John

Chapter 7 (Continued)
{Verses 37-39: The Key to the Church Age - Jesus Teaching about the Holy Spirit}
{People Positive at God Consciousness WILL be Positive at Gospel Hearing}
37-38~~On the last day
  {of the feast 8th day of the Feast of the Tabernacle},
the greatest day {Leviticus 23:36 very important Sabbath day}, Jesus stood with the results that would last forever {histemi}
and He began to shout {krazo} . . .
and kept on communicating {lego}
  {3 separate tenses here - very dramatic},
"If anyone thirsts {dipsao}
  {positive volition at point of God consciousness}
- maybe they do, maybe they do not -
  {recognizing human volition},
let him come {erchomai}
  {positive at the point of gospel hearing}
face to face with Me
  {indicates a relationship},
and 38~~ let the one who believes {pisteuo}
in Me drink
  {the mechanics - drinking is a non-meritorious act - as is Faith}. Just as the scripture says
  {prophetical of New Testament Scripture Rev. 22:17 and ties to Isaiah 55:1},
'Out of His inner most being
  {koilia - idiom literally from His cavity/stomach/belly}
shall flow rivers of always existing/living water.' "

{Note: On the first seven days of the Feast of the Tabernacles, a great show was put on - 'the Golden Pitcher March'. The Priests would carry a golden pitcher to the fountain of 'Si-loom' (sp) surrounded by singers, musical instruments, on and on, and would march through the middle of Jerusalem. They would then dip the golden pitcher into the fountain and draw water. Then the whole procession would dance back to the Temple where they would sing Isaiah 12:3 'with joy shall you draw water from the well of salvation'. On the 8th day, they did not get the water so Jesus is now telling them that He is the water they should want to drink.}

{Note: This is a very dramatic event in the Greek syntax. Changing the tense of the verbs grabs your attention. First, histemi means to stand. It is in the perfect active indicative tense meaning that Jesus did this and the results would last forever. There were many positive types in the crowd just waiting for the gospel message.}

{Note: Next comes krazo in the aorist active indicative. Jesus shouted the entire message. The Temple was large and filled with people. Jesus was an excellent orator. His voice carried throughout the Temple . . . per RBT even to the room where the Sanhedrin was plotting to kill Him They also heard the message.}

{Note: The third verb with a tense change is lego - linear action sart - dramatic present active participle. It means to keep on communicating.}

{Note: This is a very important verse in the Greek - sorry, but the syntax is extremely important! Dipsao means to thirst. It is in the present active subjunctive. The subjunctive recognizes they may or may not be thirsty. NEXT, and this is really important, follows erchomai in the imperative mood! An imperative following a subjunctive indicates that though human will permits the fact that some may be positive at the point of God consciousness, but RBT says the imperative here indicates that those who ARE positive at the point of God consciousness WILL ALWAYS be positive at the point of gospel hearing.}

{Note: Pisteuo here is in the present active participle form. It means to have faith or believe. There is no merit in believing. The merit goes to the object of belief - Jesus Christ.}

{'Water' Here Said to Represent God the Holy Spirit}
39~~(Now this, spoke/confirmed He
concerning the {Holy} Spirit,
Whom those who believe {pisteuo} on Him
are about to receive {after His ascension};
for the Holy Spirit was not yet {given},
because Jesus {His humanity} was not yet glorified
  {seated at the right hand of the Father Psalm 110:1}.)

{Note: Pisteuo is a dramatic present here. It is a dramatic event to receive eternal salvation. When Jesus spoke, He was 6 months before the cross and then after resurrection and ascension plus 10 days, the Holy Spirit would be received by all believers in the Church Age. Sometimes pisteuo is in the aorist tense because it is a cumulative aorist. Every point in time that some person in the Church Age believes and receives salvation, is gathered into one point of time, divorced from time and perpetuated forever.}

{Verses 40-52: Results of Our Lord's Message}
{Verse 40-42: Audience Response and Reaction}
40~~Having heard the Word {Jesus Preach the Gospel},
some of the {positive} crowd kept on saying,
"This really keeps on being the Prophet {promised by Moses}!"

