John

Chapter 19 (Continued)
21~~Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate
"Stop writing 'King of the Jews'
  {probably wrote it twice and then they said this},
but instead 'that He said He kept on being King of the Jews'. "

{Note: The religious leaders take the truth - as written by Pilate - and want to twist it to their way of thinking. Religion always twists the Truth.}

22~~Pilate 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself' {apokrinomai}
"I have written it, and it will stand written that way - this is right, this is it!"
  {Idiom: Hebrew style doubling - what I have written I have written'}

{Note: Pilate had concluded from interrogation that Jesus was the King of the Jews!}

23~~Then the soldiers {the 4 regular Roman soldiers without the officer}
having crucified Him {Jesus}
seized His clothes {Jesus was well dressed with 5 valuable garments on Him}
and divided to each soldier a part {equal share - too valuable to cut up}
and his 'chiton'/undergarment
was without seam and woven
from the top throughout {of high quality construction}.

24~~They said therefore face to face {pros}
with the others of the same kind
  {allelon - the 4 solders discussed and agreed this}
"Let us not tear it {the well made chiton/undergarment}
but 'cast lots'/'roll the dice' for it -
whose shall it be."
For the purpose that the scripture might be fulfilled {pleroo} which said,
"They separated my garments and for my vesture
that casted lots."
These things therefore the soldiers did.

{Verses 25-27: Third Cry on the Cross}
25~~Now there stood immediately beside the cross of Jesus
  {pluperfect - dramatic - they were not going to be moved}
his mother {Mary - now widowed},
and His mother's sister - Mary
  {the wife of Cleophas - mother of James the little -
  and also a widow at this time}
and Mary Magdalene
  {Mary of the beautiful hair - a former prostitute and in Luke 7:37
  and 8:2 was demon possessed}.

26~~When Jesus therefore had a panoramic view of His mother,
and the disciple/student standing beside her
whom He loved {agapao - John himself},
He {Jesus} said unto His mother, "Woman, behold your son!"

27~~ Then He said to the disciple {John},
"Behold your mother!" {John is to provide and care for Mary}
And from that hour that disciple {John} took her unto his own {family}.

{Verses 28-29: Fifth Cry on the Cross (4th is in Matthew 27:46-47)}
28~~After this, Jesus
having inherent knowledge {oida}
that all things were now finished {teleo},
that the scripture might be fulfilled {teleioo} {Psalm 69:21},
said, "I thirst."

29~~Now there was placed a tub
a vessel full of 'cheap wine'/'rotgut' {oxos}
  {a sour cheap wine - a daily ration of the Roman soldiers}
and they filled a sponge with the 'cheap wine',
having been attached upon a stem/hyssop
  {stalk used to reach high to his mouth},
they brought . . . {it} to His mouth.

30~~At which time,
Jesus, having received the 'cheap wine'/'rotgut' {oxos},
said, 'Finished' {telelestai}
  {salvation work complete - spiritual death on the cross}.
And having pushed His head {and body} forward
  {a deliberate act on His part - brings attention to Levitical offerings in
  Leviticus Chapters 1-6},
He dismissed His spirit {now physical death also}.

{Note: Jesus was still alive when He said 'Finished'. It was separation from God - spiritual death that saves. Physical death, then occurred. Not recorded here He said, "Father into Your hands, I dismiss My spirit. Luke 23:46". This is important to the concept of "cherem" which we need to understand.}

{Note: By pushing His head forward, his blood gathered above His diaphragm. Therefore demonstrating that He did not bleed to death. Coming up, when the soldier pierces Him, blood clots and serum will come forth. This demonstrates that He was already physically dead when pierced.}

31~~The Jews therefore,
because it kept on being the preparation/'prepared vessel' {paraskeue}
  {on Gentile Wednesday before Sundown -
  Preparation for High Sabbath},
for the purpose that the bodies should not
remain upon the cross on the Sabbath,
(for that Sabbath was an high day
  {indicates a 'super holy day for the Jews'},)
besought Pilate that their legs might be broken,
and [that] they might be lifted up and taken down.

