Psalms

Chapter 88

{A Sin Unto Death Psalm}
1a~~{Title} 'A Song/Psalm for the sons of Korah . . .
to the chief Musician
upon a 'stringed instrument' {mahalath}
'for singing' {leannoth}.

{Verses 1-2: How the Sin unto Death is Cancelled - Rebound}
1b~~A 'Psalm to Teach One How to Prosper
through the learning of Bible Doctrine' {Maschil} . . .
    {Maschil is the Hiphil participle of sachal - 'meaning to know or be
  wise'. Psalms 32, 42, 44, 45, 74, 78, 88, 89 and 142 are Maschil
  psalms and they all have doctrine and show how to apply it to
  situations. See also II Chronicles 30:22 and Proverbs 16:20}
of Heman/Heyman
  {name means faithful - Heman is found in I Chronicles 33 - the
  grandson of Samuel and a musical genius - had a fantastic voice
  and he was David's favorite soloist - he sung bass}
the Ezrahite.
  {means he was of the tribe of Levi - He wrote this psalm
  and Ethan the Ezrahite wrote Psalm 89 - See I Kings 4:30-31.}

{Rebound (Confession of Man under Sin Unto Death)}
1c~~O Jehovah/God . . .
'Elohiym/Godhead of my salvation,
I have screamed/'yelled in pain'
  {tsa`aq - bringing out the intensity of his suffering}
day and night before You.

2a~~Let my prayer {his rebound prayer}
come before You.

{Note: All prayer is addressed to God the Father. So the member of the Godhead Who is being addressed here is God the Father. Salvation is the basis for the ability to rebound.}

2b~~'Cause You ear to bend way way down low to hear'/
'Incline Your ear'
  {idiom meaning I am so low low low that God will have to bend
  WAY down to hear him}
unto my cry.

{Note: This psalm was written by an unknown believer who was under the sin unto death. He rebounded (I John 1:9) and the sin unto death was removed. This is a rebound psalm to recover from the sin unto death.}

{Verses 3-8: Parenthesis that Describes How Horrible it is under the Sin unto death}
3a~~(For my soul is satiated with troubles/disasters/sufferings.

{Note: If you hurt what do you mention first? You mention what hurts the most! His soul is what hurts the most under the sin unto death. 1st characteristic of sin unto death - a tortured soul.}

3b~~You are causing me to draw near to the grave.
  {naga`-Hiphil causative stem - he recognizes God is
  shortening his life}

4a~~I have received the accounting/computing
of them who go down into the pit.
  {chashab - Niphal passive causative stem - computerized
  principle - recognizing that God had given him X amount of
  time and he is still alive, but because of the sin unto death,
  God is causing his life to be shortened.}

4b~~I am as a 'mighty man' {geber}
who has no strength.
  {'eyal - used to be strong and now is very weak}

5a~~Free among the dying . . .
like the slain that lie in the grave . . .
whom You remembered no more.

{Note: 2nd Characteristic of sin unto death - God is no longer 'remembering you'. You are out as far as He is concerned until or unless you rebound your sins. Means his ration of Grace has been cut off.}

5b~~And they {the dying}
are cut off from Your hand.

{Note: He recognizes he is in a totally helpless situation and 'all the medicine in the world is not going to help him' type thing.}

6~~You have appointed {shiyth} me in the lowest pit . . .
in darkness . . .
  {refers to isolation from the 'details of life' - wealth, friends,
  family etc.}
in the deeps.
  {refers to maximum pressure prior to death}

{Note: 3rd Characteristic of sin unto death - minimum or no 'dying grace'. A believer is taken out horribly (though then of course there are no more regrets in heaven.}

7a~~Your wrath/'divine pressures'
rest heavily upon me.

7b~~You have afflicted me
with all Your waves.
  {the water is getting higher and higher and he is about to
  drown under God's divine discipline.}

Selah.
  {Selah means singers rest and instruments play on - normally
  it is a picture of you resting while the Grace of God continues
  on - but here it means God's pressures continue while the
  believer dying the sin unto death tries to get some relief}

{One of the Pressures - Example - Social Isolation}
8a~~You have caused to put away
'those who really know and intensively love me'
  {yada` - Pual stem - means to 'know' and here means
  someone who actually knows you yet still loves you! This is
  intensive love.}
 far from me.
  {rachaq - means they are 'out of your pasture' but are now in
  the 'pasture of another' - and God caused this!}

{Note: This is intensive suffering. Example would be a man who really loves his wife. But under the discipline of Sin unto death, he is down and out. So she takes up with his worst enemy because she is bitter and knows this will hurt him the most - so she goes to someone else and LETS YOU KNOW IT. REALLY intensive suffering here.}

8b~~You have appointed me {shiyth}
an abomination unto them.
  {tow`ebah - is 'something that causes loathing' - example:
  your ex-wife now not only loves someone else but HATES
  you!}

8c~~I am 'shut up'/'confined to quarters',
and I cannot come forth.)

