{Judgment
Function of the Justice of God}
{Verses
1-8: Judgment Function of the Justice of God toward the Self-righteous}
1~~
Therefore you keep on being
without
excuse/without defense {before the justice of God}
Oh
man {self-righteous person}
everyone
of you who judges
for
in which sphere you keep judging another of a different category
{this one - in self-righteousness - judges as evil the one who
commits the sins of 1:29-31}
you
'judge and condemn' {katakrino} yourself.
For
you who keep judging,
keep
on practicing the same things {you sin also}.
{Note: Self-righteousness is promoted by mutual admiration societies, composed of the arrogant and the inadequate. The two categories of sinners here are 1) the sinful person mentioned in verses 1:29-32 - those with lasciviousness as their weak trend of the Old Sin Nature; and 2) the person with an ascetic week trend of the Old Sin Nature. The ascetic tends to judge and condemn the overt sinner. RBT uses as an example a person with sand throughout their house lives next to a person with coal dust through out their house. So the sand-man says, 'Your coal dust filled house is DIRTY.' When in reality, both houses are dirty! Kata means 'down or under'. Krino means to judge. So Katakrino means to judge and come to a condemnation of the person being judged.}
2~~But,
in contrast, we 'learn to know'/realize/perceive {oida}
that
the judicial verdict/action from The God
keeps
on being in accordance with doctrine/Truth
against
those who practice/commit such things.
{Note: Oida comes from the root of 'id', which is used in psychology. It means to have knowledge in your frontal lobe from experience or study.}
3~~And
do you infer/conclude this,
Oh
Man {self-righteous Gentile in verse 1}
to
judge those who practice similar things
and
yet do them yourself {sin in a different category},
that
you will escape the judgment/'judicial verdict' of God?
{Note: RBT says this first half of the chapter deals with Gentile self-righteousness where the second half deals with Jewish self-righteousness. The big difference is the Gentiles did not grow up studying the Mosaic Law. Their self-righteousness is based on the norms and standards (human viewpoint) developed under mainly the Roman and Greek cultures. So here their area of weakness is not the same as those they are judging, maligning, gossiping against. Yet both the doer of the evil and the gossiper are both sinning!}
4~~Or
do you disparage/'treat with contempt'
{through maliciously judging each other}
the
riches/wealth/'blessings from adjusting to the righteousness
and
justice of God' {ploutos}
of
His gracious generosity
and
clemency
and
patience?
Not
knowing that the graciousness of the God
brings
you to conversion {change of attitude toward Christ}?
{Note: Ploutos started out as the details of life that an aristocrat had. It came to mean the possessions of any wealthy person. Paul uses it for spiritual blessings - having the capacity to enjoy life, the capacity to share God's happiness.}
5~~But
because of your hardness
and
your unrepentant heart/'right lobe',
you
store up and accumulate 'just anger'/wrath {orge}
for
yourselves against the day of 'just anger'/wrath
{Great White Throne Judgment for unbelievers} . . .
even
the disclosure/revelation of the righteous/just judgment
from
God (!) . . . 6~~
Who
{Jesus Christ} will render to each one
according
to his works {human works}.
{Note: Orge is a very negative word when applied to humans. It means to be emotionally angry at someone. When applied to God, it means 'righteous indignation'. God does not get angry. But if you conflict with His righteousness, His justice does respond with discipline.}
{Note: Believers who use I John 1:9 to stay in fellowship, take in doctrine and allow God to work through him in the production of divine good. However unbelievers and believers out of fellowship 'work, work' work' for the approbation of God. Yet, 'his righteousnesses are as menstrual rags in the sight of the Lord'. So on the day of judgment, the book of works will be opened for all unbelievers and they will be added up to see if they 'earned salvation'. But all will fall short of the glory of God and will be tossed into the lake of fire.}

of Salvation, not the Mechanics of being Saved}
7~~
To those, on the one hand, who
-
on the basis of expectation of a good work {singular work - Jesus
Christ on the Cross} -
are
seeking eternal life . . .
there
is glory
and
honor
and
everlasting life.
8~~But
to those, on the other hand,
who
have inordinate ambition {eritheia}
and
also do refuse to believe
or
obey the 'body of doctrine'/truth {aletheia}
but
follow/obey unrighteousness
{maladjustment to the justice and righteousness of God} . . .
{these
will receive from God} anger {anger - judgement in time}
and
'just anger'/wrath {everlasting judgment in eternity future}.
{Note: Eritheia was the word used for a person who ran for office to get out of doing hard labor. It was also used to describe a prostitute dealing with her john. It came to mean a person with ambition beyond that with which they are capable to handle - inordinate ambition. Someone who wants to get ahead through any means possible. }

Function of the Justice of God toward Evil - Verses 9-16}
9~~{For
maladjustment there is}
pressure/'personal
suffering' {thlipsis}
and
distress/'historical disaster' {stenochoria}
for
every soul of man who produces the evil,
especially
with reference to the Jew
but
also with reference to the Greek {Hellen}.
10-11~~
But {there is} glory {doxa}
and
honor {time}
even
prosperity/'inner happiness'/peace {eirene}
to
each one who accomplish/
attains
the 'good of intrinsic value' {agathos} . . .
especially
with reference to the Jew
but
also with reference to the Greek {Hellen} . . . 11~~
for
there is never partiality before the God.
{Note: The Jews are the chosen people of God. They are currently out under discipline, but they are still loved by God. In the Church Age, there are no racial differences in the body of Christ.}
12~~For
as many as without the law have sinned . . .
without
the law will also perish.
And
as many under the law have sinned . . .
through
the law will be judged . . .
{Verses

13~~(For
you see,
the
hearers of the law are not righteous/just before the God,
in
fact, the doers of the law shall not be declared justified/righteous.

