I
Samuel
Chapter
20
1~~And
David fled from Naioth in Ramah,
and
came and kept saying/wining before Jonathan
{operation crybaby - sign of David moving deeper into
reversionism},
"What
have I done?
What
is my iniquity?
And
what is my sin before your father,
that
he keeps on seeking my life?"
{operation bitterness - mental attitude sins - more evidence of
reversionism}
2~~And
he {Jonathan} said unto him {David},
"Definitely
not!
You
will not die!
Behold,
my father can do nothing
either
great {like death}
or
small {like even bothering David},
but
that he will show it me
and
why should my father hide
this
situation/word {dabar} from me?
It
is not so."
{Note:
Jonathan is a SuperGrace believer and realizes that David will not
die for a long time. He also assumes his father to be honorable and
could not believe his father would lie to him about killing David.}
3~~And
David 'took a solemn oath' moreover, and said,
"Your
father certainly knows
that
I have found grace in your eyes {strong category III friendship}
and
he {Saul} said,
'Let
not Jonathan know this,
lest
he be grieved.'
But
truly as Jehovah/God lives,
and
as your soul lives,
there
is no doubt . . . there is but a step between me and death
{this is the 'human viewpoint expressed by reversionists - no longer
is the 'Battle the Lords' - David now is 'afraid of death' - a very
great sign of reversionism}."
{Just
Tell Me What You Want Done - Great Friend}
4~~Then
said Jonathan unto David,
"What
your soul {nephesh} says,
so
I will do it."
5^~And
David said unto Jonathan,
"Behold,
tomorrow is the new moon,
and
I should not fail to sit with the king at dinner
but
let me go,
that
I may hide myself in the field
unto
the third day {day after the feast of the new moon}
to
the evening."
{Note:
The new moon occurred 12 times a year and was a special national
holiday in Israel. Animal sacrifices were offered and then a two to
three day feast occurred. This was worship and fellowship - See
Numbers 10:10 and 28:11. David would be expected to be at the feast
as one of King Saul's generals.}
{Reason
Given for David's Missing the Feast}
6^~"If
your father at all misses me, then say,
'David
earnestly asked leave of me
that
he might run to Bethlehem, his city,
for
there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.' "
{Note:
This is an example of a believer in reversionism (David) bringing
another believer down to his level - by asking him to lie for him.}
7^~If
he say thus, "It is well."
Your
servant shall have peace {David will be safe}.
But
if becoming angry, he gets very much angry
{charah charah - doubling of the verb is very strong}
then
know that evil/wickedness is planned {for me}.
8^~"Therefore
you shall 'manufacture grace' {'asah checed}
with
your servant.
For
you have caused your servant {David} to be brought
into
a covenant of the Lord with you.
Notwithstanding,
if there is guilt/iniquity {`avon} in me,
cause
me to be killed yourself
{David's human viewpoint in reversionism - there is no real grace in
this!}.
For
why should you bring me to your father?"
{Note:
This is true that David said this, but what he said is not true.
David does not need to rely on the grace generated by Jonathan
anymore then any of us do. We need to rely on the Grace of God for
all of our protection!}
9^~And
Jonathan said,
"Put
the thought out of your mind'
{idiom: literally 'Far be it from you'}
For
if I knew certainly that evil/wickedness
were
determined by my father to come upon you,
then
would not I tell it you?"
{Note:
Jonathan and his father Saul are close. If Saul was going to hurt
Jonathan's close friend, he is sure his father would have told him
this first! Jonathan is incorrect!}
10^~Then
said David to Jonathan {almost in a state of panic},
"Who
shall tell me {if you will not!}?
Or,
what if your father answers you
stubbornly/stupidly/'with
hard-heartedness' {qashah}?"
{Verses
11-15: Nobility of Jonathan}
11^~
And Jonathan said unto David,
"Come,
and let us go out into the field
{where no one can overhear them}."
And
they went out both of them into the field.
12^~And
Jonathan said unto David,
"O
Jehovah/God . . . 'Elohiym/Godhead of Israel
{meaning that Jonathan swears this solemn oath by God},
when
I have examined {chaqar} my father
about
tomorrow any time,
or
the third day,
and,
behold, if there be good toward David,
and
I then send not unto you and show it to you
{no news is good news}."
13^~"Jehovah/God
will manufacture much more to Jonathan.
But
if it pleases my father to do you harm/evil,
then
I will show it to you, and send you away,
that
you may go in peace
and
Jehovah/God be with you,
as
he has been with my father."
{Greatness
of Jonathan}
14^~"And
not only while I {Jonathan} live
you
will manufacture {'asah - out of grace}
the
grace of Jehovah/God,
that
I {Jonathan} die not."
{Note:
From the next verse, we see that this is still Jonathan speaking to
David saying he recognizes that David will be king instead of
himself. So, is saying to David, do not take the throne by killing
Jonathan or by implication by killing King Saul. Happiness is not
built on the unhappiness of others. So, David learns this lesson and
is later tempted to kill King Saul but he refuses to do so. So, God
can then promote David to king not David promoting himself. And, God
fully blesses David when the timing is His.}
{Jonathan
Recognizes the Future of the House of David}
15^~"But
also you {David}
will
not be caused to cut off your grace
from
my house forever {now this includes his father Saul}.
{it is never God's plan for David to be advanced over the misery of
another}
No,
not when Jehovah/God has caused to cut off
the
enemies of David
every
one from the face of the earth."
{Note:
God must do this for David to be promoted! And, He will.}
{Verses
16-17: Result of Grace Orientation}
16^~So
Jonathan made/cut {a covenant}
with
the house of David, saying,
"So
Jehovah/God seeks vengeance
from
the hand of the enemies of David."
{Note:
This phrase means the Lord will seek the destruction of David's
enemies but Jonathan will not be one of them. Jonathan takes a grace
stand with David even though he knows it will cost him the throne
(but later, he goes with his father Saul instead of being with David
and the result will be his death).}
17^~And
Jonathan caused David to add another solemn swear,
because
of his love to him.
For
he had loved him as he loved his own soul.
{Verses
18-23: Message of the Three Arrows}
18^~Then
Jonathan kept on saying to David,
"Tomorrow
is the new moon
and
you shall be missed,
because
your seat will be empty."
19^~"And
when you have stayed three days,
then
you will go down quickly,
and
come to the place where you did hide yourself
when
the business was in hand,
and
shall remain by the stone Ezel
{a giant rock that they both know}."
