Psalms

Chapter 79

1a~~A Psalm {mizmowr} of Asaph.

{Note: Asaph was a prophet, musician and poet - see I Chronicles 6:39. He wrote the Psalms 50 and 73- 83 which is actually poetry.}

1b~~O God {'Elohiym/Godhead},
the heathen have come into Your inheritance {Jerusalem}.

Your holy temple have they defiled.

They have laid Jerusalem on heaps.

{Note: In 721 BC the Assyrians took out the Northern Kingdom under the 5th cycle of discipline. In 586 BC the Chaldeans imposed the 5th cycle of discipline on Jerusalem and burned the city and the temple of God. In 70 AD, the Romans did the same thing. This psalms refers specifically to the Jews going out under the 5th cycle of discipline, but the application could pertain to any client nation to God that gets away from God and His Word - see Hosea 4. Note that the Assyrians and the Chaldeans exceeded their authority from God in imposing discipline on the Jews and each of these great nations was totally destroyed as a result. This time the temple of Jerusalem has yet to be rebuilt. There will be a false temple built in the Tribulation but the true temple will not return until the Millennium.}

2~~The dead bodies of Your servants
have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven . . .
the flesh of your saints . . .
unto the animals of the land.
  {the sign of complete military defeat was that the dead were left
  unburied believers often are caught up in the 5th cycle and also
  die}

3~~Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem.
  {idiom meaning they courageously died to protect their country}

And there was none to bury them.

4~~We are become a reproach to our neighbors . . .
a scorn and derision to them who are round about us.

5~~How long, O Jehovah/God . . .
will You be angry for ever?

Shall Your zeal burn like fire?
  {God's zeal means that a nation must put God and His Word first -
  and if they operate under any other standards, they are not
  serving Him and risk destruction as a nation}

6~~Pour out Your wrath upon the heathen
who have not known You . . .
and upon the kingdoms
that have not called upon Your Name.
  {this prayer was fulfilled later on both the Assyrians and the
  Chaldeans - the Chaldean punishment was delayed because
  Nebuchadnezzar was a believer and many of his people also were -
  so that generation died out the next was destroyed}

7~~For they have devoured Jacob
  {referring to Jacob/Israel - the people who worshiped the God of
  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob}
and laid waste his dwelling place.

8~~O remember not against us former iniquities.

Let Your 'tender mercies' {mixture of God's love and His grace}
speedily 'prevent us'/
'keep us from getting in the way of Your Grace' {qadam}
for we are brought very low {humility learned the hard way}.

9~~Help us, O Elohiym/Godhead of our salvation . . .
for the glory of Your Name.

And deliver us,
and purge away our sins,
for Your Name's sake.

10~~Because why/wherefore
should the heathen say, "Where is their 'Elohiym/Godhead?"

Let him be known among the heathen in our sight
by the revenging of the blood of Your servants
which has been shed.

11~~Let the sighing of the prisoner
  {the Jew under the 5th cycle of Discipline}
come before You . . .
according to the greatness of Your power . . .
preserve those who are appointed to die.
  {this is a prayer we can pray today - as long as the 5th cycle has
  yet to occur our prayers can delay and even prevent its
  happening}

12~~And render unto our neighbors
sevenfold into their bosom
their reproach . . .
wherewith they have reproached You,
O Lord/'Adonay.

13~~So we . . .
Your people . . .
and the sheep of Your pasture . . .
will give You thanks forever.

We will show forth Your praise to all generations.