14~~
For every time the Gentiles
{self-righteous type as an example},
who
do not have the law,
do
instinctively those things from the law,
these,
not having the law, are a law to themselves {self-righteous}.
15~~{These
very Gentiles} who demonstrate
the
accomplishment of the law written in their right lobes . . .
{without knowing the Mosaic Law, they have in their set of norms
and standards the things taught by the Mosaic Law}
their
conscience confirming the testimony
in
fact, their thoughts alternately
{idiom - literally 'between one another'}
accusing
{kategoreo - all self-righteous people are arrogant
and snobs and must find someone to malign}
or
else {e: following will be the mutually exclusive other option},
defending
themselves {our righteousness is acceptable to God
for salvation - type activity}.)

will judge the secrets
{NOT sins - their 'norms and standards' are judged}

{Misconception
of Legalism and then Distortion of the Law}
17-18~~If,
on the one hand, you are classified as a Jew
-
and you are -
and
not only rely on the law
{for salvation by keeping the Mosaic Law}
but
also boast of your relationship to God
-
and you do -18~~
and
know from experience or study {ginosko} {His} will
and
approve those superior things
because
you receive instruction from the law,
{Self-righteous
have Misplaced Confidence in Themselves}
19~~Moreover,
you . . . yourselves are confident
that
you are a guide of the blind ones . . .
a
light with reference to those in darkness . . .
20~~{You
are} an instructor of the foolish/ignorant,
an
'instructor with overtones of discipline' {didaskalos}
of
'immature ones'/'little children' {nepios},
having
a superficial form of knowledge
and
the doctrine/truth in the law.

21-23: Protasis of Apodosis in Verses 17-20}
21~~You
therefore when you teach another,
do
you not teach yourself? {format for the next three questions}
You
who preach/'proclaim in a loud voice'
{kerusso} {self-righteous Judaizers}
that
a man shall not {me} steal,
do
you steal?
{Note: The Jews thought that if you refrained from certain things you were 'saved and went to heaven'. So if you did not steal, commit adultery and participate in idolatry, then you were saved. Paul will refute this. It is NOT that these are ok to do, they are NOT! But it does not relate to your salvation - Jesus was already judged for these sins on the cross.}
22~~You
who say one should not {me} commit adultery {moicheuo}, do you
commit adultery? {condemnation of overt fornication
while they were mentally doing it}
You
who 'persistently detest'/abhor idols,
do
you rob idol temples?
{Note: The idol temples were used in the ancient world as banks. The Jews would not think of stealing, but since the money was tainted by being involved in idolatry, they convinced themselves it was not really stealing to take this money!}
23~~You
who keep on boasting in the law
through
violation/breaking of the law,
{do
you} dishonor the God?
{Note: This is the legalistic Jew who is using the Mosaic Law for salvation. They think the law 'promotes' mankind. When in reality, the law 'demotes' mankind to our true worthless state. It is not who and what we are, but Who and What God is that counts - Grace!}

24~~Consequently,
the name/reputation of The God,
keeps
on being blasphemed/slandered/
maligned
among the Gentiles because of you all -
as
it stands written in the past
with
results that last forever {Isaiah 52:5}

25~~For
on the one hand, circumcision is beneficial
if
you 'practice the law'/'accomplish the purpose of the law';
but
if on the other hand,
you
keep on being a breaker of the law - maybe yes, maybe no -
your
circumcision has become uncircumcision {has no benefit}.

26~~Therefore
if the uncircumcision {uncircumcised Gentile man}
keeps/observes
the righteous requirements
from
the source of the law
-maybe
he will, maybe he will not -
will
absolutely not {ouk} his uncircumcision
be
evaluated/regarded as circumcision?
Yes
it will {required response}.
{Note: If the uncircumcised Gentile who has no ritual or spiritual heritage behind him keeps the commandments of the Mosaic Law, would not his 'works' be considered 'right'?}
27~~In
fact, shall not the physically uncircumcised man
{Idiom: literally 'the uncircumcision by nature'} -
if
he accomplishes the purposes of the law
-maybe
he will, maybe he will not -
will
not he {the physically uncircumcised gentile man}
judge
you {in the future}(?) . . .
who
through the letter/'written page' {gramma}
{idiom: literally 'is letters' - if you do not understand the bible,
it is only a bunch of meaningless letters of the alphabet}
and
circumcision,
transgresses/breaks
the law?
28~~Consequently
a
person keeps on being absolutely not {ouk} a Jew
who
is one 'by overt manifestation'/outwardly,
neither
is circumcision that category which is external in the flesh.
29~~But
he is a Jew who is one
'by
a hidden birth'/inwardly {spiritual regeneration},
and
circumcision is that category of the 'right lobe'/heart
by
the Spirit and not by the letter/'written page' {gramma}
whose
approbation/praise is absolutely not {ouk} from mankind
but
from God.
