II Samuel

Chapter 5

1~~Therefore, all {the elders} of Israel
gathered themselves together before David at Hebron, saying,
"Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.

{Note: See I Chronicles 11 for a parallel passage of this event.}

2~~And in time past,
even when Saul was king,
you {David} were the one
who 'was our military commander'/'lead us out'
and 'exercised command over'/'brought us in' Israel.

And Jehovah/God said unto you,
'You . . . and you only . . . will shepherd My people Israel,
and you . . . and you only . . . will be prince over My people Israel."

3~~Therefore all the elders of Israel
came to the king {David} to Hebron
and David made a contract with them in Hebron
before Jehovah/God.

And they anointed {mashach}
David king over all Israel.

4``David was thirty years old when he began to reign,
and he reigned forty years.

5``In Hebron he reigned over Judah
seven years and six months
and, in Jerusalem,
he reigned thirty and three years
over all Israel and Judah
  {See also I Chronicles 29:27}.

{Note: RBT says David had classes of Knighthood as follows:
  Top knight - Joab - II Samuel 5:6-8
  Knights of the 1st Class - II Samuel 23:8-17
  Knights of the 2nd Class - II Samuel 23:18-23
  Knights of the 3nd Class - II Samuel 23:24-29.}

{Verses 6-8: Joab - David's Greatest Knight}
6~~And the king and his army
advanced {aggressively} to {what would be} Jerusalem
against the Jebusites . . . the inhabitants of the land.

And, they {the Jebusites arrogantly} said to David . . . saying,
"You will never get in here . . .
unless you cause the blind and the lame to retreat!

They said this thinking in themselves
that David can not come.

{Note: It is important to understand Psalm 115 to understand this section. David is not biased against 'handicapped' people! From Psalm 115, we see that David would take his men and scout the fortification. He would yell up at the Jebusites that they relied on their false idols of war gods placed on their embattlements. He would say they are blind and can not walk! So, here the Jebusites shouts are two fold in meaning. First it means that their walls are so strong, their healthy soldiers can go relax and the lame and blind ones can defend the city from David. And, they are saying that the idols on their walls of their war gods will protect them against the Jews invisible God!}

7~~Nevertheless David captured/'seized by force'
the castle of Zion . . .
the same . . . {is} the city of David.

8~~And David commanded on that day,
"Whoever slaughters the Jebusites . . .
also let him reach out for the 'blind and the lame' . . .
  {calling the entire Jebusite army the blind and the lame -
  they worship blind and lame carved idols that are dead
  and are therefore dead inside themselves - David will order
  all the false idols thrown off the battlements and no idols
  will be permitted in Jerusalem while David is alive}

(who {'the lame and blind'/'idols of false gods'}
are always being hated by David's soul . . .)

reach them by way of the battlements . . .
  {no surprise attack through the sewers for example - a frontal
  assault}

he shall be 'Chief of staff'
  {from I Chronicles 11:6 we see Joab was the one to kill the first
  Jebusite} ."

Wherefore they said {a proverb grew out of this occasion},
"The 'blind and the lame' {idols of false gods}
shall never come into the house."

9~~And David 'dwelt in prosperity' in the castle.

Therefore they called it the city of David.

{Note: This was a fort on one side of the hilltop. On the other side, David built Fort Millo (next verse). In between the city of Jerusalem developed. How David felt, he expressed in Psalm 30.}

And he was in the process of building {banah}
the city from a perimeter
  {David built defense lines and consolidated their positions and
  moved out. Next they built fortifications around the hilltop to
  prevent counter attacks - then the moved out to build the city on
  the hilltop - then fortifications at the bottom of the hill. This 'holy
  city' was built on a military principal!},
even from Fort Millo {ha millow' - name itself means 'Fort'} . . .
{as far as} the perimeter/round {type fort}
  {what we have here is David's version of our Pentagon. He is
  building an outer defensive perimeter fortification}.

10~~And David went on, and became greater and greater,
because Jehovah/God . . .'Elohiym/Godhead of the armies/hosts
was with him.

11~~And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David,
with cedar trees, and carpenters, and stone masons.

And they built David a mansion/castle.

{Note: Hiram, king of Tyre was a great fan of intelligence. He recognized it both in David and later in his son Solomon. So Hiram was responsible for not only building David a great castle of stone, lined with cedar and great cedar doors, but he built another castle for Solomon 33 years later. Tyre was a fortified island that was said to be unconquerable. But Alexander the Great spent 7 months building a bridge out to the island and eventually took the island.}

12~~Now David realized that Jehovah/God
had established him king over Israel,
and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

13~~So meanwhile,
after he had come from Hebron
  {from David's just ruling the southern Kingdom}
David took him more mistresses/concubines
and wives from Jerusalem.
  {Polygamy and sexual arrogance of David}

And there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

14-16`` And these be the names of those
who were born unto him in Jerusalem;
Shammuah,
and Shobab,
and Nathan,
and Solomon, 15``
Ibhar also,
and Elishua,
and Nepheg,
and Japhia, 16``
and Elishama,
and Eliada,
and Eliphalet.

{2nd Philistine Invasion}
17~~Now when the Philistines heard
that they had anointed/crowned David king over Israel,
all the Philistines were motivated to go up
for a 'search and destroy mission' against David.

Consequently, David heard of it,
and went down to his headquarters.

18~~The Philistines invaded
and were concentrated in the valley of Rephaim
  {which is the 'valley of the Giants'}.

19~~Therefore David made inquiry of Jehovah/God, saying,
"Shall I attack the Philistines?

Will You give them into my hands?"

So Jehovah/God replied unto David,
"Attack. For I will definitely give the Philistines into your hand."

20~~So David advanced to Baalperazim.

Consequently David defeated there.

Therefore, he said,
"Jehovah/God has broken through the line of my enemies to the front,
like the waters breaking through a dam.

Therefore he named the battlefield Baalperazim
  {name means 'the Lord breaks through'}.

21~~Also there they abandoned their idols/images {`atsab},
and David and his men kept on burning/destroying them.

22~~Now once again the Philistines invaded/'advanced up'
  {from sea level to a higher area},

and 'concentrated' themselves {concentration of troops}
in the valley of Rephaim.

{Note: They assume David will attack again as he had just done and won decisively.}

23~~Therefore David made inquired of Jehovah/God {battle prayer},
He replied, "You shall not make a frontal assault,
but 'execute a single envelopment' behind them
  {to circle behind them},
and attack them from the mulberry grove/trees. 24~~
And it shall be, when you hear the sound
of marching {ts@`adah} in the tops of the mulberry trees
  {the signal for the attack to begin},
that then you will attack immediately {charats}
  {means Philistines have shifted their troops to set up an ambush
  and that is when to hit them}
for then shall Jehovah/God advance before you,
to annihilate the army/host of the Philistines.

{David's Complete Obedience and Execution of God's Decree}
25~~Consequently David executed/ manufactured {`asah},
as Jehovah/God had commanded him;
and annihilated the Philistines between Geba and Gazer
  {an 18 mile pursuit}.
