Romans
Chapter 6
{Chapter 6: If you do not sin to increase grace,
  what do you do to increase grace?}
{Chapter's Emphasis is on 'Position'}
{The Believer's Freedom from Sin's Domination}
{Rhetorical Question with False Conclusions}
1~~To what conclusion are we forced?
  {idiom: literally: 'what shall we say?'}
Are we to remain/continue in {the sovereignty of the}
sin/'old sin nature' {hamartia - singular}
in order that the grace of God may increase?

{Note: Only sloppy thinking would conclude that 'grace' increases because of sin! Even when sin is gone, grace will abound! The source of grace is the Justice of God!}

2~~Emphatically not! {idiom: literally 'let it NOT become so!'}
We, the very ones, {hostis}
who have died to 'the old sin nature'/sin {hamartia - singular},
how {pos} shall we still live {zao} in it
  {in the power of the old sin nature?}?

{Union with Christ Through His Spiritual Death on the Cross}
3~~Or are you ignorant that 'as many as'/'all of us who'
have been identified/baptized {baptizo} into 'Christ'/'Christ Jesus'
  {'Jesus' is in some translations but not in others} . . .
into His death {spiritual death} . . .
have been identified/baptized {baptizo}?

{Note: The baptism here is a dry baptism. It is the baptism of God the Holy Spirit. The baptism of God the Holy Spirit enters the believer into Union with Christ - forming Positional Truth. This verse emphasizes His spiritual death and the next verse emphasizes his physical death (and mentions 'deaths' - plural - He died twice on the cross). This broke the sovereignty of the old sin nature (and death itself) over the human body.}

{Union with Christ in His physical Death and Burial}
4~~Therefore we 'have been buried' {sunthapto}
with Him through identification/baptism
  {by the Holy Spirit}
into His {physical} death,
in order that just as Christ was raised
up from deaths
  {plural - spiritual and physical death - this is important -
  see the concept of "cherem"}
through/"by means of" {dia}
the glory of the Father
  {God the Father raised Christ from the Dead},
so also we might
  {subjunctive - potential only - is up to the
  individual's attitude toward doctrine}
 "walk in an 'unheard-of'/remarkable/'newness of' life"
  {peripateo en kainotes zoe - refers to our way of life -
  'Walk in the Unheard-of Life' - this is
  "Walking in the More Excellent Way Demonstrated by Jesus"}

{Note: This verse emphasizes Union with Christ in His physical Death and Burial. This death terminated the earthly ministry of the 1st Advent of Christ. It is possible for us - the Royal Family - to have an experiential victory equivalent to what God has provided positionally.}

{Note: If you were in an accident and had to learn to walk all over again, you might better see the meaning here. This is a new type of 'spiritual walking'. It comes from the 'energy' of the spirit instead of the 'energy of the flesh' - that source of 'way of live' as unbelievers we all used to operate. It means after out spiritual birth, to re-learn who to walk/operate. The balance and coordination comes from the Word. The orientation to life becomes spiritual and comes from the Word. And, the purpose is spiritual and comes from the Word. But, in this case you have a choice . . . you can to 'walk by the energy of the flesh or you can choose to 'walk by the energy of the Spirit' - learning/applying divine viewpoint to experience.}

{Note: Neos and Kainos are two adjectives for new. Neos is new in the sense of 'what has not occurred before'. Kainos is new in the sense of being 'remarkable' or unheard-of. The Church Age mystery doctrine of the permanent filling of God the Holy Spirit is both unheard-of and remarkable. And, anything unheard of is 'new'.}

5~~ For if we have become 'intimately united' {sumphutos}
{with Him} in the likeness {homoioma}
of His death {Retroactive Positional Truth}
- and we have {1st class condition} -
'not only this, but also' {alla kai}
we will certainly also be . . . {intimately united in the likeness}
of His resurrection   {Current Positional Truth - in Union with Jesus in
  time with Him in heaven}.

{Note: Paul is excited as he contemplates positional truth and then retroactive positional truth. So, his writing style become elliptical. It is appropriate to reach up and insert from prior context the words the writer omitted. This is classical Greek.}

{Note: Retroactive Positional Truth is identification with Christ in His two deaths and burial through the mechanics of the baptism of the Spirit. This is 'taking away the old'.}

{Note: Current Positional Truth is identification with Christ in his resurrection, ascension and session. It says that the believer is - at the point of salvation - ' positionally higher' than angels. A believer is perfect positionally. This is substituting the new (for the old that was taken away in the Retroactive positional Truth).}

6~~'Be knowing this', {ginosko - present active participle is usually
  translated 'having known this'. RBT says here it is used as an
  imperative - special to Koine Greek/found in the NT and papyri,}
that our 'old man' {referring to our Old Sin Nature}
has been crucified together with {Him},
in order that the 'human body' {soma}
with reference to 'its sin nature'/sin {hamartia}
might be rendered inoperative/powerless,
that we should no longer {strong negative adverb 'meketi'}
be slaves {douleuo} to the old sin nature' {hamartia}.

