Mark

Chapter 12

{The Parable of the Tenants}
12:1~~Then he {Jesus} began to speak to them in parables,
"A Man {God and the plan and integrity of God}
planted a vineyard
  {Israel as a client nation to God - see Isaiah 5:1-7}.

He put a wall/fence around it {Divine protection} . . .
dug a pit for the winepress {anticipation of production}
and built a watchtower {freedom through military victory/power}.

Then He rented it to tenant farmers {Jews of Israel}
and went on a journey."

12:2~~"At harvest time
He sent a slave/servant {Old Testament prophet}
to the tenants to collect His portion of the crop."

12:3~~"But those tenants seized him,
beat him and sent him away empty-handed."

12:4~~"He {God/Vineyard owner} sent another slave to them again.
This one they struck on the head and insulted/dishonored."

12:5~~"He sent another, and that one they killed.
This happened to many others,
some of whom were beaten, others killed."

12:6~~"He {God} had one left . . . a Son {Jesus Christ}
He loved very much.
Finally He sent Him to them saying,
'They will respect My Son.' "

12:7~~But those tenants said to one another,
'This is the heir.
Come, let us kill Him
and the inheritance will be ours.' "

{Note: This is a reference to the Jewish part of the physical death of the Lord Jesus Christ.}

12:8~~"So they seized Him, killed Him,
and threw His body out of the vineyard."

12:9~~"What then will the Owner of the vineyard do?
He will come and destroy those tenants
and give the vineyard to others
  {removal of Israel as the client nation to God - after giving them 40
  years to repent - now with Gentile nations}."

{Jesus tells them they are mixed up! They want the 2nd Advent without the 1st Advent}
12:10-11~~"Have you not read this scripture {Psalms 118:25}:
'The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone . . . 12:11~~
this is from the Lord and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

{Note: The palm branches are with the feast of the Tabernacle NOT the Passover. The Passover represented the cross . . . the Tabernacle feast represented the rule of Christ in the Millennium.}

12:12~~Now they wanted to arrest him (but they feared the crowd),
for they knew that He told this parable against them.
So they left Him and went away.

12:13`` And, they 'sent on a mission
under their authority' {apostello} face to face with Him . . .
certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians . . .
to snare/trap Him {Jesus}
in 'what He said'/"His Doctrines/Words {logos}".

12:14`` And, having come, they say to Him {Jesus},
"Teacher {didaskalos}, we perceive/know {oida}
that You are true {alethes}
and that You absolutely are not {ouk}
'obsequious to'/'fawning over' {melo} anyone,
for You absolutely do not {ouk}
pay regard to the outward appearance of men,
but upon the basis of the truth,
You are teaching the 'Way of God'.

It is permissible to give income/poll tax to Caesar . . .
or absolutely not {ouk}?

12:15``Shall we give or, shall we not give?
But He {Jesus} knowing their hypocrisy said to them,
"Why are you putting Me to the test {peirazo}?
Be bringing Me a denarius in order that I may see."

12:16``And, they brought.
And He {Jesus} says to them,
"Of whom is this likeness . . .
and whose inscription?"
And, they said to Him . . . "Caesar's."

12:17``And Jesus said to them,
"The things belonging to Caesar . . . pay off to Caesar,
and the things belonging to God . . . to God."
And they stood . . . marveling at Him.

12:18-23``And, there come Sadducees to Him {Jesus}
(that class which says there is not a resurrection)
and, they kept on questioning Him, saying, 12:19``
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
"If {ean} a brother of a certain man should die
- maybe he will, maybe he will not (3rd class condition} -
and should leave a wife and should not leave a child {teknon} . . .
his brother should take/marry the widow
and raise up seed for his brother."
  {this pertains to the law of posterity. Every 50 years the land
  reverts back to the family of the Exodus that God gave it to. But
  if the man dies without male heirs, then that branch of the family
  dies out - as does the land grant - this was a very serious matter
  to the Jews of this day} 12:20``
There were seven brothers.
And the first married/took a wife, and dying,
absolutely did not {ouk} leave seed. 12:21``
And, the second married/took her . . .
and he died not having left a seed.
And, the third likewise. 12:22``
And the seven absolutely did not {ouk} leave a seed.

Last of all the woman died also. 12:23``
In the resurrection {anastasis} . . . when they are raised,
of which of them shall she be the wife? . . .
for the seven had her as wife.