{Note: In the Passover feast, the bones of the lamb could not be broken. This was a picture of Jesus Christ, our Passover - the lamb without spot - not having a bone broken on the cross.}

{Note: It was against the Jewish rituals for a body to hand on the cross on a holy day. So they asked the Romans to take a mallet and smashed the bones of the three men on the cross - therefore they would die of the pain and shock - and their bodies could be taken down before the sun went down.}

{Breaking of the Bones of the Two Thieves on the Cross}
32~~ Then came the soldiers,
and brake the legs of the first,
and of the other which was crucified with him.

33~~ But having come to Jesus,
they saw that He was dead {physical death - thnesko} already,
they brake not His legs.

34~~ But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side,
and instantly came there out blood clots {haima} and serum {hudor}.

35~~And he who stared . . . {at it}
  {horao -nominative singular masculine - John himself}
'gave permanent testimony'/'bare record',
and his witness is trustworthy/'credible as evidence' {alethinos}.
And that one {John} has inherent knowledge {oida}
that he said true {alethes},
that you might believe.

36~~ For these things came to pass,
for the purpose that the scripture might receive fulfillment {Exodus 12:46},
"A bone of Him shall absolutely not {ouk} be broken in pieces."

37~~ And again another scripture said {Zechariah 12:10},
"They shall look on Him Whom they pierced."

{Verses 38-42: Burial of Jesus Christ}
38~~But after this, Joseph of Arimathea,
being a disciple/'categorical doctrinal student' of Jesus
having become a hidden one {passive tense he 'received hiding'},
because of fear of the Jews {religious leaders},
requested of Pilate for the purpose that
he might lift up and carry away body of Jesus.
And Pilate gave him permission accordingly,
and, he went and lifted up and carried away the body.

{Note: In Luke 23:50, we see Joseph was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin Counsel. That makes him one of the rulers of the Jews and he was very rich ( Matthew 27:57). Isaiah 53:9 is fulfilled - Jesus was identified with rich men in His death. Jesus was identified with two sinners - thieves - in His spiritual death. His physical death is identified with riches. He is a believer, but with weak moral courage until the trial of Jesus. In the trial, doctrine in his soul kicked in and he voted to free Jesus (Luke 23:51) - and now his public display of love for the Lord will cost him all his worldly 'details of life'.}

39~~At this point in time, also came Nicodemus,
who at first had come face to face with Jesus at night,
brought a mixture of myrrh
and aloes weighing a hundred litra {1 litra = 12 ozs; seventy-five pounds}.

{Note: Under the Mosaic Law, two witnesses are needed to establish a fact. So, here we have Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus being the two pallbearers and witnesses to the physical death of Jesus. Nicodemus came to Jesus by night earlier in John 3: 1-21. He was also a ruler of the Jews by being a member of the Sanhedrin Counsel and defended Jesus to the Counsel (John 7:50-52). And he was one of the three richest men in Jerusalem. He would be a pauper - in earthly things - by his death. The cost of these burial ointments was sky high! This was the funeral of a King!}

40~~Then they took the body of Jesus
and wrapped it in strips of linen cloth
associate with the aromatic spices,
according to Jewish burial customs.

41~~Now at the place where He {Jesus} received crucifixion
there kept on being a garden,
and in the garden kept on being a new monument {mnemeion}
in which there 'never was laid anyone'/'no one had yet been buried'.

{Note: This made the tomb 'clean' by all Jewish customs. Had someone been buried there before, would make the tomb 'ritually unclean'.}

42~~So there the body received laying,
because it was the Jew's Preparation {day}
and the monument was nearby.

{Note: The Jewish day starts at sundown. The Preparation Day is the day when the Lamb is prepared for the Passover meal. The body of Jesus had to be in the ground before sundown so the men quickly took the body of Jesus to this garden and Monument.}
