Mark

Chapter 8
8:1-2``In those days again,
being a great crowd,
and they not having anything to eat,
having called His {Jesus'} students/disciples to Him.
He says to them, 8:2``
" 'I have been moved with compassion' {splagchnizomai}
on the crowd . . . because now for three days
they are staying with Me
and they absolutely do not {ouk} have anything to eat. 8:3``
And, if {ean} I would send them home hungry
-maybe I would, maybe I would not {3rd class conditional if} -
they will faint on the way."

{Note: The better manuscripts do not include the phrase, "and some of them have come from a great distance."}

8:4``And, His {Jesus'} students/disciples
'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of themselves to' {apokrinomai} Him,
"How can it be that anyone will be able to satisfy these
with loaves of bread here in the wilderness/'uninhabited place'?"

8:5``And, He {Jesus} went to asking them,
"How many loaves of bread to you have?"
And they say, "Seven."

8:6``And, He {Jesus} commanded the crowd
to recline on the ground.

And, having taken the seven loaves of bread,
having given thanks,
He broke and kept on giving them to His students/disciples to serve.

And, they served the crowd.

8:7``And they had a few little fish.

And, having prayed that God might bless them to their intended use,
He said to set these before them also.

8:8``And, they ate and were satisfied.

And they took up that which was left over . . .
of broken pieces . . . seven baskets.

8:9``And, there were about four thousand.

And He {Jesus} sent them away.

8:10-11``And immediately,
having gone on board the boat with His students/disciples,
He {Jesus} came into the region of Dalmanutha. 8:11``

And there came out the Pharisees
and began to argue/dispute {suzeteo} with Him {Jesus} . . .
seeking from Him 'a sign'/'an attesting miracle' {semeion}
from heaven . . .
putting Him to the test {peirazo}.

8:12``And, having groaned deeply in His spirit He {Jesus} says,
"Why is this generation/'era of men' {genea} seeking a sign?

'I tell you the truth'/'Positively. I am saying to you' . . .
"There shall no sign be given this generation {genea}."

8:13-14``And, having sent them away,
again having embarked, He {Jesus} went off to the other side.8:14``

And they had completely forgotten to take loaves of bread.

And, except for one loaf,
they did not have any with them in the boat.

8:15``And He {Jesus} kept on admonishing them {diastellomai}
saying, "Constantly be keeping a discerning mind's eye upon
and ever be on the lookout for the leaven/yeast of the Pharisees
and the leaven/yeast of Herodians!"

{Note: Wuest says that leaven speaks of malice and wickedness as contrasted to sincerity and truth.}

8:16``And they kept on discussing among themselves {dialogizomai}
saying, {it is} 'because we have absolutely no {ouk} bread'/
'about having no bread'.

8:17``And having come to know {ginosko},
He {Jesus} says to them,
"Why are you 'arguing about having absolutely no {ouk} bread?'?'

Do you still not perceive {noeo}
nor understand/'put it together' {suniemi}?

In a settled state of hardness, do you have your hearts/'right lobes'?

8:18-19``Having eyes, you are absolutely not {ouk} seeing . . .
and having ears . . . you are absolutely not {ouk} hearing . . .
and you are absolutely not {ouk} remembering . . . 8:19``
when the five loaves I {Jesus} broke for the five thousand . . .
how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?"

They say to Him, "Twelve."

8:20`` "When the seven among four thousand . . .
how many baskets of broken pieces did you pick up?"

And, they say, "Seven."

8:21``And, He {Jesus} kept on repeating to them,
"Do you still absolutely not {ouk}
understand/'put it together' {suniemi}?"
  {idiom: literally 'absolutely not yet are you understanding/'putting
  it together?'}

{SideNote: Jesus also offers teachers of the Word the methodology. Repetition. He repeats and repeats and repeats until they not only understand, but they can not forget! That is called inculcation. These students are interested in learning, but it is not coming easy to them - same as it will be to anyone else who seriously studies the Word.}

8:22``And, they come into Bethsaida.

And they bring to Him {Jesus}
a blind man and they beg Him to touch him.

8:23``And, having taken the hand of the blind man,
He {Jesus} brought him outside of the village
and having spit upon his eyes . . .
having placed His hands on him,
He kept on interrogating { eperotao} him,
"If {ei tis} and it is true -
you ought to see/glance {blepo}."

8:24``And, having glanced up {anablepo}
  {the picture here is a man glancing up quickly - blinking from the
  light}
he kept on saying, "I see {blepo} men . . .
as trees I 'have a panoramic view' {horao} . . . of them walking."

8:25``Then again, He {Jesus} placed His hands on the man's eyes
and he {the formerly blind man} looked steadfastly
and was restored to his former state . . .
and he was looking at {emblepo} all things
'at a distance and clearly' {telaugos}.

8:26``And, He {Jesus} sent him off to his home, saying,
"Do not go into the village."
  {idiom: literally 'neither into the town go' - some texts add 'nor tell
  anyone' which makes sense but is not in the best original texts}

8:27``And He went out . . . Jesus and His students/disciples also
into the villages of Caesarea Philippi.

And along the road, He interrogated {eperotao}
His students/disciples, "Who do men/people say that I am?"

 8:28``And, they 'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of themselves to' {apokrinomai} Him, saying,
"John the Baptist/Baptizer . . .
and others of the same kind {allos} . . . {say} Elijah . . .
and others of the same kind {allos}. . . {say} one of the prophets."

