John

Chapter 1 (Continued)
{Verses 29-34: 2nd Day of the Diary}
{Verse 29- Application 4 - Jesus Christ and the Cross - The Lamb of God }
29~~The next day {2nd consecutive day},
John {the Herald/Baptizer} sees Jesus coming to him {Matt. 3:17} and said,
"Behold the Lamb of God
Who bears/'lifts up and carries the burden of' {airo}
the sin of the world {ALL sin - for ALL mankind - unlimited atonement}."

{Note: In the Old Testament a lamb without spot or blemish was tied to the four horns of the altar. The Priest, while the man was naming his sins, placed one hand on the head of the man and his other hand on the head of the lamb, thus 'transferring the sins of the man' to the spotless and blameless lamb. Then the Priest would cut the throat of the Lamb and it would then proceed to bleed to death. The Lamb was innocent, but it would pay the price of the sins of the people. This was a picture of Jesus Christ, as the Lamb of Christ, who came to take away the sins of the world. The Levitical Offerings communicated the gospel in picture form - through sight, by what they observed in the ritual of the Levitical Offerings. Christ didn't so much take away the sins of the world as he 'lifted them up', he bore them in his own body. He carried the burden, the judgment for our sins. The Greek word 'Airo' means to bear or carry a burden.}

30~~This keeps on being He {Jesus - 2nd Person of the Godhead}
this keeps on being the One
{about} Whom I have communicated,
"After me comes a Man
Who is/was preferred {Jesus is 1st in precedence in His Humanity}
before me {John the Herald} . . .
Who kept on existing before me {speaking of Jesus' deity}."

{Note: The gospel of John concentrates on the deity of Christ. Because the focus is on Jesus Christ's Deity, the actual baptism of Christ by John is not mentioned in this gospel.}

31~~ "I knew Him not {now John knows but not before!},
but that He may be made manifest to Israel,
therefore, I have come baptizing with water."

{Note: This explains why John Baptized. He was instructed to keep on baptizing until One came to him who he would baptize but did not NEED baptism! On this person, a Spirit in the form of a dove would land on him and then John would know. When John knew, he was instructed to announce it - as Jesus' herald. Jesus' baptism was a unique baptism - representing His agreement to His role in God the Father's plan.}

{Verses 32 - 42 - Application 5 - Jesus Christ and the Church Age}
32~~And John gave witness {as the herald recognizing that Jesus was the King},
"I saw the Spirit descending from heaven
like a dove and He remained in Him."

{Note: A dove represents the Holy Spirit . . . and is a pointer to the Christ. The identification/baptism was made by John. John was the only one who saw the dove - see Matthew 3:1-11.}

33~~ "I did not know Him,
but He {God the Father}
Who sent me . . .
told me to baptize with water,
and said to me,
"Upon Whom you see the Spirit descending
and remaining in Him,
the Same One is He
Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit."

{Note: Real Baptism of Acts 2:3 - The Holy Spirit would descend upon them in Jerusalem, as the Holy Spirit descended upon Christ at the Jordan River. The Holy Spirit descended upon them and put every believer in Union with Jesus Christ. This would be the beginning of the Church Age. See Acts 1:5 and Acts 11:15-16.}

{Note: John and Jesus were cousins. John was 6 months older than Jesus, so John, of course, knew Jesus was alleged to be the Messiah. But when John was given the ministry as the 'Herald to the King', 'silence was put upon him'. God made it clear to John that until you see the dove descending on Him, you are to be silent about Who the savior is. You must follow a biblical pattern. Don't get out ahead of the Lord - John 3: 30-36 and Acts 19.}

34~~"And I have seen
and testified
that this {Jesus} keeps on being the Son of God."

{Verses 35- 42: 3rd Day of the Diary}
35~~"The next day
John stood there {after preaching to the crowd}
with two of his disciples {Andrew and John}."

{Note: Later in the context, we find the two disciples are Andrew - who is Peter's brother; and, John - who is the writer of this gospel. John also has a brother named James.}

{1st of 3 types of Evangelism - Mass Evangelism}
36~~"And looking upon Jesus as He walked,
he {John the Herald/Baptizer} said,
"Behold the Lamb of God!"

