Song of Solomon

Chapter 5
{Drunk with love}
[S]1~~ "I am come into my garden, my sister, my bride."

[S]~~"I have gathered my myrrh with my spice;
I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey."

{Note: S is saying he is a good lover with lots of experience}

[S]~~ "I have drunk my wine with my milk."

[DJ]~~ "Eat, O friends; drink yea, drink abundantly, O beloved."

{Note: DJ's go for S and want her to want him also -peer pressure}

[SW]2~~ "I sleep."

{Note: Mentioning myrrh makes SW daydream or sleep and recall an experience with SL and protects her from S's advances}

[SW]~~ "But my heart waketh." {idom for a dream}.

[SW remembering a time when SL came to her window late at night]~~"The voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying,
"Open to me, my sister, my love.
My dove. My undefiled.
For my head is filled with dew,
and my locks with the drops of the night.""

{NOte: It is wet outside and he is dripping standing at the window}

[SW]3~~ "I have put off my robe.
How shall I put it on?
  {what a big deal really!}
I have washed my feet.
  {entered the house permanently for the evening -
  she is making excuses not to go outside with her SL};
how shall I defile them?"

[SW]4~~ "My beloved put in his hand in the latch of the window. And my passions were moved for him."

{Note: She is turned on by him! But he rattled the window and respected her volition and left!}

[SW]5-6~~ "I rose up to open to my beloved;
and my hands dropped with myrrh {excited},
and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh,
upon the handles of the lock.
I opened to my beloved."

[SW]~~ "But my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone!
My soul failed {I screwed up!}.
When he spake, I sought him,
but I could not find him.
I called him, but he gave me no answer."

{Note: Initially, she stalled, didn't respond to him . . . so SL had left - so SW goes out into the dangerous night alone and is seen by a policeman who thinks she is a prostitute illegally wearing a veil.}

[SW]7~~ "The watchmen that went about the city found me,
they smote me {beat her}, they wounded me;
the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.

{Note: Principal - she suffered because she put off her Right Man!}

[SW turning to DJ's]8~~ "I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
if you find my beloved.
You tell him, that I am love sick!"

[DJ]9~~ "What is thy beloved more than another beloved,
O thou fairest among women?

{Note: The daughters of Jerusalem express their human viewpoint - they think "What is the difference between one attractive man and another -any port in a storm??".}

[DJ]~~"What is thy beloved more than another beloved,
that thou dost so charge us?

[SW describes her right man - in her mind he is different from all other men]10~~ "My beloved is white and tanned
  {so what? so do all the other shepherds},
the chiefest among ten thousand."

[SW]11~~ "His head is as the most fine gold,
his locks are bushy,
and black as a raven."
  {SL has a well shaped head and black hair}

[SW]12~~ "His eyes are as the eyes of doves
by the rivers of waters,
washed with milk, and fitly set."
  {idiom for beauty and symmetry}

[SW]13~~" His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers".
  {SL is naturally good smelling to her}

[SW]~~ "His lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh."
  {SL is a good kisser}

[SW]14~~"His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl."
  {beautiful hands to her}

[SW]~~ "His body is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires."
  {beautiful body}

[SW]15~~"His legs are as pillars of marble,
set upon sockets of fine gold."
  {SL has good legs also}

[SW]~~ "His face is as Lebanon,
excellent as the cedars".
  {impressive face - not necessarily handsome}

[SW]16~~"His mouth is most sweet."
  {she likes what he says}

[SW]~~ "Yea, he is altogether lovely.
This one is my beloved,
and this is my {love} friend,
O daughters of Jerusalem."

{Note: In reality, she has described a regular man - and he is different only because he is her right man!}
