Hebrews Chapter 2 {4 Paragraphs in the Chapter 2} {Prologue Verses 1-5 - Angelic conflict as a warning to the human race} 1~~'Because of this'/'for this cause' {prior chapter's doctrines} it is necessary {dei} for us to embrace/'pay more attention to' {prosecho} the things {Old Testament Doctrine} having been heard - to our advantage - lest at any time we might drift by them {nautical analogy to the 'port' of salvation - Jesus Christ}. {Note: 'Because of this' means: 1) Because Jesus Christ is the victor in the angelic conflict, and 2) Because the Old Testament documentation verifies this fact and Jesus Christ's superiority over all creation - angelic and man, and 3) Because the angels have been subordinated to believers in time.} {Note: 'Dei' is in the impersonal form to indicate logical necessity. It is a very unusual verb used in this form. KJV translated it 'ought' but 'it is necessary' brings out the logical necessity better.} {Note: Prosecho means 'to have and to hold face to face' which was used to describe a physical love-making situation so we can use 'embrace' or to 'pay more attention'.} {Note: This is the passing of the Doctrinal Baton from the Lord in the Garden . . . to Teaching Angels in the Old Testament times . . . to the Lord in His Incarnation . . . and then on to Apostles} {Long Conditional Clause - Protasis - Verse 2; Apodosis - Verse 3} 2-3~~ For if the doctrine/word having been communicated through the agency/channel of angels - and this is true - became reliable/permanent - and it was reliable and permanent - and every transgression/'violation {of the Mosaic Law}' and every 'act of negative volition'/'refusal to listen to doctrine'/disobedience received a just punishment - and they were justly punished - 3~~ by what means shall we {Jews in Jerusalem in 67 AD} escape {the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD and the lake of fire}, having disregarded the 'so great a salvation/deliverance' {rhetorical question followed by an ablative of comparison - in Greek is fantastic -means there is NOTHING comparable - never has been, never will be anything that compares to our salvation} which {kind of salvation} was at first communicated through the agency/channel of the Lord and was verified under the authoritative teaching of those {the Apostles} having heard {Him}? {Note: In the Exodus generation there were two human teachers of doctrine - Moses and Aaron. And, there were 2-3 million Jews. The slack was picked up by teaching angels who taught the word/doctrine to the Jews. They taught the 'shadow' - Shadow Christology and all the parts of the temple and the things in the temple spoke of Christ. The 'Mystery' of the Church Age was also a mystery to the teaching angels. Once the 'shadow' became reality, then positionally humans are higher than angels.} {Note: The Greek syntax indicates the writer received teaching under the Apostles so he was most likely not Paul . . . more likely Clement of Rome, Barnabas or Apollos}. {Grace warning to the Jews - 5th cycle of Discipline} 4~~The God confirming their witness by the additional testimony of both signs {national warning - large scale miracles} and wonders {small scale miracles to evangelize small groups} and by means of a variety of powers {Apostolic powers} and the distribution of {spiritual} gifts from the source of the Holy Spirit according to His {God the Holy Spirit} own {sovereign} will. {Ultimate triumph of Man in the Angelic Conflict} 5~~For He has not put under the authority of angels the coming civilization {inhabited Earth - the millennium in view} concerning which we communicate. {2 Adams and the Angelic Conflict - Verses 6-9} 6~~Moreover someone {David} in a certain place has intensely testified, saying, "Who is 'Homo sapiens' {mankind in its weakness} that You, Yourself {God}, remember him {Man fails and yet God remembers us}? Or a son of man {the offspring of Adam} that You, Yourself {God},  keep on coming to his aid?" 7~~"For a brief time, You {God} have made Him {Jesus} 'inferior to'/'a little lower than' the angels. You {God} have crowned Him {Jesus} with glory and honor which belongs to You." 8~~"You {God} have put all things in subjection under His {Jesus} feet {Psalms 8: 4-6}." For in subordinating the all things to Him {Jesus}, He {God the Father} omitted not one thing insubordinate to Him {everything is subordinate to Jesus in the Millennium}. But now {back to the Church Age/present time} we SEE NOT YET {horao} the all things having been subordinated to Him. {Note: In Psalms 8: 4, we see the word for 'mankind' is the Hebrew word for 'mankind in his weakness' instead of ' Eish - mankind viewed from his strength'.} {Note: 'Glory and honor' in the dative of possession means a 'personal interest' particularizes the point of ownership. The crown belongs to God and He gave both honor and glory to Adam. Adam was made the ruler of the Earth in the Garden until his fall.} {Note: Horao is the Greek word for seeing from a panoramic view of things . . . 'perception in the soul'. This is a believer with an Edification Complex of the Soul (ECS) or close to it. This believer is starting to 'see' what is important, but not quite. He still has a panoramic view of doctrine in his soul.} {Note: This verse says that all the time of the Church Age and the Tribulation there will be insubordination/rebellion (rejection of Christ) on the Earth. The Earth is currently under the authority of the ruler of the world - Satan. Then at the 2nd Advent, The All Things will ALL be subordinate to Christ on Earth and Christ will rule 1000 years on Earth.} 9~~ BUT {in contrast}, having been made 'inferior to'/'lower than' the angels for a brief time {incarnation of Christ} because of the suffering of {spiritual} death WE KEEP ON SEEING {blepo} Jesus and Only Jesus having been crowned with glory and honor for the purpose that by means of the GRACE from the God He {Jesus} should taste death 'on behalf of'/'as a substitute' for all {for every human being - Unlimited Atonement}. {Note: Blepo takes 'see' (horao) in verse 8 and goes farther to being really about to see something of importance - Jesus.