Mark
Chapter
6
6:1``And,
He {Jesus} went out from there
and
comes to His hometown {Nazareth - where He grew up},
and
His students/disciples 'follow as students' {akoloutheo} with Him.
6:2``And,
when the Sabbath had come,
He
{Jesus} began to be teaching in the synagogue.
And
the many hearing,
were
completely flabbergasted/amazed, saying,
"From
where does this one get theses things?
And
what wisdom {sophia - bible doctrine metabolized into the soul}
is
this which has been given to the fellow?
Even
such great exhibitions of powers {dunamis}
take
place through the medium of His hands?
6:3``Is
absolutely not {ouk} this {Jesus} the carpenter?
The
son of Mary and brother of James, Joses/'Joseph Jr.',
Judas/Jude,
and Simon?
And
absolutely aren't {ouk} His sisters here with us?"
And
they saw in Him that of which they disapproved
and
which kept them from acknowledging Him.
6:4``And
Jesus was saying to them,
"A
prophet is absolutely not {ouk} without honor . . .
except
in his own country/hometown . . .
and
among his own kinfolk/relatives . . .
and
in his own house."
6:5``
And, He {Jesus} 'was absolutely {ouk} not able'/
'did
not have the power' {dunamai}
to
do even one 'work of power' {dunamis} there,
except
that He laid His hands on a few sickly ones and healed them.
6:6``And
He {Jesus} marveled because of their unbelief.
And,
He kept going around the villages
in
the encircling country . . . teaching.
6:7``And
He {Jesus} calls to Himself {proskaleomai} the Twelve.
And
He began to be sending them 'forth on a mission
under
His authority'/'as His ambassadors' {apostello}
sending
them forth two by two.
And,
He kept on giving them authority {exousia}
over
the unclean spirits.
6:8-9``And
He {Jesus} commanded them
not
to be taking even one thing
for
the road except only a 'walking stick'/staff . . .
not
bread, nor wallet/"traveler's bag",
nor
money in their belts . . . 6:9``
but
wear sandals and
not
to clothe themselves
with
two undergarments/tunics {chiton}
{take only the one you are wearing}.
6:10-11``And
He {Jesus} kept on saying to them,
"In
whose home you may enter,
'be
remaining'/stay there {an order}
until
you go out from there. 6:11``
And,
whatever place does not welcome you nor hear you,
when
you are going on your journey out from there,
shake
off the dust that is under your feet . . .
as
a testimony against them."
{Note:
The phrase about Sodom and Gomorrah is not at this point in the best
original manuscripts.}
6:12-13``And,
having gone out,
they
'made a proclamation'/preached/heralded {kerusso}
to
the effect that they should be repenting/
'be
mentally changing their minds
about
past sinful behavior' {metanoeo}. 6:13``
And
demons, many of them, they were casting
and
they were anointing with oil many who were sick
and
were healing them.
6:14``And,
the king, Herod, heard,
for
His {Jesus'} name/reputation became known,
and
they were saying that John the Baptizer/Baptist
has
been raised out from among those who were dead,
and,
because of this,
the
powers {dunamis} are energized/operative/'at work' {energeo}
in
Him."
6:15``But
others of the same category {alla} kept on saying,
"He
is Elijah."
Others
of the same category {alla} were saying,
"He
{Jesus} is a prophet . . .
like
one of the prophets {from the past}."
6:16``But
Herod, having heard, kept on saying,
"Him
. . . whom I beheaded . . . John . . . has been raised."
6:17-18``For
this, Herod himself, having commissioned/
'sent
on a mission under his authority' {apostello} men,
apprehended
John . . .
and
bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias . . .
his
brother Philip's wife . . . 6:18``
for
John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful
for
you to be having {sexually} the wife of your brother.
6:19-20``
So Herodias nursed a grudge against him {John}
and
wanted to kill him.
But
she kept on absolutely 'not able {ouk}'/
'not
having the power' {dunamai} 6:20``
because
Herod 'stood in awe of'/
'was
in a constant state of fearing' {phobeo} John . . .
knowing
him {John} to be
a
man . . . righteous/just {dikaios} and holy {hagios};
and
he {Herod} kept him {John} constantly out of harm's way,
and,
having heard him {John},
he
{Herod} was 'in a continual state of perplexity'/
'thoroughly
baffled';
yet
he {Herod} was in the habit of hearing him {John} with pleasure.
6:21``And
a 'day of opportunity'/strategic day' {eukairos hemera} having come,
when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday
for
his 'court officials'/'great men',
and
his military commanders,
and
the 'chief men'/leaders of Galilee.