37~~ The two disciples heard him {John the Herald} speak,
and they followed Jesus.

38~~Then Jesus turned
and seeing them following, said to them,
"What do you seek?"
They said to Him,
"Rabbi - {teacher in authority}
which is being interpreted {hermeneuo} 'master' -
where are you staying {idiom - we want to be with you!}?"

{Note: Hermeneuo is the Greek word for interpretation. It is the Greek word from which we get hermeneutics - meaning the study of the Word of God.}

39~~He {Jesus} said to them,
"Come and see {Jesus did not 'give an address'}."
They came and saw where He lived
and they stayed with Him that day -
for it was about the 10th hour {10a.m.}.

{Note: This was very important to the writer John! John always used Roman time so this was 10 a.m. in the morning - the Apostle John never forgot this!}.

40~~One of the two
who heard John {the Baptist} speak
and followed Him {Jesus} was Andrew . . .
Simon Peter's brother.

{2nd of 3 types of Evangelism - Personal Evangelism - Andrew to Peter}
41~~He {Andrew} first found his own brother,
Simon, and said to him,
"We have found the Messiah . . .
which is interpreted {in the Greek} the Christ."

42~~And he {Andrew} brought him {Simon Peter} to Jesus.
Now Jesus saw him and He said,
"You are Simon, the Son of Jonah.
You shall be called Cephas . . .
which is by translation 'a pebble' {Petros}.

{Note: Petros from which we get 'Peter' literally is a 'chip' or pebble off a Mountain or Huge Rock (petra). From Matthew 16:18, we learn that Jesus is the Rock on which the Church is built. And Peter is a 'chip or pebble' from that Rock.}

{Note: A pebble is something small and drops out of sight when it is thrown in the pond. It is going to shrink . . . Peter shrunk, which took some time, but when the Lord got finished with Peter he was built up strong in Christ. Peter was one who had to learn everything the hard way. He had fine characteristics, but Peter was hardheaded, so he had to be remolded.}

{Verses 43-51 - 4th Day of the Diary}
{Verses 43-51 - Application 6 - Jesus Christ and the Tribulation and His 2nd Advent Philip is a Perfect example of the Remnant in the Tribulation}
43~~The following day,
Jesus went on to Galilee,
and He found Philip
and said to him, "Follow Me."

44~~Now Philip was from Bethsaida . . .
the city of Andrew and Peter.

{3rd of 3 types of Evangelism - Contact Evangelism - to unknown People - Philip to Nathaniel}
45~~Philip found Nathaniel
and said to him,
"We have found Him
of Whom Moses . . . in the law . . .
and also the prophets wrote -
Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

46~~And Nathaniel said to him,
"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"
  {idiom - meaning 'not possible' - negative volition expressed}
Philip said, "Come and see."

{Note: Nathaniel knew the Messiah/Christ must come from Bethlehem - from the line of David - so he questions Jesus being the Messiah but coming from 'Nazareth'. Principal - how do you treat negative volition? Take the person to the Truth - here to the Living Word - us today to the Written Word.}

47~~Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward Him
and said of him,
"Behold, an Israelite indeed,
in Whom is no deceit!"

{Note: This is an idiom meaning Jesus knew Nathaniel leveled with Philip - in eternity past!}

48~~Nathaniel answered and said to Him,
"How do You know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called/invited you,
I saw you under the fig tree."

{Note: Apparently Philip met Nathaniel under a fig tree. Jesus knew this and let Nathaniel know He knew it! This amazed Nathaniel!}

49~~Nathaniel answered and said to Him,
"Rabbi, You are the Son of God {recognized His Deity}!
You are the King of Israel {recognized His Royalty in His Humanity}!"

50~~Jesus answered and said to him,
"Because I said to you,
'I saw you under the fig tree
do you believe?'
You will see greater things than these."

51~~ And He {Jesus} said to him {Nathaniel},
"Most assuredly/point of doctrine,
I say to you,
hereafter, you shall see the heaven open
and the angels of God ascending
and descending upon the Son of Man."

{Note: When Nathaniel believed in Christ, the angels in heaven rejoiced at another victory won in the Angelic Conflict.}