} {Note: In Philippians 2:8 we learn that 'He HUMBLED Himself . . . to take an outward form of a human . . . to the point of spiritual death'. His Humanity was inferior to angels during the incarnation. In His resurrected body, He is now higher than angels are.} {Note: In the Greek, 'Glory and honor' are datives of possession. The syntax means 'personal interest is particularized to the point of ownership'. These characteristics belong to Deity. They were given by God to Jesus in His resurrected body - NOT ever to ANY angel is the point.} {Bride and the Angelic Conflict - Verses 10- 13} 10~~ For it was proper/fitting for Him {God} because of Whom the all things . . . and through Whom . . . the all things having lead to glory . . . many sons {Bride of Christ} to bring to the objective {completion}, through sufferings, the Prince-Leader {archegos - Jesus} of their salvation. {Note: God the Father is both the cause and the agent for the creation of the all things. In His Divine Plan, God the Son was the 'means of creation' (Colossians 1:16) and the 'means of salvation' (Acts 4:12). The Father as the originator of the Divine Plan is the originating source. Jesus Christ is the member of the Godhead Who actually created the universe and holds it together.} {Note: Archegos is the Greek word for a very high ranking leader. The Archegos is the One Who is next to the king in authority. In this case, it refers to a Prince Who is destined to be King.} {Jesus and the Bride - 2nd Advent and Session of Jesus in Heaven} 11-12~~For the One sanctifying {Jesus Christ} and the ones being sanctified {Believers in the Church Age} all from the source of One {God the Father}! For this reason, He {Jesus Christ} is NOT ASHAMED to introduce them as members of the family, 12~~saying {Psalms 22:22}, "I {David/Jesus} will proclaim Your {God the Father's} Personality/Name/Plan to My family - to their advantage. In the middle of the assembly/church will I sing praise to You {response of the Church to Jesus}." {Note: Psalm 22:22 has a double meaning. David wrote the Psalm and proclaimed it to his people . . . the assembly of Israel. But it also is prophetic of Jesus Christ at the right hand of the Father also saying this in heaven . . . and the Church/Bride of Christ responds to Jesus.} {Note: These verses are referring to Ultimate Sanctification. When Jesus Christ returns to the Earth at the 2nd Advent, He brings the Bride with Him. At this time, believers are in their resurrected bodies minus the Old Sin Nature and Human Good and Evil. Jesus is NOT ASHAMED of His Bride at this time.} {More Old Testament documentation - Isaiah 8: 17-18} 13~~And again {Isaiah 8:17}, "I will put my trust {faith} upon Him {Jesus Christ}". And again {Isaiah 8:18}, "See this/behold . . . I {Jesus} and the dear children {paidion} whom The God {God the Father} has given Me for a possession {the Bride of Christ given to Him by God the Father}." {Note: Paidion is the Greek word to describe 'children at their best' - 'dear children '. It refers here to believers.} {Epilog - Verses 14-17 - Hypostatic Union (God and Man in ONE)} 14~~Since, therefore, the dear children share {koinoneo} blood and flesh HE ALSO HIMSELF {Jesus Christ} in a unique manner and in the same manner, took hold of {metecho} the same {blood and flesh} in order that He, through {spiritual} death, might neutralize/'render powerless' the one having the ruling power of the {spiritual} death that keeps on being, the devil. {Note: In the Greek, 'koinoneo' means to 'share everything in common'. All mankind has is common blood, flesh, AND the sin of the father - the Old Sin nature. Jesus Christ was born outwardly a man, but is not categorized as 'koinoneo' because of the virgin birth -no Old Sin nature . . . so metecho meaning 'sharing in a unique way' is used instead. God the Second Person - Jesus Christ - had to become man . . . because mankind was created to resolve the angelic conflict.} {Scepter of the Devil - Spiritual Death - Jesus Christ set free believing mankind} 15~~And have released/set free {from Satan's kingdom} those persons, as many as, by means of fear from the source of {spiritual} death through ALL the functions of life kept on being held in slavery. {Note: The devil rules the Earth. But he does NOT rule anyone who has a relationship with God. He rules the spiritually dead of mankind.} {Note: ALL fear in the human race comes from the lack of a relationship with God - a lack of understanding of eternal security. If they really knew God, they would NOT know fear - sharing the happiness of God in ALL circumstances!} {Note: All unbelievers, no matter how great or low status in life, are in slavery in ALL functions of life!} 16~~ For {explanation} obviously, He {Jesus} Himself did not assumed the nature of angels, but, in contrast, He did assume the seed of Abraham {became a man and a Jew}. 17~~From which circumstance, He was obligated, according to the standard of all things, to be made like {to resemble} to the brethren {a human not an angel . . . and a Jew} for the purpose that He might become what He was not before a compassionate and faithful {consistent and stabile} high priest in the things, face to face, with the God to make propitiation {hilaskomai} for the sins of the people. {Note: The greatest celebrity in Israel was the High Priest - they originally had NO King. The people complained. They wanted a king by the people so they could be 'like other nations'. Saul was elected king. The WANTS of the people - to have a king. . . and the WANTS of God to have a High Priest as the top celebrity will meet in heaven! Jesus Christ is now OUR High Priest in heaven! - the ONLY celebrity in the Universe and the King of Kings - Lord of Lords!} {Note: Hilaskomai refers not to the reconciliation of sins here, but to the propitiation work of Jesus Christ on the cross. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross propitiated/satisfied the Righteousness and Justice of God.