8:29``And, He, Himself, kept on asking them,
"But, as for you . . . who are you saying that I am?"

'Having an answer for Him'/'Giving a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself to Him' {apokrinomai},
Peter says to Him, "You are the Messiah/
Christ/'Anointed One of God' {Christos}."

{Note: The Old Testament proclaimed that God would send His Anointed One - the Messiah in the Hebrew. In the Greek, the same word is Christos. SideNote: Jesus is the Greek version of Joshua - they mean 'God Saves' or 'Savior'. And, Lord means 'ruler of a specific area but not the ultimate ruler (that is basileia). Constantly, we see that Jesus Christ was sent on a specific mission by the One Whose authority He accepts - we call Him - God the Father. He is the Father in the sense that He is the member of the Godhead Whose plan the other members of the Godhead agreed to follow. The deity of Jesus Christ agreed to 'humble' Himself to the point of taking the outward appearance of a man. His deity was not diminished in the least, but He voluntarily set aside the attributes of His own deity in order to prototype the Way of the Church Age believer - utilizing the indwelling power of God the Holy Spirit in His 'Way of Life' - Walking in the More Excellent Way of Jesus Christ.}

8:30``And, He {Jesus} strictly charged them
that they should absolutely not tell even one person concerning Him
  {concerning Him being the Messiah - the time is not yet right for
  Him to disclose Who He Is}.

8:31``And He {Jesus} began . . . to be teaching them
that it was necessary in the nature of the case
for the 'Son of Man' to suffer many things . . .
and, after having been
'put to the test for the purpose of being approved'
to be rejected by the elders . . .
and the chief priests
and the scribes/'experts in the law' . . .
and to be killed/'put to death' . . .
and after three days . . . to rise again {anistemi}.

{Note: Archomai means 'to make a beginning' or 'to begin'. It appears that this is the first time the Teacher is fully explaining to His students about all that it means to be 'The Christos'. Paul tells us that many 'mystery doctrines' of the Church Age were revealed to Him. This may explain why these men who will become SuperGrace believers make so many mistakes in the gospels. Like all 'mature believers' - at some point, they have to be taught and they have to learn!}

8:32``And, with utter plainness of speech . . .
He {Jesus} was speaking the Word.

And, having taken Him aside,
Peter began to be rebuking/chiding/
'censoring severely' {epitimao} Him.

{Note: Peter was a big and loud and forceful man. As He was a student, he often was found talking before thinking it through.}

8:33``But having wheeled around
and having looked on His students/disciples,
He {Jesus} rebuked/chided/'censored severely' {epitimao} Peter
and says, "Get behind me, Satan . . .
because you do not have a mind for the things of God . . .
but for the things of men."

{Note: Peter took the Lord aside, but the others must have heard what he was saying. By bringing up Satan, Jesus is probably referring back to the temptations of Satan to have the kingdom without going to the cross. Peter loved the Lord and was probably telling Him to use His power and take the crown now and forget the cross. This was the same type of temptation Satan gave to Him. And, sometimes a temptation from a loved one is more difficult to resist! So, here Jesus is telling us that NOTHING . . . not even His own suffering . . . can come before God and His plan. He MUST go to the cross or no human ever would have salvation. Had Jesus bypassed the cross, then Peter would have been condemned forever and ever - as would all of us. ANYONE who is saved . . . was saved by that ONE WORK on the cross!}

8:34``And, having called the crowd
together with His disciples {mathetes},
to Himself, He {Jesus} then said to them,
"Whoever intends/desires to come after Me,
he must 'forget himself and his own self-interests' {aparneomai}
  {means he must replace his own 'human viewpoint' with the
  viewpoint of Jesus Christ via the intake of the Word and applying
  God's viewpoints to his life's experiences}
and take up his cross/'upright stick' {stauros}
and 'follow as a student of' Me {akoloutheo}.

{Note: Paul says we are to imitate him . . . as he imitates Christ. In the Old Testament, the believer was told to 'walk in the righteous Way of God'. The New Testament believer is told that now we have 'The More Excellent Way of Jesus Christ'. Jesus' divine viewpoint is now available in complete written form. Believers who want to advance to the maximum of divine viewpoint/spiritual maturity must take in doctrine on a consistent basis - every day - and live every day as 'unto the Lord' - Walk as He Walked when He was on earth - intake and application of doctrine to life's experiences.}

35~~For whoever wishes/desires
to save his soul/life {psuche}
  {referring to the religious crowd using salvation by works -
  there is only one method of salvation and that is by FAITH}
shall lose it.

And whoever loses his soul/life {psuche}
for My sake . . . and the gospel's {sake} . . . shall save it
  {martyrs for the Lord - also a reference to the Tribulational
  martyrs)

36~~What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul/life?

37~~For what shall a man give in exchange for his soul {psuche}?

{Note: Only the Lamb without spot is worthy.}

38~~For whoever is ashamed {epaischunomai} of Me {Jesus Christ}
and My Doctrines/Words {logos}
in this adulterous/'unfaithful {to God}'
  {used here for 'unfaithful to God' - for false teaching of 'religion'}
and sinful generation
  {in particular RBT says this refers to the Tribulation} . . .
of him also . . . the 'Son of Man' will also be ashamed . . .
when He {Jesus} comes in the glory of His Father
and with His holy angels.
