Mark
Chapter
3
3:1``And
He {Jesus} entered again into a synagogue,
And
a man was there in that place
whose
one hand had withered.
3:2``And,
they {the Pharisees who continued to dog His steps}
kept
on 'spying on Him'/'watching Him carefully' {paratereo}
as
to whether He would heal him on the Sabbath . . .
in
order that they might 'accuse Him'/
'bring
a formal accusation against Him before a tribunal' {kategoreo}.
3:3``And
He {Jesus} says to the man having the withered hand,
"Arise/'Get
up' and stand 'among everyone'/'in the midst'."
3:4``And
He {Jesus} says to them,
"Is
it lawful on the Sabbath,
to
do good {agathopoieo} or evil {kakopoieo} . . .
to
save { sozo} life/soul {psuche} or 'destroy it'/kill {apokteino}?"
But
they kept on being quiet.
3:5``And,
having looked round about on them
{periblepo - blepo is a 'bleep on a radar screen' - a quick glance -
at each of them}
with
'righteous indignation'/anger
{orge - when taking about a perfect Being, Who knows all the facts
and makes the perfect decision based on His perfect righteousness
- 'righteous indignation' is better here} ,
being
grieved at the hardness {purosis} of their hearts/'right lobes',
He
{Jesus} said to the man {with the withered hand},
"Stretch
out your hand at once."
And,
he stretched it out . . .
and
it was 'restored to its former state' {apokathistemi}.
{Note:
Your soul is the storehouse of thought. 'What you think in your
soul, is what you really are'. The Mind of Christ (doctrine) is the
Light of the World. All other viewpoint is darkness. If one's soul is
so void of Light, it is so dark, it is referred to as being hard and
implacable. Light will not penetrate. This is the point that person
will normally die the sin unto death or God keeps alive to
test/try/prove believers growing in spiritual maturity (example: the
Pharaoh of the Exodus Generation).}
3:6``And,
having gone out,
the
Pharisees at once . . . with the Herodians
began
plotting/'giving counsel against Him' . . .
as
to how they might 'assassinate Him'/'destroy Him' {apollumi}.
3:7-8``And
Jesus, with His students/disciples
withdrew
to the sea,
and
a great multitude from Galilee followed . . .
and
from Judea, 3:8``and Jerusalem, and from Idumea,
and
across the Jordan {River}, and around Tyre and Sidon . . .
a
great multitude hearing constantly of such great things
which
He is continually doing, came to Him.
3:9``And,
He {Jesus} spoke to His students/disciples
to
the effect that they should always keep a small boat
in
readiness for Him . . . because of the crowd . . .
in
order that they might not crush/'press toward' {thlibo} Him.
3:10``For
He {Jesus} had healed many, so that as a result,
they
kept on jostling Him in order that they might be touching Him. . .
as
many as had a distressing bodily disease {mastix}.
3:11``And
the spirits, the unclean ones,
as
often as they 'set eyes' {theoreo} on Him,
{theoreo - from which we get theory - means to see with the eyes
and arrive at a conclusion - these 'unclean spirits'/'fallen angels'
knew Him (their enemy), recognized His delegated authority
and obeyed His commands.}
kept
on falling prostrate before Him,
and
kept on crying out with a loud voice, saying,
"As
for You . . . You are the 'Son of God' {Huios Theos}."
3:12``And
He {Jesus} kept on
'rebuking
and charging them under penalty' {epitimao}
that
they should not "possibly 'make Him known'/'say Who He is' ".
3:13``And
He {Jesus} goes up into the mountain
and
'calls face to face . . . to Himself . . . and for Himself'
{proskaleomai - middle voice - it was in His own interest}
those
whom He desired.
And
they went off to Him.
3:14-15``And
He {Jesus} made/appointed/ordained
twelve
in order that they might constantly be with Him
and
He could 'send on a mission under His authority' {apostello}
to
preach/herald/'make public proclamation of the gospel
and
things related to it' {kerusso} . . . 3:15``
and
to have and hold 'authority' {exousia}
to
cast out demons {daimonion}.
{Note:
Exousia is very important here. It is not dunamis - power. They are
being sent under Jesus' 'delegated authority'. When they properly
call for the removal of demons, the God removes them. He has the power.}
3:16``And,
He {Jesus} appointed the Twelve.
He
" 'placed upon' Simon"/'added to Simon's name' . . .
Peter
{Petros}.
{Petros - means 'chip'; Petra means 'huge rock': The deity of Jesus
Christ keeps on being the Huge Rock. An honorable and humble
term is to be surnamed - 'chip off the Huge Rock'}
{Verses
17-19: Other Apostles}
3:17-19``And
James . . . {the son} of Zebedee
and
John . . . the brother of James,
He
{Jesus} gave the name 'Boanerges' . . . that is, 'Sons of Thunder'.
{Sons of Thunder again is an honorable title. This describes their
zeal and impetuosity and huge speaking voices. They were a loud
and energetic pair of brothers}
3:18``And
Andrew
{name
comes from aner which means a 'noble man' -
name means 'manly'},
Philip
{name means 'fond of horses' - an equestrian},
Bartholomew
{name means 'son of Tolmai'},
Matthew
{name means 'a gift of God'},
Thomas
{name means 'a twin'} . . . the son of Alphaeus,
Thaddaeus
{also called 'the other Judas' - Wuest says Thaddaeus is the
Judas of John 14:22},
Simon
the Canaanean/Canaanite.