{Note: Means God has shut down his social life entirely. He is isolated from others - and his former 'loved ones' despise him! Example Saul - he became jealous of David and had to kill him! There is nothing under the sin unto death that is pleasant. Don't think you can 'go have a good (lascivious) time' and then off to heaven where there are no regrets. It is no fun at all to go out under the sin unto death! Much better to die under the dying grace of God!}

{Verse 9-13: Rebound Prayer Continues - Pressure from Sin Unto Death Stimulates Rebound}
9a~~My eyes mourn/'intensively long'/'have unrequited love' {da'ab}
  {idiom for intense suffering in the soul that manifests itself through
  the eye gate - ties back to his greatest hurt - his soul suffering}
by reason of affliction/'maximum soul suffering' {`oniy}.

{Repetitive Rebounding (Principle given not Mechanics here)}
9b~~Jehovah/God, I have called daily upon You.

9c~~I have stretched out my hands unto You.

10a~~Will You show miracles/
'maximum grace to those under difficult situations' {pele'}
to a 'dying person' {muwth - Qal participle}?

{Note: This question demonstrates that the writer is now back oriented to grace. He is saying can God do something for a believer dying the sin unto death, deservedly, though he can not earn or deserve God's forgiveness? And the question is rhetorical in that it requires a positive answer, yes God can.}

10b~~Shall the 'ones who were torn apart in death'
  {rapha' - means one that died horribly - like to step on a landmine
  type dying}
arise and be caused to praise You?

{Note: How can a believer who died the sin unto death be caused to praise God?}

Selah.
  {Selah means singers rest and instruments play on - it is a picture of you resting while the Grace of God continues on}

{It is Who and What God Is that Counts}
11a~~Shall Your graciousness/lovingkindness
be declared/celebrated in the grave?
  {caphar - Pual intensive passive tense}

{Note: Answer is no if this believer went out under the sin unto death - that type of death is nothing to celebrate.}

11b~~Your faithfulness . . . in destruction {the sin unto death}?

12a~~Your miracles . . .
shall they 'receive knowledge/'be known' in the dark?

12b~~Your righteousness {ts@daqah} . . .
in the land of forgetfulness?

{Note: God's righteousness was satisfied at the cross - propitiation - where God's love and righteousness meet with perfect consistency. Means God's righteousness will be known more in the land by God allowing him to live than by God taking his life now. He has rebounded and wants to proclaim the righteousness of God to all who will listen! God is still consistent in His righteousness by remanding the sentence once the person rebounds.}

13a~~But unto You have I 'intensively called for help',
  {shava` - Piel intensive Stem}
 O Jehovah/God.

13b~~And in the morning shall my prayer keep on preventing/forestalling You
  {qadam - Piel intensive and imperfect tense here}.

{Note: Means that he understands that his rebound prayer WILL cause God to remand his death sentence.}

{Note: Chronologically, the psalm ends here. Now he is reviewing all the discipline that brought him to come to rebound and orient to the grace of God.}

{Verses 14-18: More Reason for the Rebound Prayer
  Description of What it is like being under the Sin unto death}

{Verses 14-15: Somewhat the Mechanics of the Sin unto Death}
14a~~(Jehovah/God,
why have You made my soul rancid? {zanach}
  {when the soul stinks too much, out it goes}

14b~~Why do You hide Your face from me?
  {idiom for displeasure - as a woman would veil her face when
  she was mad}

15a~~From my teens {no`ar},
I have been miserable/retched
and in the process of dying.

{Note: There is no good time to neglect rebound, but when you are in your teens, RBT quips that 'double rebound' might be in order! The second is not necessary, but just to be sure you are in fellowship!}

15b~~I suffer Your terrors/horrors
I am distracted/disoriented.

{Verses 16-17: Summary of Sin unto Death}
16a~~Over me has passed Your fierce wrath.

16b~~Your terrors have cut me off.

{Note: Terrors are whatever things God used to impose the sin unto death on him}

17a~~They came round about me daily like water.

{Note: Process of almost drowning over and over is used to express what being under the sin unto death is like.}

17b~~They compassed me about all at once.

18a~~'My most intimate lover' {'ahab}
and acquaintance/'people he knows casually' {rea`}
have You put far from me.

18b~~And 'those who really know and intensively love me'
  {yada` - Pual stem - means to 'know' and here means
  someone who actually knows you yet still loves you! This is
  intensive love.}
into darkness.)