{Note: All personal sins were judicially imputed to Jesus Christ on the cross, judged and immediately forgiven. So, in the Church Age, when we use I John 1:9 and confess our sin/sins, those sins have already been judged are forgiven and we are back in fellowship. 'Human good' and 'human evil' . . . of the non-sin type, was NOT imputed to Christ on the cross. Instead it is called 'works' and, for unbelievers, it is judged at the Great White Throne Judgment - see Revelation 2:12.}

{Explanation of Verse 6}
7~~For {you see} someone who has died
  {Baptism of the Holy Spirit - Retroactive Positional Truth here}
'is acquitted'/'made free'
  {dikaio - judicial term - 'freed from the slave market of sin'}
from {the power of} sin/'the old sin nature' {hamartia}.

8~~Now if we died with Christ - and we did -
  {1st class condition (ei plus the indicative mood in the verb)}
we also believe {used as a system of perception here - belief from
  the daily intake of doctrine}
that we will live in association with Him {Christ}.

9~~Knowing that because Christ
has been raised from deaths {spiritual and physical},
He can absolutely never die {again}.
Death {physical death} has absolutely no {ouk} more dominion/lordship {kurieuo} over Him {any longer}.

{Note: Basileuo is the word for absolute rulership in all circumstances. Kurieuo means to have authority, but also to be subject to other authority elsewhere. So here, this means that death has authority over humans but it has no more authority over Jesus in His resurrection body - He is victorious over death.}

10~~For the death {spiritual death} which He died,
He died once for all to sin/'the sin nature'.
But, in contrast, the life {resurrection life} which He lives,
He lives with reference to The God {God the Father}.

{Application of Above}
11~~So also, on the one hand, all of you yourselves {believers},
'unemotionally reason'/deliberate/'conclude on the basis of thought'/
'thinking based on doctrine in your soul' {logizomai}
yourselves to be dead to sin/'the sin nature' {like a 'divorce' - this
  analogy will be used by Paul coming up in Chapter 7},
but, on the other hand,
living with reference to the God in Christ Jesus
  {in the coming analogy Jesus is the 'second husband and we are
  the bride of Christ after salvation}.

{Note: Logizomai was a word that came up from the Attic Greek. It was used by Plato to describe how the Athenians were allowing their emotions to rule their intellects and were therefore losing their ability to think. It means to think logically, with reason, and emotion may be the 'result' of the thinking, but not the initiator.}

{Note: And, a woman married to her second husband can allow the first husband back into her life. So, can a believer get back involved with one's old sin nature.}

{Application of Above}
12~~Therefore {oun - an inference of what preceded}
do not let the sin/'sin nature' continue
having 'absolute rule/authority' {basileuo}
in your mortal/'subject to death' {thnetos} body {soma} . . .
that you should obey its lusts/trends {epithumia}.

{Note: At salvation you are 'positionally' victorious over the sin nature. But, in experience (experientially} you have the choice of being victorious over the sin nature or continue operating under the 'control of the flesh'.}

{Note: Epithumia means lusts, desires, or even trends. It is the means by which your sin nature rules your body before salvation. After salvation, you have the choice. Either continue to follow the trends/lusts of your human nature - or learn/apply divine viewpoint.}

{Command - Forget 1st Husband and Concentrate 2nd Husband}
13~~Stop placing your members {melos}
  {physical body including the brain},
as weapons of wickedness {adikia},
under orders to sin/'the sin nature'
  {means the sin nature in control of the soul}.
But place yourselves under orders to the God
as those who are alive from deaths
  {identification with Christ in His spiritual and physical deaths}
and your body/members as weapons of righteousness to the God.

{Note: RBT says in Chapter 7, the analogy of marriage will be used to explain the relationship of the Mosaic Law and Christianity. Being under the authority of the old sin nature, is analogous to being married and the husband in the sin nature. The Mosaic Law is the 'marriage counselor'. The Mosaic Law is from God and in itself if right, true and perfect. But legalists have distorted it into a false means of salvation. 'Working'/'Being good' and you will be saved. That is a vile distortion. When you believe in Christ, Christ is your new husband - perfect and True. You are no longer under the authority of your first husband (sin) and the marriage counselor (Mosaic Law) is no longer effective. Instead, respect and love your Husband. Follow His example. Imitate Him. Learn and understand grace - your new marriage counselor.}

{Moving from 1st Husband (Sin) to Our New Husband (Our Lord and Savior)}
14~~For sin/'the sin nature {hamartia - singular}
shall absolutely not have authority/lordship {kurieuo} over you
  {once divorced from the first husband - he has NO authority over
  his former wife! Forget him (your sin nature)!},
because you absolutely keep on not being
under the {Mosaic} law
  {rules governing us under the first marriage - via your 'marriage
  counselor' - the Mosaic Law}
but under grace {charis} {The name of the new 'marriage counselor'/
  policy - God provides under His plan}.