12:24-27`` Jesus 'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself to' {apokrinomai} them,
"Is it absolutely not {ouk} for this cause that you err . . .
namely, that you do not know the scriptures
nor even the power of God? 12:25``
For when they arise out from among the dead . . .
neither do they marry nor do they give in marriage . . .
but are like angels in heaven. 12:26``
But concerning the dead,
that they do not arise,
did you absolutely not {ouk} read in the book of Moses,
at the bush, how God spoke to him, saying,
'I am the God of Abraham,
and the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob'? 12:27``
He is absolutely not {ouk} the God of the dead . . . but of the living.
'You are badly misled'/'Greatly do you err."

12:28``And, having come,
one of the scribes/'experts in the law'
heard them debating/'questioning together' {suzeteo} . . .
perceiving/knowing {oida} that He {Jesus}
'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself to' {apokrinomai} them well,
interrogated {eperotao} Him,
"Which/'of what sort' is the 'most important commandment of all?"
  {idiom: literally 'first commandment of all'}

12:29-30`` Jesus 'had an answer for'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself to' {apokrinomai},
"The 'most important'/first is: 'Hear/Listen, O Israel,
the Lord our God is one Lord . . . 12:30``
and you shall love {agapao} the Lord your God
'out of'/with {ek} your whole heart/'right lobe'/'mentality' {kardia}. . .
and 'out of'/with {ek} your whole life/soul/'life force' {psuche},
and 'out of'/with {ek} your whole 'strength of mind'/
'Way of thinking' {dianoia} . . .
and 'out of'/with {ek} your whole ability/
strength/force/might {ischus}.' "

{Note: God must always be first in your life. You must love Him . . . fully - with all your very being.}

12:31``The second is this:
'You shall love {agapao} your neighbor as yourself.'
'Greater than these, another of the same kind {allos} commandment,
there is absolutely not {ouk}'/
'There is absolutely no {ouk} other of the same kind {allos}
commandment greater than these'."

12:32-33``The scribe/'expert in the law' said to Him {Jesus},
"Beautiful/Right/Well {kalos} Teacher {didaskalos},
truthfully You said, "He is One . . .
and there is not another of the same kind {allos}
except Him.' 12:33``
And 'to be loving {agapao} Him
'out of'/with {ek} your whole heart/'right lobe'/
'mentality of the soul' {kardia},
and 'out of'/with {ek} your whole understanding {sunesis},
and 'out of'/with {ek} your whole life/soul/'life force' {psuche},
and 'out of'/with {ek} your whole ability/
strength/force/might {ischus} . . .
and 'to be loving {agapao} your neighbor {plesion} as yourself'
is much more {important}
than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

12:34``And, Jesus, having perceived/seen {oida} him,
that he 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself' {apokrinomai}
intelligently/thoughtfully {nounechos},
He said to him, "You are absolutely not {ouk}
far from the kingdom of God."

After that no one dared interrogate Him {anything}.

12:35-37``And, 'having an answer'/'giving a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai},
Jesus was saying as He was teaching in the temple said,
"How is it that the scribes/'experts in the law'
say that the Messiah/Christ is David's son? 12:36``
David himself said . . . by the Holy Spirit {hagios pneuma},
'The Lord said to my Lord,
'Sit at My right hand,
until I put Your enemies under Your feet.' 12:37``
David himself calls him 'Lord' . . .
so how can he be his son?"

And the large crowd was listening to Him with delight.

12:38-40``And, in His teaching/doctrine {didache},
He {Jesus} was saying,
"Be constantly bewaring of the scribes/'experts in the law' . . .
who are fond of walking around in long robes
and {are fond} of salutations in the marketplaces, 12:39``
and {are fond of having}
the 'prominent seats'/'seats of honor' in the synagogues
and the 'places of honor'/'chief recliners'
at feasts/banquets . . . 12:40``
those who devour widows' property
and 'as a show'/'for a pretence' make long prayers . . .
these will receive a more severe condemnation/punishment."

12:41``And, having sat down opposite
the treasury/'offering box' {gazophulakion},
He {Jesus} was viewing with a discerning eye
how the crowd throws money into the 'temple treasury'/'offering box'.
And, many rich/wealthy people 'put in large sums'/'threw in much'.

12:42``And there came one, a widow, poverty-stricken.
She threw/put in two mites/'small copper coins' {lepton} . . .
'which are a farthing'/'worth less than a penny' {kodrantes}.

12:43-44``And, having called His disciples to him,
He {Jesus} said to them,
"Truly/'Point of doctrine' {amen} . . . I am saying to you,
this widow . . . and she . . . poverty-stricken . . .
threw in more than all those
who threw money into the treasury/'offering box' . . . 12:44``
for they all threw in out of the abundance . . .
but she, out of her poverty, threw in all, as much as she had . . .
the whole of her 'life's necessities' {bios - that which sustains life}. "
