people on the hill and then looks up to the sky and sees God the Father. He sees all the people on the hill coming to Him in white robes, who in the future will be in white resurrection bodies. For those who learn more and more doctrine, everything becomes a point of doctrine in their lives. Living in the light of eternity.}

33~~Therefore the disciples mumbled/said
to one another,
"Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?"

{Note: They brought Him food! But . . . did He get food while they were gone? What is up? They are still new to doctrine and are ignorant yet of pertinent doctrine.}

{Jesus sees They are still not Getting the Doctrine so He Clarifies}
34~~Jesus said to them,
"My food keeps on being
to do the will of Him {God the Father}
Who sent Me,
and to finish His work {the Father Designed the Plan}."

35~~"Do you not say {and don't say it anymore},
'There are still four months and then comes the harvest?'
Behold, I say to you,
lift up your eyes
  {to the people in white robes coming down the mountain}
and look at the fields,
for they are already white for harvest!"

{Note: This is an agricultural society. While the disciples were eating, they were most likely discussing this year's crop. Jesus hears them discussing this year's harvest being maybe 4 months away - and uses this in His analogy. He tells them to look up at the white robes coming down the mountain - THAT was His harvest and it was ready NOW!}

36~~"And he who reaps {the disciples}
receives wages {rewards} . . .
and gathers fruit for eternal life . . .
that both the one sowing {in this case, the woman witnessed}
and the one reaping
  {this case, the disciples will evangelize and teach}
may rejoice together."

{Note: Christianity is a team effort. Here one sows and a different one reaps - and at the end they rejoice together. This is how it will be in eternity future!}

37~~"For in this the saying is true . . .
'One sows and one reaps' "

38~~"I sent you to reap
  {they will do the explaining to the crowds and bring many to
  salvation}
that for which you have not labored
  {they went to the town for food and 'witnessed to no one'}.
Others have labored
  {the woman witnessed and brought many to hear},
and you have entered into their labors
  {they will receive rewards that are only available because of HER work first}."

{Note: The disciples did not bring the people to Jesus, the woman did, but they all have a place on the team . . . this is grace.}

39~~And many of the Samaritans of the city
believed in Him {at a point in time - aorist tense again}
because of the saying of the woman who testified,
"He told me all that I ever did."

40~~So when the Samaritans
had come face to face to Him,
they kept on urging/begging Him to stay with them.
And He stayed there two days.

41~~And many more believed because of His Word.

42~~Then they kept on saying to the woman,
"Now we believe,
not because of what you said
for we ourselves have heard Him
and we know that this is indeed the Christ,
the Savior of the world."

{Onward to Galilee}
43~~Now after the two days
He departed from there
and went to Galilee.

{Note: Jesus had a genuine reception in Samaria, but He was rejected in his own hometown of Nazareth. Ties in with Luke 4: 16 and following.}

44~~For Jesus Himself
testified that a prophet
has no honor in His own country {Luke 4:24}.

{Note: This is because those who grew up with Him had negative volition. Miracles are to gather the attention of positive unbelievers not to change the mind of those who are negative. Rest of the chapter explains what Jesus meant by this verse 44.}

{Verses 45-54: Explanation of Verse 44}
{Jesus' Superficial Reception - They Want a 'Show'}
45~~So when He came to Galilee,
the Galileans received Him,
having seen all the things
He did in Jerusalem at the feast.
For they also had gone to the feast.

{Note: These people were just here because they wanted to see a miracle, not because of positive volition toward the word or toward Christ. They were impressed with His miracles but not His Person.}

{Healing the Royal Official's Son}
46~~So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee
where He had made the water wine.
And there was a certain nobleman {an unbeliever}
whose son was sick {dying} at Capernaum.

47~~When he heard that Jesus
had come out of Judea into Galilee
he went face to face with Him
and kept on begging/imploring Him
to come down and heal his son . . .
for he was at the point of death.

48~~Then Jesus said to him {a rebuke},
"If - maybe you will see, maybe you will not see -
unless you people see signs and wonders
you will by no means believe."

{Note: Jesus is saying He will not perform a miracle unless they do believe FIRST -- the people want to see a miracle, but Jesus only performed miracles where positive volition and His Messiahship was accepted.}

49~~The nobleman said to Him,
"Lord {probably saved at this point},
come down now {an imperative - a command}
before my child dies!"

{Note: Now a request of a born-again man.}

50~~Jesus kept saying face to face with him,
"Go your way {an order and a challenge to use faith-rest technique}
your son lives."
So the man believed the word -at that point in time {aorist tense}
that Jesus spoke to him,
and he kept on doing whatever he had to do - to his benefit.

{Note: His son was only 4 hours away by walk. Yet in the next few verses we see the man did not get back until the next day! He HAD relied in the Lord that his son was well and stayed over night and did whatever - no problem! The Lord provided and he knew it.}

51~~And as he was now approaching,
his servants rushed to him
and told him, saying, "Your son lives!"

{Note: Apparently he was a great man and his servants loved him and were happy for him!}

52~~Then he inquired of them
the hour when he got better.
And they said to him,
"Yesterday at the seventh hour {1PM}
the fever left him."

53~~So the father knew
that it was at the same hour
in which Jesus said to him,
"Your son lives."
And he himself believed . . .
and his whole household.

{Note: Similarly stated in Acts. This means that the nobleman believed first and was saved. He related his experience to the rest of his household and they followed his lead and believed also - resulting in salvation for them also. His opinion was key to everyone in the house.}

54~~This is again the second sign Jesus did
when He came out of Judea into Galilee.

{Note: Jesus went to Samaria, then Galilee and then back to Judea.}
