Mark

Chapter 1 (Continued)

1:21``And, going into Capernaum,
and immediately, on the Sabbath,
having gone into the synagogue,
He {Jesus} kept on teaching {didasko}.

1:22``And they kept on being astonished {ekplesso}
by His Doctrine/'Teaching {didache} . . .
for He was teaching them
  {didasko - periphrastic construction emphasizing action going on,
  continuous action}
like one Who possessed authority {exousia}
and absolutely not {ouk} like their scribes/'experts in the law'.

1:23-24``And there kept on being
a man in their synagogue with an 'unclean spirit'
  {akathartos pneuma - RBT says this refers to a fallen angel}
who cried out, 1:24``
"What do we {demons} have in common with you,
Jesus, the Nazarene?"
  {idiom: literally "What is there with reference to us . . . and with
  reference to you?', Wuest says the best texts do not include the
  phrase: 'Leave us alone'.}

You have come to destroy us.

I know Who you are . . . the Holy One of God!"

{Note: Here we learn that the fallen angels recognized that Jesus Christ was the Messiah - as did Satan in Matthew 21:37-39.}

1:25``But Jesus rebuked {epitimao} him
- the rebuke not resulting in any conviction of sin -
saying, " 'Shut your mouth'/Be quiet' and come out of him at once!"

{Note: Wuest says there are two words for 'rebuke' in the Greek. Epitimao means to give a 'rebuke to another failing to bring the offender to acknowledge his sins'. Where elegcho is another word for a 'rebuke which results in a conviction of sin and even confession of sin on the part of the offender' (like in John 8:46). Here epitimao is used because the fallen angels are incorrigible and do not change their minds.}

1:26``And, when the unclean spirit had torn him with convulsions,
he screeched and came out of him.

1:27``And, they were all amazed,
so that they kept on inquiring
and demanding of one another, saying "What is this?

'New doctrine/New teaching'/Fresh teaching' {didache} . . .
with authority {exousia}!

And the unclean spirits He {Jesus} commands/marshals {epitasso},
and they obey Him."

{Note: Epitasso is a military term meaning to command troops. Tasso means to 'draw up in order of battle'. Here we see that the Lord commands the fallen angels and they obey. They choose to follow Satan, but they must obey the Lord when He commands.}

1:28``And, there went out the report concerning Him {Jesus}
  {meaning the 'word spread quickly about Jesus and His miracles}
throughout the whole region around Galilee.

1:29``And, as soon as they left the synagogue
they went to the house of Simon {later called Peter}
and Andrew {Peter's brother},
with James and John {the sons of Zebedee}.

1:30``And Simon's mother-in-law had been down for some time
burning up with fever.

And, immediately, they speak to Him {Jesus} concerning her.

{Note: From this verse we learn that Simon Peter was married.}

1:31``And, having come, He {Jesus} lifter her up,
having taken hold of her hand.

And the fever left her,
and she went to serving {diakoneo} them.

1:32-33``And, evening having come,
when the sun had gone down,
they kept on carrying in a constant procession to Him {Jesus}
all those having ailments . . . demonized {daimonizomai} . . . 1:33``
and all the city was gathered together face to face with the door
  {all the crowd was watching - the purpose of Jesus' gift of all sorts
  of miracles was to get the attention of a crowd so they would
  give Him a hearing - 'miracles' was one of the 'calling cards' of the
  Messiah}

{Note: Demons have different abilities. Some control vocal cords. Others control the movements of their victims. But others cause the symptoms of disease to manifest. Jesus had the power to tell these demons to depart. And, Satan, in his great genius, now uses humans to 'counterfeit' the Lord's ability. He has a 'healer' come up and command the demon to leave. Since this human also does Satan's will, the demon leaves - giving the appearance of a healing. The spiritual gift of healing was a temporary spiritual gift that no longer operates in humans. Only God Himself heals if He so wills it.}

1:34``And, He headed many afflicted with various kinds of diseases
and demons, many of them, He {Jesus} 'drove out'/ejected
  {ekballo - the forceful word again used above for the Spirit
  'ejecting' Jesus out into the desert for the temptations of Satan}.

And, He absolutely would not {ouk} permit
the demons to be speaking . . .
because they knew Him.

{Note: The last phrase has to do with the perfect timing of God. The Messiah was to be revealed to all only at the proper time.}

1:35``And 'in the last watch of the night
between 3AM and 6 AM" {proi}
in the early part of the watch while it was still somewhat dark,
He {Jesus} arose and went out . . .
and went off into a deserted place
and was there praying.

1:36``And, Simon {Peter} and 'his companions'/'those with him'
'searched for Him'/'hunted Him out' {katadioko}.

{Note: Jesus went off by Himself to pray. Peter and others had to go search for Him. Probably with the objective of bringing Him back to Capernaum.}

1:37``And, they found/discovered {heurisko} Him, and said to Him,
"All {men} {pantes} are seeking You."

{Note: Pantes here means not merely the inhabitants of Capernaum, but 'all in the world'.}

1:38``And He says to them,
"Let us be going elsewhere,
into the 'surrounding villages'/'nearby country towns',
in order that I {Jesus} can preach there also.

For this purpose . . . I came out."

1:39``He came, preaching . . .
into their synagogues all over Galilee . . .
also casting out demons {daimonion}
  {again the purpose of the miracles is to draw a crowd
  for His teaching - the calling card of the Messiah}.

1:40``And there comes face to face with Him {Jesus}
a leper, 'begging Him for help' and kneeling, saying to Him,
"If {ean} You are willing {thelo - subjunctive tense}
-maybe You are willing, maybe You are not {3rd class condition} -
You have the power {dunamai} to cleanse me. "

1:41``And, 'having been moved with compassion' {splagchnizomai},
having stretched out His hand . . .
He {Jesus} touched him;
and He says to him,
" 'I am willing'/'I desire it'. Be cleansed at once."

{Note: By using splagchnizomai Mark brings out the personality of the humanity of Jesus. Jesus was deeply moved by the faith of this leper.}

1:42``And, immediately there left him completely the leprosy,
and he was cleansed.

1:43-44``And, sternly charging him,
He {Jesus} immediately 'sent him away'/'thrust him out' 1:44``
and says to him, "See to it that you say 'nothing to anyone'
  {medeis medeis - doubling is very strong literally is 'nothing to no
  one'}.

But go, show yourself to the priest,
and present that offering with reference to your cleansing
which Moses commanded . . .
for a testimony to them."

1:45``But, having gone out,
he {the former leper} began to constantly
'announce it publicly'/'proclaim in public'
a great deal and to be blazing abroad the account
and spread the story widely,
so that no longer was He {Jesus}
able to enter any town {openly} . . .
but stayed outside in uninhabited places.

Still they kept coming to Him from everywhere.
