Mark

Chapter 2

2:1``And, having again entered into Capernaum . . .
after some days . . .
He {Jesus} was heard of as being at home.

2:2``And there were gathered together many,
so that no longer was there room to receive them
not even at the door.

And, He {Jesus} kept on
'talking to them about the Word'/'preaching the Word to them'.

{Note: The principal is you can not do God's will if you do not understand God's will. God's will for us today is compete and in writing. We need to habitually study the Word . . . THEN we apply it to experience.}

2:3``And they come face to face with Him . . .
  {trying to get close to Jesus with their sick friend}
carrying a paralytic being carried {airo} by four {men}.

2:4``And, 'not being able'/'not having the power' {dunamai}
to bring the paralytic to a place before Him . . .
because of the crowd,
  {it was too thick and unmoving}
they unroofed/uncovered {apostegazo} the roof where He was.

And having dug through it {the roof} {exorusso},
they lowered the stretcher
on which the paralytic was lying.

2:5``And, Jesus, having seen their faith,
He says to the paralytic, "Child {teknon}, your sins
have been forgiven in the past with the result that they
{his former sins} are forgiven forever {aphiemi - perfect tense}."

{Note: Actually this verse is quite a big deal! Remember, only God can forgive sins! This will really stir up the 'religious leaders' of the day!}

2:6-7``And there kept on being certain
of the scribes/'experts in the law'
sitting there and debating in their hearts/minds/'right lobes', 2:7``
  {dialogizomai - to think over and over to themselves
  kardia - means heart - it is used as an idiom for the 'thinking part
  of the soul'}
"Why is this one speaking in this manner?

He {Jesus} is blaspheming!

Who 'is able'/'has the power' {dunamai}
to 'put away'/forgive {aphiemi} sins . . .
except 'God alone'/'one person . . . God'?"

2:8-9``And immediately,
having 'become fully aware'/'greater knowledge {epiginosko}
in His 'inner-most being'/'{rational} spirit' {pneuma}
that in this manner they were debating within themselves
He {Jesus}says to them,
"Why are you 'thinking such things'/
"debating these things in your 'right lobes'/hearts"? 2:9``
Which of the two is easier to say to the paralytic,
'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say,
'Be arising and pick up your stretcher, and keep on walking?' "

2:10-11``But, for the purpose that,
you may 'have absolute knowledge
in the past with results that last forever' {oida - perfect tense}
that the 'Son of Man' {huios anthropos}
'has and holds' {echo} authority {exousia}
to forgive sins on the earth,"
He {Jesus} says to the paralytic, 2:11``
" 'I tell you'/'To you I say' . . .
be arising, pick up your stretcher at once,
and be going away into your home."

2:12``And, he arose, and immediately,
having picked up his stretcher,
he went out before all of them,
so that they were astonished for some time,
and were glorifying/praising God, saying,
"'We have never seen anything like this!'/
 'In this manner, never have we seen it!' "

2:13``And He {Jesus} went out again along the seashore.

And all the crowd kept on coming face to face with Him . . .
  {so what does He do?}
and He kept on teaching {didasko} them.

{Note: Paul says, "Imitate me . . . as I imitate Jesus." They were both teachers of the Word. If you are a teacher teach. If you do not have this gift, then to imitate Him, you must be the serious student of the Word. Then apply what you learn to your daily life - under the filling of God the Holy Spirit (via I John 1:9).}

2:14``And, as He {Jesus} was passing by,
He saw Levi . . . the son of Alphaeus,
sitting at the tax booth,
and He said to him,
"Start following with Me, and continue to do so as a habit of life'
  {akoloutheo - an order - means to follow along as a student/disciple
  follows a teacher}."

And,having risen, he {Levi} 'followed Him as a student' {akoloutheo}.

2:15``And it came to pass
  {ginomai - means to become what it was not before - used often
  as a 'change of subject'}
that, as He {Jesus} was 'reclining at the diner table'
  {katakeimai - describes the dining style of the day -
  laying down, reclining, resting on one elbow - like the Romans
  did}
in his {Levi's} home, many tax collectors
  {telones - these were forced by Rome to collect taxes from their
  territories - they had to turn in X amount and paid it themselves if
  they were short - most became corrupt and gorged the people for
  personal profit and were a hated class of people}
and sinners
  {hamartolos - of all kinds - here probably a number of prostitutes}
were eating with Jesus and His students/disciples . . .
  {mathetes - means to be a student under the authority of a
  Teacher - that is what a disciple means}
for there were many
who 'followed with Him as His student' {akoloutheo}.

