Jeremiah
Chapter
20
{Verses
1-6: Opposition of Pashur}
1~~Now
Pashur {means prosperity 'all over the place'/'round about'}
the
son of Immer the priest,
who
was also chief governor {2nd in command in priestly order}
in
the house of Jehovah/God,
kept
hearing {from different sources of information}
that
Jeremiah prophesied these things
{that
Jeremiah had received from the Lord}.
{Note:
Pashur is second only to the High Priest. This makes him the
chairman of the National Counsel of Prophets and Priests. Very
influential man.}
2~~Then
Pashur caused/ordered
the
repeated beating of Jeremiah the prophet
{did not do it himself, and they kept on beating Jeremiah
to a pulp},
and
gave {what was left of} him
in
the 'torture harness that painfully twists the body' {mahpeketh}
that
were in the high gate of Benjamin
{temple gate - on public display},
which
was in the house of Jehovah/God.
{Note:
Jeremiah only remains in this torture device for one night. We do
not know what caused them to release Jeremiah the next day. Maybe the
King Zedekiah had him released or there were enough positive
believers that demanded his release. We not know.}
{God's
Sense of Humor - Don't Mess with a Servant of the Lord}
3~~And
it came to pass {indicating several causes} on the morrow,
that
Pashur caused/ordered Jeremiah
to
go forth out of the 'torturous twisting harness' {mahpeketh}.
Then
said Jeremiah unto him {Pashur},
"Jehovah/God
has not called your name
'Pashur'
{meaning 'prosperity all round'},
but
'Magormissabib' {meaning 'terror/fear/adversity all round' -
meaning 'you will never know another happy day'}."
4~~For
thus said Jehovah/God,
"Behold,
I am in the process of giving you {Magormissabib}
a
fear/terror to yourself and to all your friends {all his cronies also}.
And
they shall fall by the sword of their enemies,
and
your eyes shall behold it.
And
I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon,
and
he shall carry them captive into Babylon,
and
shall slay them with the sword."
5``
And, I will deliver all the wealth of this city,
and
all the riches thereof,
and
all the prized possessions thereof,
and
I will deliver all the treasures of the kings of Judah
will
I give into the hands of their enemies.
They
shall seize them as plunder,
and
carry them off to Babylon.
6``As
for you, Pashur, and all who live in your house -
you
shall go into captivity.
And
you shall come to Babylon,
and
there you shall die
and
there you shall be buried . . .
you,
and all your friends,
to
whom you have prophesied falsely.
{Verses
7-11: Opposition of Jeremiah's Congregation}
{Victory
of Category I Love}
7~~O
Jehovah/God, You have persuaded me,
and
I was constantly in a state of being deceived.
{Jeremiah had wrong illusions about the quality of his
congregation}.
You
{God}
1) 'hold me fast' {concept of eternal security}/
2) 'cleave to me'{category 1 love from God}/
3) 'make me strong' {strength through doctrine in his soul}/
4) 'restore me' {rebound technique}/
5) 'heal me' {his soul from emotional revolt/disappointment'}/
6) 'assist me'{Divine power for Jeremiah's ministry}/
7) 'establish me' {Only God promotes a communicator of the Word}
{chazaq - has seven meanings and all apply here}
therefore,
You {God} have constantly conquered.
I
'have become a source of laughter daily'/
'have
become a source of derision daily'
{Jeremiah teaches doctrine on a daily basis}.
Every
one is constantly making fun of me {laughing AT him}.
{Note:
Jeremiah's former friends and his congregation now laugh at this man
of God. The New Testament also tells us that in leaving the 'fast
crowd' they will be amazed you no longer want to join in their 'fun'!}
{Jeremiah's
Message that Caused the Laughter in Verse 7}
8~~For
as often as
I
'arranged in order to teach doctrine categorically' {dabar},
I
'disseminated exegetical information' {za`aq} . . .
I
kept on 'communicating dogmatically' {qara'} . . .
{about}
violent oppression and spoil/'wealth obtained by violence'
{subject of the message - 5th cycle of discipline looming near}.
Because
the Word of Jehovah/God
became
an 'object of scorn'/reproach unto me,
and
a 'permanent type of ridicule' {qelec}, daily
{people laughed at Jeremiah everywhere
he went for preaching God's Word}.
{Note:
Jeremiah's message was a harsh one. That the Jews left
God
. . . ignored/rejected His Word. They had a very powerful army and
powerful 'allies' in the Egyptians. They did not need God to protect
them! Jeremiah was a crazy old kook - preaching nonsense! Well that
is what they believed anyway!}
{Jeremiah's
Desire to Quit Prophesizing}
9~~Then
{in view of the negative volition and derision}
I
said {in a temporary set back for Jeremiah},
'I
will not remember Him {God},
nor
'arranged in order to teach doctrine categorically' {dabar}
any
more in His Name.
