Isaiah

Chapter 33

{Note: This is circa 745BC. The Assyrians have not lost a battle in 200 years. Sennacherib is the sadistic ruler and his great general is Rabshakeh. They have defeated all the major armies of the world, sacking, torturing horribly, raping, and enslaving populations. But in Jerusalem, Isaiah had taught doctrine daily for a year and many had become mature. They sat on the wall and laughed at this huge army at their gates. The Assyrians did not have a chance! The Lord was on their side!}

{Message to the Attack of the Unprovoked Assyrians}
1~~Woe to you who spoil/'plunder, rape, steal' {shadad},
and you were not spoiled spoiled/'plundered, raped, stolen from'.

And dealt treacherously,
and they dealt not treacherously with you!

When you shall cease to spoil,
you shall keep on being
caused to be destroyed/'spoiled
  {shadad - Hophal imperfect}.

And when you shall make an end to deal treacherously,
they shall deal treacherously with you.

{Note: Isaiah's prophecy will come true in 82 years. The fall of the Assyrian empire is so unbelievable that for years, the 'historians' did not believe it. In the 20th Century, discoveries have show just how great their fall was.}

2~~O Jehovah/God, give grace to us.
  {chanan - imperative mood - an order}

We have waited/'faith resting while taking in doctrine daily'/
'deeply trusted in you in the past with the result that we
continue to trust in you' {qavah - Piel Perfect tense}
for You.

You be their {the remaining Jewish Army's} arm
every morning.

{You are} Our deliverance also in the time of trouble.

{Note: Qavah in the Piel intensive stem is the strongest Hebrew word for 'Faith Rest' - Putting your intensive faith in the Lord that He will take care of you. The perfect tense indicates action completed in the past with results that last forever.}

{Verses 3-4 Back to the Fall of Nineveh in 82 years}
3~~At the noise of the tumult the people {the Assyrian's} fled.

At the lifting up of Yourself {God's discipline}
the nations were scattered.

4~~And Your spoil shall be gathered
like the gathering of the caterpillar.

As the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them.

5~~Jehovah/God receives exaltation/glory.

For He permanently dwells {shakan}
on High {in heaven}.

He has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.
  {Isaiah's teaching has revived objective justice in Jerusalem -
  justice has returned in the last year}

{The Remnant's Assets}
6~~And wisdom and knowledge
are the stability of your times . . .
and riches of deliverance.
  {Riches of deliverance is doctrine resident in your soul - the ECS -
  these men sat on the wall of Jerusalem and laughed at the huge,
  powerful Assyrian Army}

The 'fear of Jehovah/God'/'Occupation with Christ'
is His treasure.

7 Behold, their valiant ones shall cry outwardly.

The ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.

8 The highways lie waste,
the wayfaring man ceases.

He has broken the covenant,
he has despised the cities,
he regards no man.

9 The earth mourns and languishes.

Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down.

Sharon is like a desert/wilderness.

And Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.

10 "Now will I rise,"
said Jehovah/God,
"now will I be exalted.

Now will I lift up Myself. 11

You shall conceive chaff,
you shall bring forth stubble.

Your breath, as fire, shall devour you. 12

And the people shall be as the burnings of lime . . .
as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire. 13

Hear, you that are far off, what I have done
and, you that are near, acknowledge My might. 14

The sinners in Zion are afraid.

Fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites.

Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire?

Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? 15

He who Walks righteously, and speaks uprightly . . .
he who despises the gain of oppressions . . .
who shakes his hands from holding of bribes,
who stops his ears from hearing of blood,
and shuts his eyes from seeing evil . . . 16
he shall dwell on high.

His place of defense shall be the munitions of rocks.

Bread shall be given him.

His waters shall be sure. 17

Your eyes shall see the King in His beauty.

They shall behold the land that is very far off.

18 Your heart/'right lobe' shall meditate terror.

Where is the 'one counting/reckoning'?

Where is the 'one weighing/paying'?

Where is the one counting the towers? 19

You shall not see a fierce people,
a people of a deeper speech than you can perceive . . .
of a stammering tongue that you can not understand. 20

Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities.

Your eyes shall see Jerusalem, a quiet habitation,
a tabernacle that shall not be taken down.

Not one of the stakes thereof
shall ever be removed,
neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken. 21

But there the glorious Jehovah/God
will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams;
wherein shall go no galley with oars,
neither shall gallant ship pass thereby. 22

For Jehovah/God is our judge,
Jehovah/God is our lawgiver,
Jehovah/God is our King . . .
He will deliver/save us. 23

Your ropes/cords are loosed.

They could not well strengthen their mast,
they could not spread the sail.

Then is the prey of a great spoil divided.

The lame take the prey. 24

And the inhabitant shall not say, 'I am sick.'

The people who dwell therein
shall be forgiven their 'punishment for sin'/iniquity {`avon}."