{Note: In the Old Testament, only Moses had both the gift of Prophet and the office of Prophet. So, he was unique. He told of another unique 'the Prophet' to come - prophesizing on Jesus Christ. These were positive based on understanding of the Old Testament.}

{Positive Based on Accepting the Message Itself.}
41~~Others {also positive} said,
"This keeps on being the Christ!"
But still others {negative} kept on saying,
"No, for the Christ doesn't come from Galilee, does He?

42~~"Don't the scriptures say
that the Christ 'comes from the seed'/'is a descendant of' David
and comes from Bethlehem,
the village where David kept on being?"

{Note: Religion always distorts the scripture to try and make it fit their preconceived ideas. They are mistakenly saying this does not match Jesus.}

43~~So there became a division {violent factions}
in the crowd because of Jesus.

{Note: Jesus was the most controversial man of His day and most likely ever. 'Controversy' does not imply 'bad' as most think. It just means that He was a topic of conversation where the debaters had differing and strong opinions.}

44~~Some of them were wanting to violently seize Him,
but no one of them laid a hand on Him.

{Note: We see from the next verse, that 'some' here refers to the Temple guards/police that the Sanhedrin Counsel sent to capture Jesus. They listened to His message, and it was His message that stopped them - they were positive.}

45~~Then the officers {temple police}
returned to the chief priests and Pharisees,
who {Sanhedrin} said to them {police},
"Why didn't you all bring Him back with you?"

46~~The officers received an answer from their inner resources, discerned and said {apokrinomai}, "Not ever, not at any time,
has anyone ever spoke/'taught categorically' {laleo}
like this Man!"

{Note: The temple police have spent all their careers listening to the chief priests and Pharisees 'talking' in the temple. They are really slapping the Sanhedrin members across their faces when they say this!}

{Note: Laleo means to speak/teach in categories. Lego means to speak/teach exegetically.}

47-48~~Then the Pharisees received an answer
from their inner resources, discerned and said {apokrinomai},
"Do you also keep on being deceived? 48~~
Have any of the rulers of the Pharisees
believed on Him?" 49~~
But these people/mob who do not know the law are accursed!"

{Note: The Sanhedrin start with the debater's technique. You are stupid. The mob learn from us and without us know nothing! WE are your spiritual leaders. Therefore, you should follow us NOT the masses who, in this case are ignorant rabble and will go to hell for following Jesus!}

50-51~~Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus by night {John 3:1}
and who was one of them
  {one of the rulers of the Sanhedrin Counsel},
said unto them {Sanhedrin}, 51~~
"Does our law judge/condemn a man
unless it first hears from Him
and learns what He is doing?"

{Note: Nicodemus, who RBT says is a believer at this point, answers their desire to kill Jesus with a point of law! They have judged Jesus without a fair trial! The law was very good. It was the application of the law by these religious jealous men that was evil.}

52~~They {Sanhedrin} received an answer from their inner resources, discerned and said {apokrinomai},
"Are you also from Galilee {name calling - they knew he was not!}? Investigate carefully and you will see
that no prophet comes from Galilee!"

{Note: Nicodemus stayed objective with the law. The Sanhedrin went subjective and used 'name calling' as their response. All the Sanhedrin were 'pure Jews' from the Southern Kingdom and Galilee was 'up north' and a mixture of many peoples and considered scum by the ethically biased Southerners.}

53~~And each one departed to his own house.

{Note: The Sanhedrin Counsel broke up without arresting Jesus or punishing Nicodemus or the temple police. They are fuming though and readying their next plot to destroy Jesus (again this is from their mental attitude sins of jealousy, bitterness, envy, and mental murder - they will eventually convert these sins to the overt sin of the murder of Jesus.}
