John

Chapter 8 (Added Verses to Original)
{Note: Verses 8:1-11 do NOT appear in the oldest and most reliable original manuscripts. In the Greek order, verse 12 begins with 'palin' which is an adverb of continuation. RBT says it clearly tells us that verse 12 is connected with Chapter 7:53. Therefore, at the very least, verses 1-11 would be a parenthesis. However, the real clue is that there are inconsistencies in these 11 verses making it not possible that they are from God the Holy Spirit through John. Finally, the majority of the passage DOES line up with grace. RBT says that the story is a true story, but who ever add to the original showed their trends toward asceticism and legalism.

Summary on Verses 1-11:

1. It is a true story.

2. It is NOT part of the canon of scriptures.

3. Codex Oliff (sp), Codex A, Codex B, Codex L, Codex W plus 5000 papyri do NOT have this story.

4. Codex Be-zii (sp) does have this story. This is an old manuscript - circa 550 A. D. This manuscript resides today at Cambridge.

5. Codex Oliff (sp) is two hundred years older - circa 340 A.D. Tishindorf (sp) in Germany was a genius and was instrumental in recovering this manuscript. RBT says Codex Oliff is one of the best in telling us what was in the original.

6. Codex A (Alex-in-dree-ness (sp)) - circa 450 A.D. did not have the verses.

7. Codex B is locked away in the Vatican and Tishindorf was permitted in 1866 to view it 2 hours a day for a summer with NO paper or pen. A librarian turned the pages for him - he was not permitted to touch it. But, as a genius, he MEMORIZED it and copied it down that winter. In 1889, the Vatican allowed it to be photographed and distributed to the world.

8. Codex C and D are in France in the National Library and they do not have these verses.

9. The papyri ox-or-in-this (sp), also did not have this story.}

{8:1~~Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Note: This could be true. When His life was in danger, He did leave the city and go up to the Mount of Olives.}

{8:2~~ And early in the morning
He came to the temple courts again.
All the people came face to face with Him,
and He sat down and began to teach them.

Note: Part of this rings true. When Jesus came to the temple, the people did want to come and listen to Him. But it does NOT make sense that He would sit down to teach. As we saw in Chapter 7, Jesus stood UP to teach to a large audience. His voice would then carry to all parts of the temple.}

{8:3~~The scribes and the Pharisees
brought a woman
who had been seized in the sex act of adultery.
They made her stand in front of them.

Note: Now RBT says this story is true though he does not say why he knows this. Apparently this does sound like a trap the religious leaders would try to set for Jesus. If He says RELEASE HER, then they can say He is against their Mosaic Law. If He says STONE HER, then they can say He is inconsistent with His own policy of grace.}

{8:4~~And {they} say to Him {Jesus},
"Master/Rabbi {don't recognize Him as Lord},
this woman was 'seized according to their standards' {katalambano}
in the very physical sex act of adultery."

Note: Lambano is the verse meaning to seize. Kata indicates 'according to a norm or standard'. So using katalambano here means she was seized according to their norms and standards.}

{8:5~~"Now Moses in the law {Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy 22:22} commanded us that such {adulterous women}
should be stoned {to death}.
But, what do You {Jesus} say?"}

{8:6~~(Now they kept on saying this
and they persisted in testing Him {to prove evil in Him}
that they might have a basis for accusing Him.)
Jesus bent down
and wrote on the ground with His finger
{'as if He had not heard them' - was added to the addition in KJV
by that translator!}.

Note: So as Jesus was sitting down and teaching He bent down. Ok? And, RBT says the style of writing in the Greek is very different from John's Greek style. Jesus is in the temple so if this did happen, He is writing on marble floors with His finger. This is a picture of Him writing the Ten Commandments on stone for Moses many years earlier.}

{8:7~~When they kept on persisting in asking Him,
He 'raised His eyes'/'stood up straight' and replied,
"Whoever among you is without sin
may be the first to throw a stone at her."

Note: On the surface, this looks like grace and the grace attitude. But subtly it is not. The leaders of the Nation have to stand in judgment of the citizens in order for the civilized nation to survive. So, Jesus would not have told a governing body to only condemn her to death, if they were without sin! Sounds good, but this also sounds like human viewpoint.}

{8:8~~Then He bent over again and wrote on the ground.}

{8:9~~Now when they heard this,
being convicted by their conscience,
they began to drift away one at a time,
starting with the leaders,
until Jesus was left alone {kataleipo}
with the woman standing in the midst
{with the result that she continued standing before Him}.

Note: This verse implies that the leaders came to their convictions first which of course would not be logical. People come to conclusions at differing times. Here Kataleipo was used again indicating He was left alone according to norms or standards.}

{8:10~~When Jesus 'lifted up His eyes'/'straightened up'
and saw no one but the woman,
He said to her,
"Woman, where are your accusers?
Did no one condemn/judge you
according to their norms and standards {katakrino}?"

Note: Krino is the normal word for judging or condemning. Kata again means according to the norms and standards in your soul.}

{8:11~~She replied, "No one, Lord {recognizing His deity}."
And Jesus said,
"I do not condemn/judge you either
according to my norms and standards {katakrino}.
Go, and stop sinning any more."

Note: This is the biggest 'problem verse'. First of all, Jesus could have said, 'I do not krino you also'. But for Him to say I do not krino you according to my norms and standards would just not be true. As God, His norms and standards are perfect and adultery does violate this standard and as God, He is consistent and ALWAYS judges sin. Now He could have said, I will take your katakrino unto Myself and be judged for you and been accurate.

Note: Next, the problem is we know in I John 1:8 and 10 that we are all sinners and will sin until the day we die. For Jesus to tell her to go sin no more could not be accurate unless she was dieing right then and there. He could have told her to use rebound when she sinned or grow to spiritual maturity to reduce your sinning, but not 'sin no more'. }
