Chapter 5
{Healing of a Demoniac}
1~~So they went to the other side of the sea,
to the region of the Gerasenes {across the sea of Galilee}.

{Note: This region was where the bootleggers would hang out and deal in pork.}

2~~And when He {Jesus} had come out of the ship,
there met Him from out of the tombs
  {mnemeion - caves used for burial - this man lived with corpses}
with an unclean spirit {pneuma} {demon possessed}.

3-4~~Who lived among the tombs,
and no one had the power to bind him,
not even with chains {abnormal strength}4~~
because when he had often been bound perfectly
with chains on hands and feet,
and he had torn the chains apart
and broke the shackles in pieces.

Neither could any man tame/calm him.

5~~And always night and every day
among the tombs and in the mountains,
he was constantly screaming
and constantly gashing himself with rocks.

6~~But when he saw Jesus from a distance,
he ran and prostrated himself before Him.

{Note: The man does not like the demon possession but he cannot control it.}

7~~Then he {the demon} shouted out with a loud voice,
"What have I to do with You,
  {idiom: means 'Leave me alone'},
Jesus, Son of the Most High God!

I implore you by God - do not torment me!"

{Note: This demon knows doctrine. He recognizes His humanity by calling Him Jesus, yet also recognizes He is also the Son of God - he understands the doctrine of the Hypostatic Union.}

8~~(For Jesus had been constantly saying unto him,
"Come out of that man, you unclean spirit!")

9~~ He {Jesus} interrogated {eperotao}
him {the spokesman of the demons},
"What is your name?"

And he had an answer
from the ultimate source of himself {apokrinomai},
"My name is Legion
  {large segment of a Roman army - 6 -12 thousand},
for we keep on being many."

10~~He beseeched Him {Jesus} insistently
not to 'send them on a mission under His authority' {apostello}
out of the region {the demons liked it where they were}.

11~~And there kept on being on the mountain,
a great herd of swine/pigs feeding.

12~~And all the demons asked Him {Jesus},
"Send us into the swine/pigs.

Let us go with a purpose {eiserchomai} into them
  {they wanted to stay in the area}."

13~~He {Jesus} gave them permission.

So the unclean spirits went out and entered into the swine/pigs.

The herd rushed violently over the cliff into the sea,
and about two thousand were drowned in the sea.

14~~Now those tending the pigs ran off
and reported the message {anaggello}
this in the town and countryside,
and the people went out with a purpose {exerchomai}
to see what had come to be {ginomai}.

{Demon Possession is One Reason for Some Forms of Psychosis}
15~~They came to Jesus
and discerned {theoreo} the demon-possessed man,
the one who had the legion,
constantly sitting {relaxed}, clothed
and in sound mind {sanity},
and they were afraid
  {hypocrisy of society - not thankful -
  just thinking that He ruined their bootlegging business}.

16~~Those who understood {oida}
what had happened to the demon-possessed man
fully recounted {diegeomai} it
and they also told about the pigs.

17`` Then they begged Jesus to leave their region.

18`` As He {Jesus} was stepping into the boat
the man who had been demon-possessed
asked/begged if he could go with Him.

19``But He absolutely did not {ouk} permit him.

Instead, He said to him,
"Withdraw from here and go home
face to face with yours {your people - family and friends}
and deliver the message {anaggello - an order} them
what sort of things
the Lord has done for you
and that He had mercy on you."

20~~So he {the now cleansed man}
went with a purpose {aperchomai}
and began to preach
in the Decapolis {means the 'ten cities'}
what Jesus had done for him,
and all were amazed.

{Note: Decapolis refers to the track of land where there stood 10 cities. According to Pliny, these cities were: Damascus, Opoton, Philadelphia, Raphana, Scythopolis, Gadara, Hippondion, Pella, Galasa, and Canatha (Gill).}

{Restoration and Healing}
21`` When Jesus had crossed back
in a boat to the other side,
a large crowd gathered around Him,
and He kept on being next to the sea.

22`` And, behold {pay attention}
one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus,
came and when he perceived {oida} Him
he 'prostrated himself'/fell {pipto}
face to face with His {Jesus'} feet.

{Note: Oida means to perceive, become aware of and even to 'calculate mentally and come to a conclusion'. It means to 'see mentally' so to 'understand'.}

23``And, he kept on begging Him urgently,
"My little daughter is holding 'near death' {eschatos}.

At a point in time, come,
so that if you place Your hands on her
- maybe you will, maybe you will not -
she may be healed
and will live {zao}."

24``And, He {Jesus} went with a purpose {aperchomai}
with him, and a great crowd followed
and kept on pressing around Him on all sides.

