{Verses
15-25: Attacks of the 1st Husband (the Old Sin Nature) and the
Inter-conflicts this Causes}
{Verses
15-17: First Attack of the 1st Husband (the Old Sin Nature)}
15~~For
what I achieve/accomplish/produce {katergazomai}
I
do not understand
{status quo of the carnal and reversionistic believer}.
Because
what I {legitimately} desire
{thelo - not a lust here, but a righteous desire to please God}
{Paul is again using himself as the example of most believers - they
do want to bring glorify the Lord - they want to allow God to
produce divine good through them, which brings glory to Him but
without
the guidance of God the Holy Spirit while out of fellowship,
they never succeed},
these
things {divine good production that brings glory to the Lord}
I
am not accomplishing/practicing {prasso};
but
what I detest . . . these things
{anything outside the Plan/will of God - NOT from the energy of the
Spirit - but instead human works - production under the energy of
the flesh - wood, hay and stubble},
I
keep on doing {poieo}
{while under the authority of the 1st husband - the old sin nature
per verse 14}.
{Note:
The perpetual state of the carnal or reversionistic believer is a
state of confusion. They do not understand why they are not growing
in spiritual maturity. They also do not understand why God is not
blessing them as they think He should be.}
16~~Now
if I keep on doing {poieo}
this
thing which I absolutely do not desire to do
{anything outside the Plan/will of God},
I
agree {sumphemi}
with
the law {Mosaic Law} . . .
that
it {the law} is noble/advantageous/good {kalos}.
{Note:
Paul is saying that though we are now believers and under a new
'marriage counselor' - God the Holy Spirit - the old 'marriage
counselor' is still from God and is noble and 'to our advantage' to
which to pay attention. In other words, when we do anything that is
not motivated by the energy of the spirit and intended to bring glory
to the Lord, then we are back under the authority of our 1st Husband
- the trends of the Old Sin Nature. So, the Mosaic Law still tells us
what sins and lusts of our nature are all about. Just because it
describes evil, does not mean that it (the Law) is evil itself - it
is not evil but instead noble.}
{Verses
17-19: Inner Conflict Production under the Old Sin Nature Verses
Divine Good Production}
17~~'But
as the case really stands'
{nuni de - an idiom - literally means 'but now'},
I
am no longer performing the same
{the trends of the old sin nature},
but,
in contrast, the sin/'the sin nature' {hamartia}
which
keeps on living in me
{Note:
This means that the sin nature is the source or motivation for Paul
and the rest of us to act outside the plan of God. This verse also
tells us that the Old Sin Nature is resident in the body even after salvation}.
18~~In
fact, I know that there does not dwell in me
(that
is, in my flesh/'human body')
any
'intrinsic good' {agathos}.
For
the will/purpose/desire {thelo} is present in me;
but
the honorable execution/accomplishment of my purpose
is
negative/'absolutely not'
{ouk - meaning is 'absent of any good of intrinsic value no matter
how he tries}.
{Note:
This verse tells us that we are NOT divine and there is nothing
divine in us (per intake of the Word). So from our selves, we cannot
generate any 'good of intrinsic value'. Only by allowing God to work
through us, is divine good produced no matter how honorably we try to
'do good' from our own energy of the flesh.}
19~~For
the 'intrinsic good' {agathos}
-
which I will/purpose/desire {thelo} -
I
absolutely do not do.
But,
in contrast, the evil
which
I absolutely do not will/purpose/desire {thelo}{to do},
this
I keep on practicing.
{Note:
RBT says thelo means to will, purpose or desire from your
emotions/sincerity. Boulema means to will, purpose or desire from
your intellect/knowledge.}
20~~Now
if what I do not desire,
the
same . . . I keep on doing,
I
am no longer the one 'bring it about'/'accomplishing it',
but
'the sin nature'/sin {hamartia}
which
resides inside of me.
{Note:
The source of 'doing what you do not desire' remains the same in the
first and second marriage. But in the first marriage (unbeliever
status) the Old Sin Nature rules your life while you are spiritually
dead. Once saved, it no longer has the authority over your life.}
{Note:
When you are saved, there are sins that you detest and really do not
want to do . . . but you did do it anyway - and that was from your
volitional choice. That is what Paul is addressing here. There is
still sin (interaction with the 1st husband) after the 2nd marriage.
After salvation we are out from under spiritual death. The Old Sin
Nature can only rule over us through lust.}
21~~Consequently/'as
a result',
I
discover this principle
{nomos - law, or Mosaic Law, here used for a 'rule governing ones
action' or principal}
when
I desire to do the honorable thing {kalos},
that
{the principle of} evil {kakos}
resides
in me.
22~~For,
'along with other believers, I delight' {sunedomai}
in
'the law from the God' {meaning bible}
in
the inner man
{the soul - so this means bible doctrine resident in the soul - the
soul is the battleground for the great conflict - free will decisions
for or against God and His will}.
{Note:
Sunedomai - sune means with and domai means delight. RBT, says it is
used for having delight with others. Here is means with other believers.}
23~~But,
in contrast, I see/'glace at' {blepo}
another
of a different kind of principle {nomos}
in
the 'members of my body' {melos}
'campaigning
against' {antistrateuomai}
the
principle of my mind {nous - the left lobe, gnosis doctrine only},
and
so making me a prisoner {aichmalotizo}
{only doctrine transferred to the right lobe (cardia) is usable.
Doctrine on the launching pad in the left lobe (nous) is not yet
useable so it loses to the OSN and you become reversionistic}
to
the principle of 'the sin nature'/sin . . .
the
same being located in the 'members of my body'
{melos - the old sin nature is in every chromosome in the body -
the only exception is the female egg that is purified through
polarization as it is released each month ready for fertilization -
SideNote - this was the reason for the need of the virgin
birth.
The female egg is without the imputation of Adam's sin. So, with
no human father, the baby Jesus Christ was born perfect. He
remained perfect throughout His human life and could therefore
go
to the cross as the lamb without spot (sinless)}.
24~~I
am a miserable person
{Paul taking the viewpoint of a reversionist under discipline}!
Who
shall rescue me from the body of this death?
25~~Grace
belongs to the God {charis to Theo},
through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
So
then, on the one hand {men de},
-
with my mind -
{nous - here the mind is used to contrast soul thinking from energy
of the flesh}
I
myself serve/'am a slave to' {douleuo}
the
law/principal of God
{mentally desires to be follow the Will of God - which in the
analogy
is to be under the authority of the 2nd husband - Jesus Christ}.
But,
on the other hand {men de},
with
my flesh {sarx} . . .
I
myself serve/'am a slave to'
{classical Greek style - need to repeat above verb phrase}
the
law/principle of sin/'the sin nature' {hamartia - singular}
{the law or principal of the sin nature means to our desire to lust
and/or act on those lusts/trends of the Old Sin Nature}.
{Note:
Paul is discussing the inner conflict of most Christians. They are
saved and want to do what Jesus Christ wants them to do. But, because
of the influence of the Old Sin Nature, they periodically sin because
of the 'lusts' or desires of the flesh and therefore are under the
authority again of the 1st husband.}
{Note:
RBT says Paul uses a lot of Classical Greek here. 'Men de' is
classical Greek for (men) 'on the one hand' and then (de) 'on the
other hand'.}
