Psalms
Chapter
80
{National
Restoration Psalm from the 5th Cycle of Discipline}
1a~~{Title}
To the 'Chief Musician'/Choir Director' . . .
the
'testimony of the lilies' {Shuwshan `Eduwth}.
{lilies are a very common flower all over Palestine - means
that we know God is faithful and responds to Grace based
on who and What HE is, not who and what we are - Jews will again
return to Palestine - the land of the lilies - we will be back!}
1b~~A
Psalm {mizmowr} of Asaph.
{Note:
Asaph was a prophet, musician and poet - see I Chronicles 6:39. He
wrote the Psalms 50 and 73- 83 which is actually poetry.}
{Note:
RBT says that the 'superscriptions' at the beginning of psalms was
taught by the theologian 'Vir-tyl' (sp) to be 'subscriptions psalm.
But RBT thinks they might more accurately be called 'transitional-scripts'
since they tie one related psalm to the previous one. This title
links psalm 79 to psalm 80.}
1c~~Be
caused to listen and answer/obey
{'azan - Hiphil imperative mood - an order to God ONLY should be
done by a mature believer on strong doctrinal grounds}
O
Shepherd of Israel.
{title for the manifest member of the Godhead - Jesus Christ}
You
Who leads Joseph
{referring to the Northern Kingdom lead by Manasseh -
when addressed to believers only - 'Joseph' was used - when all the
Northern Kingdom is being addressed 'Ephraim' is used}
like
a flock.
{Daniel would have prayed the gist of this prayer 3 times a day
when the Northern Kingdom was whipped out}
You
Who dwells between the cherubim . . .
{Cherubim are a class of angels with 4 wings -
2 are portrayed in the Holy of Holies over the Mercy Seat - when
God was present, Jesus Christ would sit between the 2 Cherubim}
shine
forth.
2~~Before
Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh . . .
{these three tribes were bivouacked together on the west side
of the Holy of Holies nearest to the Mercy Seat.}
'stir
up Your strength'/'really get tough'
{`uwr - Polel imperative - this is an order - all three represents
strength and stability in a society - Ephraim is the largest tribe -
numbers strength; Benjamin were the toughest fighters- military
strength; Manasseh represents 'the rest' - they are famous for
'being weak' (principle of grace) - 3 ingredients of a stabilized
society},
and
come and deliver us.
{petition for the 2nd Advent of Christ}
{Note:
Benjamin means 'son of my right hand'. Jesus Christ again is the son
of God's right hand.}
{The
1st Refrain of the Song - Format for National Rebound Prayer}
3~~Cause
us to be restored again, O 'Elohiym/Godhead,
and
cause Your face to shine . . .
{idiom for restoration of economic prosperity in a national entity}
that
we might receive deliverance.
{Note:
Prayer for restoration based on personal rebound. See also I Kings
8:33-36; 8:46-49. How often should it be prayed? Three times a day
per Psalms 55:17}
{Reference
to the 5th Cycle of Discipline Continues}
4~~O
Jehovah/God . . .
'Elohiym/Godhead
of the armies/hosts,
how
long will You be angry . . .
against
the prayer of Your people?
{Note:
In Daniel 6:10 we see that Daniel prayed this prayer even though he
knew it was against the King's command. He risked death to continue
to pray to God for National deliverance. Daniel must have prayed this
prayer three times a day for 70 straight years.}
{Verses
5-8: Reason for the Prayer - God is Angry they have Rejected His Word}
5~~You
feed them with the bread of tears . . .
and
give them tears to drink in great measure.
6~~You
make us a strife unto our neighbors . . .
and
our enemies laugh among themselves.
{Note:
Verses 5 and 6 describe the things that happen to people out under
the 5th cycle of discipline.}
{The
Refrain of the Song}
7~~
Cause us to be restored again, O 'Elohiym/Godhead,
and
cause Your face to shine . . .
{idiom for restoration of economic prosperity in a national entity}
that
we might receive deliverance.
{Break
in Prayer to Remind Us of God and His Faithfulness}
8a~~You
have brought a vine out of Egypt.
{Note:
From Isaiah 5:1-7 and other places. The vine is the children of
Israel in the sense of their responsibilities in Old Testament Times.
The vine produces the grape and the grape produces divine good. So it
is the picture of God working through His client nation.}
8b~~You
have cast out the heathen, and planted it.
{Note:
The command was to kill the Canaanites just as you would a mad dog
or their degeneracy would destroy all mankind - see Leviticus 18. So
God cast out the heathen and placed the people of Israel in the
promised land.}
{Verses
9-19: Restoration Prayer Resumes}
9~~You
prepared room before it,
{'room' has to do with the promised land and 'it' has to do with the
vine}
and
did cause it to take deep roots,
and
it filled the land.
10~~The
hills were covered with the shadow of it,
{shadow has to do with large growth and therefore prosperity}
and
the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
{establishment of a tree represents the stability factor in the
prosperity of the nation}
11~~She
{the vine/Israel}
sent
out her boughs unto the sea {Mediterranean Sea},
and
her branches unto the river {Jordan River}.
{Note:
The Jews controlled everything between the sea and the river.}
{5th
Cycle of Discipline}
12~~Why
have You then broken down her hedges,
so
that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
{See
Hosea 4:1-7 - Answer is 'lack of doctrine'. Negative volition to God
and His Word.}
13~~The
boar
{Assyria who administered the 5th cycle to the Northern Kingdom}
out
of the forest does waste it,
and
the wild animal/beast of the field does devour it.
{Chaldea and Rome - both taking out the Southern Kingdom}
{Prayer
for the 2nd Advent of Christ - for the end of the end of the cycle
for both the Northern Kingdom and the Rome discipline of the
Southern
Kingdom}
14~~Return,
we beseech you,
O
Elohiym/Godhead of the armies/hosts.
Look
down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine.
15~~And
the vineyard which Your right hand has planted,
and
the branch that You made strong for Yourself.
{Note:
Jesus Christ is said to be the right hand of the Father. The branch
also is Jesus Christ - His title as the greater son of David. Jesus
Christ started Israel, is the branch and the root of the tree, and
will be the deliverer.}
16~~It
{the vine/Jerusalem here} is burned with fire . . .
it
is cut down.
They
perish at the rebuke of Your face/countenance.
{Note:
Jews suffering under the 5th cycle of discipline.}
{Expression
of Tribulational Believers}
17~~Let
Your hand be upon the 'man of Your right hand'
{Jesus Christ - a reference to concluding the 5th cycle of Discipline
- operation footstool - sit at My right hand until I make Your
enemies as a footstool},
upon
the Son of Man
whom
You made strong for Yourself.
{to make strong means to glorify Jesus Christ as the Unique Person
of the Universe 'Son of Man' is a title for the humanity of Jesus
Christ}
18a~~So
will not we go back from You.
{Note:
The regenerate Jews of the Tribulation will gladly gather around
Jesus Christ when He comes.}
18b~~'Refresh/quicken
us'/'You will cause us to survive",
and
we will call upon Your name.
{The
Refrain of the Song}
19~~
Cause us to be restored again, O 'Elohiym/Godhead,
and
cause Your face to shine . . .
{idiom for restoration of economic prosperity in a national entity}
that
we might receive deliverance.