25``And a certain woman,
having a 'issue with flowing blood'/hemorrhages
for twelve years,
kept on being there.

26`` And,
having endured a great deal under the care of many doctors
and having spent all that she had,
instead of getting better,
in contrast, to a greater degree, she grew worse.

27-28`` Having heard about Jesus,
she came up in the crowd Him
from the back and touched His cloak/tunic 28``
for she kept on saying,
"If only I myself touch His clothes
-maybe I will, maybe I will not -
I will be healed."

29`` And, immediately the spring of her blood
received drying up,
and she knew from experience {ginosko}
that she had received
- in the past with results that would continue forever -
healing from her affliction {mastix}.

30``And, Jesus,
having immediately 'greater knowledge' {epiginosko} in Himself
that power had gone out from Him with a purpose {exerchomai},
turned around in the crowd and said,
"Who touched My cloak/tunic?"

31``And, His students/disciples {mathetes}
kept on saying to Him,
"You are glancing at {blepo}
the crowd pressing against You
and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"

{Note: Mathetes means 'students who have accepted the authority of a teacher'. They are learning from Jesus. They are not by any means mature believers even by the end of Jesus' three year ministry. But, by continual study, most become very mature believers by the end of their lives. Here they are thinking 'human viewpoint'. They are missing the divine viewpoint that there is 'meaningless touching' and 'touching with great spiritual importance' - the difference is the though and intent of the heart/'right lobe'.}

32``And He {Jesus} glanced around {periblepo}
to perceive/'mentally understand' {oida}
the one having done this at a point in time.

33`` Now the woman, receiving fear
and having dread {trembling},
perceiving/'having inherent knowledge' {oida}
what had happened to her,
came and 'prostrated herself'/fell down
before Him and told Him the whole truth.

34``But, He said to her,
"Daughter {thugater},
your faith has healed you.

Go in 'inner happiness'/peace {eirene}
and be 'restored to health'
from your affliction/disease {mastix}."

{Note: Thugater is a relationship word. Jesus was recognizing that she is a member of His family - saved by her faith in Him.}

{Change of Scene}
35``At the same time {eti - change of scene}
as he was teaching/'declaring His thoughts' {laleo},
there came from {the household of} the ruler
of the synagogue saying,
"Your daughter has died {apothnesko}.

Why trouble the Teacher/Master {didaskalos} any longer?"

{Note: Apothnesko means to 'die from the ultimate source of yourself' - strong word for 'dead dead'.}

{Note: Didaskalos - means a person who teaches with authority in a classroom setting. Not one to one teaching, but is used for a knowledgeable person teaching a group.}

36``But immediately, Jesus,
having heard what was said/taught {laleo},
said {lego} to the synagogue ruler,
"Do not {me} be afraid, only believe."

37``And, He {Jesus}
did not permit anyone follow Him
except Peter, James,
and John, the brother of James.

38``And, He came to the house of the synagogue ruler,
having people weeping
and wailing loudly {mourning without restraint},
and He perceived and understood {theoreo} the noisy confusion.

39``And having come in with a purpose {eiserchomai},
He said {lego} to them,
"Why are you receiving distress
and 'weeping without restraint' {klaio}?
The little one {paidion} is absolutely not {ouk} dead {apothnesko}
but, in contrast, sleeping {katheudo}."

40`` And, they kept on 'laughing in scorn' {katagelao} at Him.

But, having thrown out every one of them,
He received to Himself
the father and mother of the little one {paidion}
and His own companions
and entered into {eisporeuomai}
{the room} where the little one kept on lying {anakeimai}.

41``And, having taken the little one's hand,
He said to her, "Talitha cum,"
which keeps on being interpreted, "Girl {korasion},
I say {lego} to you, rise yourself up {egeiro}."

42``And, immediately, the girl {korasion}
rose up {anistemi} and kept on walking
(for she was twelve years old).

They were astounded/'beside themselves' {existemi}
with a great astonishment/ecstasy {ekstasis}.

{Note: Anistemi means to rise up. It was also the word used for a resurrection. But this is not a resurrection. This is resuscitation. The difference being that this child will die physically again. Jesus was the 'first-fruits' . . . the first resurrection from the dead never to die again.}

43``He {Jesus} 'strictly ordered' {diastellomai} them all
that no one should 'know by study or experience' {ginosko}
about this.
And said {lego} to them
she should receive something to eat.

{Note: This is interesting here. Jesus knows the perfect timing of God the Father's plan. He inherently knows that the time is not right for the revealing of His Works. So, He commands them to not spread the word about His miracle here. Then, He turns to a very practical matter - this child has not nourished her physical body for days, so she must be hungry!}