{The Believer's Enslavement to God's Righteousness}
15~~What then {are we to conclude}? {tis oun}
Shall we sin
because we keep on being absolutely not under {the Mosaic} law
but under grace?
Emphatically not! {idiom: literally: 'let it not become so!'}

{Who is the Authority in Your Life?}
16~~Do you absolutely not know/understand {eido}
that if you 'present {paristemi} yourselves'/
'put yourself under orders' as slaves {doulos}
for the purpose of obedience {hupakoe},
you keep on being slaves of the one
to whom you habitually render obedience?
  {which husband will you obey? Your first (old sin nature) or the
  second husband (Jesus Christ and God's plan of Grace) }
Either {slaves} to the sin/'sin nature' {hamartia} . . .
resulting in death {RBT says 'sin unto death' here}
or obedience {to the grace/plan of God} . . .
'resulting in righteousness'/'because of justification' {dikaiosune}.

17~~Now thanks/grace {charis} to the God,
that you were {past tense} slaves to the sin nature.
Moreover, you have obeyed
- by means of the 'right lobe'/heart
  {concentration on the teaching of the Word}-
a system of doctrine . . . into which system of doctrine
you were 'delivered' {paradidomi - same word when used in a
  negative sense for 'betrayed'}.

18~~And by having been set free {eleutheroo}
  {positionally by salvation and experientially by maturity}
out from {apo} sin/'the sin nature' {in spiritual maturity},
you became enslaved {douloo}
to the righteousness {dikaiosune - divine righteousness of God}.

19~~I am speaking {lego} 'in human terms'/'after the manner of men'
because of the weakness of your flesh {sarx}.
For just as you have put your members {melos}
under orders {paristemi - 'put under orders'}
as slaves {doulos} to impurity
  {akatharsia - old sin nature's trend toward sin}
and to lawlessness
  {anomia - old sin nature's trend toward 'human good'}
resulting in lawlessness
  {anomia - old sin nature's trend toward 'evil'},
so now {now that you are saved}
put your members under orders {paristemi - put under orders}
as slaves to righteousness {dikaiosune - righteousness of God}
resulting in {experiential} sanctification.

{Note: Anomia is the lumping together of human good and human evil together. It is unrighteousnesses. And, if it is outside the plan of God, it is not 'divine righteousness' and 'like menstrual rags' to God.}

20~~For as long as
you kept on being slaves of sin/'the sin nature' {as unbelievers},
you were 'excluded'/'set free'/
'not under the authority (slavery)' {eleutheros - plural} -
with reference to the righteousness {dikaiosune}
  {righteousness of God}.

{Note: We saw from above that eleutheros normally means to be 'set free' or 'not under the authority of'. Here RBT says that it also means to be 'excluded from' - in the sense that you are 'free'/excluded from receiving blessings from God. And, here it is plural. So it would be 'frees'. But it really means free from the 5 categories of blessings from God - no spiritual blessings, temporal blessings, blessings by association, historical impact, or dying grace.

21~~{Therefore}, what benefit/fruit/production
were you having and holding {echo}
then/'at that time' {while 'married' to the first husband -
  the old sin nature - between physical birth and salvation)}
from those {old sin nature trends} . . .
over which you are now ashamed?
For the end of those things . . . {is} death {second death and the
  last judgment and the burning of wood, hay and stubble}.

{Note: The analogy to a marriage (see chapter_7 for more direct evidence of this) continues. Your first husband - the old sin nature - 'did things'. Of what benefit did you receive for producing while under the energy of the flesh? The bible says none. That all production under the energy of the flesh is burned away.}

22~~But now,having been set free {positional deliverance accomplished through the Baptism of the H.S., both retroactive and current positional truth}
out from sin/'the sin nature's' {sovereignty} {hamartia}
and, having become slaves to the God . . .
you are having and holding {echo} your benefit/profit/fruit {karpos} with reference to sanctification/'set-apartedness/holiness {hagiasmos} {referring to experiential sanctification here - spiritual maturity}, and the end . . . life everlasting/eternal.

23~~Subsequently/For the 'soldiers wages/rations' {opsonion}
of sin/'the sin nature' {hamartia} . . . {is} death {spiritual death},
but, in contrast,
the 'gracious benefit'/'free gift'
from the source of the God . . . life everlasting/eternal
in Christ Jesus . . . our Lord.