But
His Word was in my 'right lobe'/heart
as
a burning fire 'held back'/'shut up' in my bones,
and
I was weary with holding out,
and
I have been caused to be unable to stop {his teaching}!
{Triple
Opposition - Human Viewpoint, 4th Estate - News Media, and 'Friends'}
10~~For
I heard and concentrated on
the
defaming {dibbah} of many . . .
'
magowr cabiyb'/'fear on every side'
{see verse 3 - the new name for Pashur -
means he is behind the defaming of Jeremiah}.
"Report
. . . {say they and we will}
Report
it {people demanding news}."
{today they would say, "Come on Jerry What's New Today??? ha"}
Every
person of my friendship {his 'former' personal friends}
'kept
on watching'/'lies in wait' for my downfall
saying,
"Perhaps he will be enticed
{hoping Jerry would 'come back' to their viewpoint},
otherwise,
we shall prevail against him,
and
we shall seize our revenge/vengeance on him."
{Note:
His former friends in the fast crowd do not like Jerry's 'change of
heart' toward the Lord. They are just waiting for him to return to
their fun time sinning! And, then they can say, 'See I told you he
could not stay away! ha ha ha ha'}
{Note:
Dibbah is the word for 'defaming'. It has its origin in the 'dung of
pigeons' that is being spread on statues. That gives you a picture of
what they are doing to Jeremiah.}
{God's
Defense of the Ministry - Similar to Isaiah 54:17}
11~~
But Jehovah/God is with me
as
a Mighty Warrior/Hero using violence.
Therefore
the ones constantly persecuting me
shall
become weak/feeble/faint;
and
they shall not be victorious.
They
shall be extremely frustrated,
because
they have not acted wisely.
Their
perpetual ignominy/reproach
shall
never be disregarded/forgotten
{by God - they shall not take down Jeremiah}.
{Verses
12-18: Opposition of Jeremiah's Soul - Inner Conflict}
12~~But,
O Jehovah/God of the armies/hosts,
Who
tests the 'experiential righteous'
{tsaddiyq - same as dikiosune in the Greek},
and
sees the emotions/reins and the 'right lobe'/heart.
``Let
me see your 'divine judgment'/retribution on them.
As
I lay my case before you.
{Hebrew
Style - Solution First then Problem in 14 and following}
13~~Sing
unto the Jehovah/God {express happiness thru song},
praise
you Jehovah/God.
For
He has delivered/'snatched from danger' the soul
of
the distressed {Jeremiah himself}
from
the hand of wicked/evildoers.
{Note:
Jeremiah is saying this verse to himself for his deliverance by the
Lord. Deliverance from what, is coming up.}
{Jeremiah's
Emotional Revolt of the Soul - Cursing His Own Birth}
14~~
Constantly being cursed . . .
{be}
the day in which I intensely received birth!
Let
it not become a blessing,
the
day wherein my mother birthed me.
{Jeremiah's
Emotional Revolt of the Soul - Cursing A Man Doing a Good Deed}
15~~Constantly
being cursed . . . {be} the man
who
announced ecstatic/intensive good news to my father,
saying,
"You have sired a male child."
Causing
him ecstatically/intensively
extremely
happy {samach samach}.
{Note:
Samach means happiness. The doubling of the verb in the Hebrew means
it is extremely intensive.}
{Details
of Jeremiah's Emotional Revolt of the Soul}
16~~And
let that man {innocent family friend announcing his birth}
be
as the cities {reference to Sodom and Gomorrah}
which
Jehovah/God totally destroyed,
and
received 'no repentance'/'no sorrow about it'/
'no
changing of His Mind'.
And
let him hear the 'scream of someone in a disaster'
in
the morning {trauma is greater if it is observable},
''and
the battle shouts at noontime.
{Jeremiah
Imposes His Psychotic Condition of the Family Friend}
{What
Jeremiah says the Friend Should have Done to Him as a Baby!}
17~~Because
he {innocent family friend}
did
not slay {hack again and again} me {Jeremiah}
out
from the womb!
Or
that my mother might have been my grave
{means Jeremiah suggests the friend should have
killed his mother before he was born},
and
her womb pregnant with child forever
{never giving birth to Jeremiah}!
{Reason
why Jeremiah Wishes He was Not Born}
18~~Why
did I go forth out of the womb
to
experience misery and suffering/agony/pressure?
With
the result that my days
should
be wasted with ignominy and confusion!
{Note:
Emotion can not cope with suffering. Jeremiah is suffering and his
emotions are ruling him instead of his right lobe/heart!}
