Mark

Chapter 11
{1st Palm Sunday - with Quotes from Psalms 118 - Verses 1-9}
11:1-2~~ Now as they approached Jerusalem,
near Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives,
Jesus sent two of his disciples 11:2~~
and said to them,
"Go to the village ahead of you.

As soon as you enter it,
you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden.

Untie it and bring it here."

{Note: For centuries a colt was the sign of a king riding upon it.}

11:3~~"If anyone says to you,
'Why are you doing this?' say,
'The Lord needs it and will send it back here soon.'"

11:4~~So they went and found a colt tied at a door, outside in the street, and untied it.

11:5~~Some people standing there said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?"

11:6~~They replied as Jesus had told them, and the bystanders let them go.

11:7~~ Then they brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks on it, and He {Jesus} sat on it.

{Homage to the King - See also Psalms 118 and Revelation 7:9}
11:8~~Many spread their cloaks on the way
and others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

{Note: The cloaks made His ride easier over the cobblestones. Spreading the branches puts the feast of the tabernacle WITH the feast of Passover. This is a very unusual thing. The feast of the tabernacle portrayed the millennial reign of Christ - they want to bypass the cross. They want the 'crown' . . . NOW! The God of Israel . . . the Messiah/Christ . . . 'the Branch' that will come out of the stump of Jesse - the son of David - Isaiah 11:1 Jeremiah 23:5-6 Zechariah 3:8, Zechariah 6:12-13.}

11:9~~Both those who went ahead
and those who followed kept on shouting,
"Save us now {hosanna} please!

Blessed is the One . . . Who comes in the name of the Lord!

{Note: From Psalms 118:25 the KJV transliterated the Hebrew 'Hosanna' which means 'Save us now please'. BUT they are misquoting Psalms by leaving out the second half of each verse. They want deliverance from the Roman Empire now! Not eternal salvation.}

{Crying for the Crown without the Cross - 2nd Advent NOW, Skip the 1st Advent}
11:10~~Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!
Save us now please {hosanna} . . .
in the highest!"

{Note: This verse was not part of Psalms 118. It was added by the religious Jews who wanted the kingdom identified with the 2nd Advent, but wanted to skip the reference to the 1st Advent.}

11:11^^Then Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple.

And having given all things a comprehensive inspection,
since it was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.

{Verses 12-14: The Fig Tree}
11:12^^Now the next day,
they having come out of and away from Bethany,
He {Jesus} was hungry.

11:13^^And, having seen a fig tree a far way off having leaves,
He {Jesus} came, assuming that He would find something on it.

And, having come to it, He found not even one thing, except leaves.

For it was not the season for figs.

11:14^^ And, He {Jesus}'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} and said,
"May no one ever eat fruit from you hereafter forever."

And His disciples kept on hearing {His saying}.

{Note: The word answered is 'apokrinomai'. It is a compound
verb . . . a preposition from the ultimate source . . . giving a discerning answer based on knowledge. Krino means: 'to judge'. Krinomai means: 'to be discerning in an answer'. Thus, the full meaning of 'apokrinomai' is: "to give a discerning answer from the ultimate source of one's self."}

{Cleansing the Temple}
11:15-16^^And they come to Jerusalem.

And Jesus, having entered the temple,
began to be throwing out {ekballo}
those who were selling and buying in the temple {courts}.

And, 'turned over'/'threw down'{katastrepho}
the tables of the moneychangers
and the chairs of those selling doves, 16^^
and He was not permitting anyone
to carry merchandise through the temple {courts}.

11:17^^ Then He began to teach them and said,
"Does it not stand written,
'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'?

But, as for you, you have made it 'a den of robbers!'"

11:18^^The chief priests {Sadducees}
and the experts in the law/'sacred scriptures' heard
and they considered how
they could kill/'utterly destroy' {apollumi} Him,
for they were fearing Him
because the whole crowd was amazed by His teaching.

11:19^^When evening came, they went out of the city.

{The Withered Fig Tree}
11:20^^ In the morning as they passed by,
they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.

11:21^^And,being reminded, Peter says to Him,
"Rabbi, look! The fig tree You cursed has withered."

11:22-23^^And, Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} said to them,
"Be constantly having faith in God. 23^^

Point of doctrine/I tell you the truth,
if someone says to this mountain
-maybe they do say it, maybe they do not -
'Be lifted up and thrown in the sea,'
and does not doubt in his right lobe/heart
but believes that what he says will happen,
it will be done for him."

11:24^^"For this reason,
I {Jesus} tell you,
all things whatever you are praying and asking for,
be believing that you received them,
and they will be yours."

11:25^^"And whenever you are standing, praying,
forgive, if you have anything against a certain person,
in order that your Father Who is in heaven
may forgive you your trespasses."

{Note: Per Kenneth S. Wuest, verse 26 is not in the original.}

{The Authority of Jesus}
11:27-28~~And, they come again to Jerusalem.

And, when He {Jesus} was walking in the temple {courts},
the chief priests,
the experts in the law and the elders come to Him 11:28^^
and said, "By what sort of delegated authority
are you doing these things?

Or who gave you this authority to do these things?"

11:29-30^^ Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} to them,
"I will ask you concerning one point
and answer Me and I will tell you by what authority
I do these things . . . 11:30^^
John's baptism . . .
was it from heaven or from men?

Answer Me."

11:31-32^^And, they were reasoning with themselves, saying,
"If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say,
'Then why did you not believe him?' 32^^

But if we say, 'From men . . . ' "
  {all thinking the mob would kill them}
(they feared the crowd, for they all considered John to be truly a prophet).

11:33^^ So they 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of themselves' {apokrinomai}
and said to Jesus, "We do not know."

And Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} and said to them,
"Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."
