Mark

Chapter 9
9:1`` And He {Jesus continues talking}
said to them, "'Point of doctrine'/'I tell you the truth' {amen},
there keep on being some standing here
who will absolutely not {ouk} taste death
until they see the kingdom of God
having come with power {dunamis}."

{Note: This verse will be explained in the following verses. Three disciples will see Jesus Christ as He will be in His resurrection body on the Mount of Transfiguration.}

{The Transfiguration}
9:2-3`` Now after six days,
Jesus took out {paralambano} with him
Peter, James, and John
and led them alone up a high mountain privately.

He was transfigured/metamorphosized
  {metamorphoo - to change from one thing into another}
before them, 9:3~~
and His clothes
having become radiantly/glistening/shining {stilbo}
white beyond measure,
more than absolutely no {ouk} launderer { gnapheus}
on earth had the power to whiten {leukaino} them.

{Note: See also Matthew 16:27 and following for another coverage of this event. The six days are analogous to the first 6 years of the tribulation. And, taking the 3 disciples with Him is analogous to the Jewish remnant alive on the earth at the 2nd Advent.}

{Note: This mountain is probably Mt. Tabor in the Herman range since it was in the vicinity of Caesarea-Philippi, where our Lord was ministering.}

9:4``There also appeared before them Elijah and Moses,
  {from this, RBT theorizes that Elijah and Moses will also be the
  two unidentified witnesses who return to earth during the
  Tribulation},
having kept on talking with Jesus.

9:5`` Then Peter 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} to Jesus,
"Rabbi/Master/Teacher/'My honorable Sir' {rhabbi},
it keeps on being 'good of intrinsic value' { kalos}
for us to be here.

'Let me'/'I desire to' make three tents/shelters/tabernacles {skene},
one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

9:6`` (For he 'never ever knew'
  {oida - Pluperfect completed action in the past}
what to say . . . for they kept on being 'stricken with fear' {ekphobos}.)

9:7`` Then became a cloud
  {ginomai - to become what is was not before}
having surrounded them,
and a Voice came from the cloud, saying
"This keeps on being My beloved {agapetos} Son {huios}.

Listen to him! {akouo - imperative mood - an order}"

{Note: In Matthew 17:5 we see that Peter was cut off here as he was speaking. If Mark was actually transcribing for Peter, who may be the true author of the book of Mark, this could explain why Peter left out this fact!}

9:8``And, suddenly {exapina} having looked all around {periblepo},
they saw no one with them any more,
except Jesus only was with them.

9:9`` And {after} they, having coming down from the mountain,
He {diastellomai} gave orders {diastellomai} to them
not to tell {diegeomai} anyone what they had seen
until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

 9:10``They kept this word/statement to themselves,
having discussed/disputed/questioned {suzeteo} with themselves
what this rising from the dead kept on meaning.

9:11``Then they 'interrogated'/
'asked a request for information from' {eperotao} Him,
"Why do the 'experts in the law'/scribes {grammateus}
say that Elijah must come first?"

{Note: A 'grammateus' in the Bible (per the Blueletterbible), was a man learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings, an interpreter, teacher. Scribes examined the more difficult and subtle questions of the law; added to the Mosaic law decisions of various kinds thought to elucidate its meaning and scope, and did this to the detriment of religion. Since the advice of men skilled in the law was needed in the examination in the causes and the solution of the difficult questions, they were enrolled in the Sanhedrin; and are mentioned in connection with the priests and elders of the people.}

9:12``And, He {Jesus}'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} and said to them,
"Elijah does indeed come first
to 'restore to its former state' {apokathistemi} all.
  {the client nation Israel will be gathered in Jerusalem in the
  Tribulation}

 {Note: More evidence that Elijah is one of the two prophesized witnesses of the Tribulation.}

And 'in what way'/why is it written that the Son of Man
must suffer many things
and be despised/'treated with contempt' {exoudenoo}?

9:13`` Nevertheless {alla},
I {Jesus} tell you that Elijah has come,
and they did to him whatever they wanted {thelo},
just as it is written about him."

{The Disciples' Failure to Heal}
9:14`` And, when they came to the disciples,
they saw a great crowd around them
and 'experts in the law'/scribes
having discussed/disputed/questioned {suzeteo} with them.

9:15`` And, when 'the whole crowd'/'all the people' saw Him,
they were immediately 'struck with terror/amazement {ekthambeo}
having ran and greeted/welcomed Him.

9:16`` He {Jesus} interrogated {eperotao}
the 'experts in the law'/scribes,
"What are you discussed/disputed/questioned {suzeteo}
about with them?"

9:17`` One of the crowd 'had an answer' {apokrinomai} for him,
"Teacher/Master/'Honorable Sir {didaskalos},
I brought you my son {huios},
having been possessed by a spirit {pneuma}
that makes him mute/'unable to speak' {alalos}."

9:18`` "Whenever it seizes/over-takes {katalambano} him,
it convulses him
  {rhegnumi - makes one roll on the ground in convulsions - similar to
  an epilepsy fit},
and he 'foams {at the mouth}' {aphrizo}, grinds his teeth,
and 'wastes away'/withers {xeraino}.

I asked your disciples to cast it out,
but they were not able to do it."

9:19`` He {Jesus} 'had an answer for them' {apokrinomai },
"You unbelieving/faithless {apistos} generation {genea}!

How much longer will I be with you?

How much longer will I endure/sustain {anechomai} you?

Bring him to me."

9:20`` So they brought him {the boy} to Him {Jesus}.

When the spirit saw Him,
it immediately 'threw the boy into a convulsion' {sparasso}.

He fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming {at the mouth}.

9:21`` He {Jesus} asked his {the boy's} father,
"How long has this been happening to him?"

And he said, "From childhood {paidiothen}.

9:22`` "It has often thrown him into fire or water to destroy him.

But if You {ei tis} 'are able'/'have the power' {dunamai}
to do anything
- and You are able -
  {1st class conditional - no doubt - this man is a believer}
have compassion on us and help us."

9:23``Then Jesus said to him,
"'If you believe
- and you do believe {ei - 1st class conditional if} -
all things are possible {dunatos} for the one who believes."

9:24``Immediately, the father of the boy
cried out and said, "I believe!

You help my 'weakness of doctrine/faith/pistis'
  {apistia - imperative mood - a command ('a' is an alpha negative of
  'pistis' - pistis means faith or in the passive tense - 'that which is
  believed'/doctrine}!"

9:25``Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering,
He rebuked/admonished the unclean spirit {akathartos pneuma},
saying to it, "Mute and deaf spirit,
I {Jesus} command you, come out of him
and enter into him no more."

{Note: Jesus waited for the crowd to gather because the purpose of His miracles was to evangelize. Miracles were the 'calling card' that the Messiah had arrived. He would have cured all disease and removed all demons if that was the purpose for His miracles.}

9:26`` And having cried out and convulsing him severely,
it came out.

He {the boy} became like a corpse, so that many said, "He is dead."

9:27``But Jesus, having taken him by the hand, lifted him,
and he {the boy} stood/rose up {anistemi}.

9:28`` Then, having gone into the house,
His disciples asked/interrogated Him privately,
"Why 'couldn't we'/'did we absolutely not {ouk} have the power'
to cast it out?"

9:29`` He said to them,
"This kind/type {of unclean spirit} {genos}
can come out only by prayer."