3:19``And
Judas Iscariot
{Iskariotes - place where Judas was from - means 'men of Kerioth'
- see Joshua 15:25} . . .
who
also 'betrayed Him'/'handed Him over' {paradidomi}.
3:20``And
He {Jesus} comes home
{indicating now in a house instead of in the mountains}.
And
the crowd gathered {reassembled} again . . .
so
that they 'did not have the power'/'were not able' {dunamai}
so
much as to eat.
{Note:
The picture here is of a crowd so hungry . . . some for the Word . .
. and others for the Miracles . . . nevertheless, they came so
quickly that they did not eat or do anything else - just had to
get
near to Him.}
3:21``And,
having heard,
those
nearest Him {para} {meaning in blood ties - family}
went
out for the purpose
'of
taking Him by force'/'taking control of Him' {krateo} . . .
for
they kept on saying, "He is out of His mind."
{existemi idiom: literally 'He is beside Himself' - does mean they
thought He had gone off the deep end'}
3:22``
And, the scribes/'experts in the law' . . .
the
ones from Jerusalem said,
"He
has Beelzebub/Beezeboul {Beelzeboul},"
and,
"By means of 'the ruler {archon} of demons'
He
{Jesus} casts out demons."
{Note:
Wuest says Beezebul is a derogatory term probably referring to Satan
himself. It means 'god of flies' or 'god of the dung'. The Ekronites
(a Philistine people) had a god called 'Beezeboub' and this 'title'
might have been carried over from them to be applied to Satan.}
3:23``And,
having called them to Him,
He
{Jesus} was speaking to them in parables {parabole}:
"How
can/'is it possible'
{idiom: literally 'By what power can {dunamai} . . .'}
Satan
cast out Satan?
{Note:
Parabole means 'to throw along side'. It means to tell a story that
everyone (in this day and culture) would understand immediately. But,
hidden inside is the 'double meaning' - the spiritual implications
that only believers could come to understand (with consistent intake
of the Word).}
3:24``And,
if {ean}
a
house {oikia - used for the belonging of a clan or family}
may
be divided against itself {merizo - subjunctive mood}
-maybe
it will be, maybe it will not be {3rd class conditional if} -
that
house absolutely will not be able/'have the power' to stand.
3:26``And
if {ei}
Satan
rises up against himself {anistemi - indicative mood}
-and
it is true {1st class conditional if} -
and
is divided in the past with the result that he {his house}
is
divided forever {merizo - perfect tense},
he
{Satan} absolutely
'is
not {ouk} able'/'does not have the power' to stand
but
in contrast {alla}
'has
and holds' {echo} . . . 'an end'/'a finish' {telos - present tense}.
3:27``But
absolutely no {ouk} one
'is
able'/'has the power' {dunamai} . . .
having
entered the house of the 'strong man'
{ischuros - strong in body or mind},
to
thoroughly ransack his 'household goods/property' {skeuos},
unless
first he may bind {deo} this strong man . . .
and
then he will thoroughly plunder his house.
{Jesus
Changes His Tone from addressing 'Theorists' To Address them Personally}
3:28-30``
'I {Jesus} tell you the truth'/'Point of Doctrine'/
'Surely
of a truth I am saying to you'{amen},
"All
sins shall be forgiven the sons of men . . .
and
all blasphemies/'malicious misrepresentations'
as
many as they use to defame; 3:29``
but
whoever may blasphemes/'maliciously misrepresents'
the
Holy Spirit, absolutely never {ouk} has forgiveness,
but,
in contrast, he is guilty {enochos}
of
an everlasting sin . . . 3:30``
because
they kept on saying, "He has an unclean spirit."
3:31``And
there comes to Him {Jesus}
His
mother and His brethren.
And,
standing outside, they sent to Him . . . calling/summoning Him.
{Note:
Above in context, apparently Jesus' brothers and mother thought He
had gone crazy and they had come for the express purpose to take Him
away. That is why they were summoning Him.}
3:32``And,
the crowed was sitting in a circle around Him,
and
they say to Him, "Behold/Look,
Your
mother and Your brothers and Your sisters
outside
are seeking You."
3:33``And
'having an answer for'/'giving a discerning answer
from
the ultimate source of Himself to' {apokrinomai} them He says,
"Who
is my mother and my brethren?"
{remember the purpose for this visit is not a 'social call'!}
3:34-35``And
having looked round about upon those
sitting
in a circle around Him {listening to Him teaching the Word},
He
says, "Behold . . . my mother and my brethern . . . 3:35``
whoever
does the will of God . . .
this
one is My brother and sister and mother."
{Note:
Remember to keep the cart before the horse. You must KNOW the will
of God before you can DO the will of God. Those in the circle around
Him were listening to Him teach doctrine. Today we must consistently
study the Word of God under the guidance of our right 'shepherd with
His delegated authority'. Once we come to KNOW His will, then we can
voluntarily decide to put His thoughts/viewpoint into action.}