2:16``And, when the scribes/'experts in the law' {grammateus}
belonging to the sect of the Pharisees
  {there are three basic political parties in the Sanhedrin counsel
  1) Pharisees, 2) Sadducees, and 3)Herodions}
having seen that He {Jesus} was eating
with the sinners and tax collectors,
were saying to His students/disciples,
"Why is He eating with tax collectors and sinners?"

{Note: The Pharisees were believers in God and considered the Old Testament as God's Word. The scribes were a section of them that studied and gave opinions on the more difficult scriptures. The Sadducees did not believe the OT was the Word of God, but used it as a tool to gain control over the people. The Herodions supported Herod and were happy to keep Rome over Israel (so they could remain in power!).}

2:17``And, having heard, Jesus says to them,
"It is absolutely not {ouk} the strong who need a physician . . .
but the sick.

I have absolutely not {ouk} come
to call the righteous/just {dikaios} . . . but sinners {hamartolos}."

{Note: The point to keep in mind, is that His perfectly righteous soul was not pleased to be among sinners! He was among sinners to evangelize them - to save their souls! Then to teach the converted to become mature believers.}

2:18``And, the students/disciples of John {John the Herald/Baptizer}
and the Pharisees were observing a fast.

And, they come and say to Him {Jesus},
"Why do the students/disciples of John
and the students/disciples of the Pharisees fast . . .
but Your students/disciples absolutely do not {ouk} fast?"

2:19``And, Jesus said to them,
"Are the 'sons/friends {huios} of the bridegroom/
"wedding guests on the groom's side"
'able'/'having the power to' {dunamai} fast
while the bridegroom is with them? {requires a no response}

As long as they have the bridegroom with them
they absolutely 'can not {ouk}'/'do not have the power' to fast.

{Note: See Matthew 9:14. During this time the groom showed up at the bride's house, having already negotiated the dowry, and picked her up and took her to his house or the house of his parents. The groom's friends were already in the house living it up as the brides' friends waited outside until the bride showed up. The groom was the host and everyone stayed for the duration of the honeymoon. In the analogy, the wedding guests are believers and the groom is Jesus Christ. While Jesus was on the Earth they all should be having a wonderful time!}

2:20``But days are coming of such a character,
when the bridegroom will be taken from them
and then on that day they will fast.

2:21``No one sows a patch
consisting of new/unprocessed {agnaphos} cloth
on an old/worn-out garment.

Otherwise, the patch pulls away from it . . .
the new from the old/worn-out . . .
and the tear becomes worse.

2:22``And no one puts newly-made wine
into old/worn-out wineskins.

Otherwise, the wine will burst the wineskins,
and both the wine and the wineskins are destroyed.

But newly-made wine is put into wineskins
which are just beginning to be used."

{The Religious Taboo of 'Working on a Sabbath'}
2:23``And it came to pass {change of subject},
that on the Sabbath,
He {Jesus} was proceeding along a path through grain fields
and His students/disciples began to be making their way
picking off some grain as they were going along.

2:24``And the Pharisees kept on saying to Him {Jesus},
"Observe that, will You.

Why are they doing on the Sabbath
that which is absolutely not {ouk} lawful?"

2:25-26``And, He {Jesus} says to them,
"You have read, have you not,
what David did when he had need and was hungry,
he and those with him? 2:26``
How he {David} entered into the house of God
when Abiathar was high priest
and the 'loaves that were set forth' {artos - shewbread}, he ate . . .
which is absolutely not {ouk} lawful to eat except for the priests
and he also gave it to those who were with him?"

2:27``And He {Jesus} was saying to them,
"The Sabbath . . . for the sake of man . . . came into being
and not man . . . for the sake of the Sabbath.

{Note: God commanded that man was to rest on the Sabbath as a blessing to him. Instead, many use it as a tool to force their will on others - 'you WILL NOT do this on a Sabbath' type thing. That is misusing God's Word. Next, in the Church Age, we are now to live 'everyday as unto the Lord'. That is a HIGHER law and better Way of life only available to priests - which we all are!}

2:28`` 'For this reason'/'So that'
the 'Son of Man' {humanity of Jesus}
is Lord . . . even of the Sabbath."

{Note: The Deity of Jesus Christ is the Creator of the universe. He is Lord of all. Now also as the Son of Man, we see that His humanity, in Hypostatic Union with His Deity is also 'Lord of All'. That includes the Sabbath.}
