I Thessalonians

Chapter 2 (Continued)
[Continuing the Discussion of the Countrymen of Jesus killing Him]
15a~~And [kai]
killing the Lord Jesus . . .
[apokteino (aorist active participle) Kurios Iesous]
and their own prophets.
  [kai idios prophetes]

[Note: Paul is pointing out that the Jews contributed to the death of Jesus (Whom they considered a false prophet). But, still they recognized that in time past they had killed prophets they now recognized as True prophets! For example, King Saul killed an entire city of priests (I Samuel 22:19 - destruction of the city of Nob). And, Isaiah is said to have been sawed in half in extra-biblical reports.]

15b~~And persecuting/oppressing us . . .
[ekdioko (aorist active participle) hemas (Paul and his team)]
and they are not striving to please God . . .
[and aresko (present active participle) Theos]
and are antagonistic/hostile/"in opposition" to all men.
  [kai enantios pas anthropos]

16a~~Forbidding us
  [koluo (present active participle) hemas]
to speak to the Gentiles/"non-Jews"
  [laleo (aorist active infinitive) ethnos]
that they might receive salvation.
  [sozo (aorist passive subjunctive)]

16b~~Toward "to fill up a deficiency"
[eis anapleroo (aorist active infinitive) -
on their sins at all times.
  [autos hamartia pantote]

[Note: This is an idiom meaning "They keep on trying to get drunker and drunker on their sins and keep on doing so." They just can not get full of drinking in their own sins.]

16c~~Moreover [de]
the wrath/anger/"Righteous Indignation (when God is the subject)"
  [orge]
is "anticipated to come upon" them
[phthano (aorist active indicative) epi autos]
toward the uttermost/termination/"the end of things. [eis telos]

[Note: There is a judgement day for all mankind. Those who are persecuting the followers of the Ways/Doctrines of Jesus will have their just rewards. Jesus Himself will be their judge.]

{Verses 17-20: Now in contrast some of the rewards of ministering}
17~~Now/Moreover we, brethren,
  [de hemeis adelphos]
I receive the "bereaving of a parent"
  [aporphanizo (aorist passive participle)]
from the ultimate source of you
  [apo humon]
"face to face with"/for
  [pros]
a short limited amount of time
  [hora kairos]
"in outward appearance"/"in the face" . . .
  [prosopon]
absolutely not in heart/"the thinking part of the soul"
  [ouk kardia]
[my] endeavor/"diligently making haste"
  [spoudazo (aorist active indicative)]
"the more abundantly"/"in a much greater degree"
  [perissoteros}
to see your face/"outward appearance"
[eido (aorist active infinitive) humon prosopon]
in/by/with great emotional desire.
  [en polus epithumia]

[Note: This is strong and very idiomatic. Paul is saying he is like a parent who is absent from their child and strongly desires to see them again in person. The Thessalonians were Paul's spiritual children and they were receptive to his person and his teaching. He was extremely emotional that he had to leave them. Any great teacher of the Word can tell you how it feels to leave a congregation who are positive to him and his teaching of the Word! Paul was not married. These positive believers were his family just a Jesus said about those positive to His teaching in Mark 3:28 and following.]

18a~~Wherefore/"on account of this" [dio]
we desire
  [thelo (aorist active indicative)]
to come face to face with you,
[erchomai (aorist active infinitive) pros humas]
certainly/truly I, Paul,
  [men ego Paulos]
once and again.
[kai hapax kai (literally "and once again and")]

[Note: Paul says his team desires from their own free will to return to fellowship with the Thessalonians again - and then adds very strongly his own personal desire to do the same.]

18b~~And/But Satan hinders/"impedes the course of" us.
[kai Satanas egkopto (aorist active indicative) hemas]

19a~~For what . . . [is] our hope/"absolute confidence"?
  [gar tis hemon elpis]

19b~~Or . . . [what is our] joy/gladness/"inner happiness"?
  [e chara]

19c~~Or . . . [what is our]
crown of rejoicing/"act of boasting/glorying"?
  [e stephanos kauchesis]

[Note: In the day the Bible was written, crowns were given as rewards to great soldiers and athletes. The crown was the symbol. With the crown came great financial rewards. We are given spiritual gifts by God that we are to exercise in time. Paul's gift was to communicate doctrine. His free will desire to allow God to Work His spiritual communicative gift through himself will be rewarded in time and eternity. Paul's "symbol" or "wreath" is the number of believers he brought to Christ (gift of evangelism) and, for this great man with many spiritual gifts, those whom he brought to spiritual maturity (his gift of pastor-teacher) also will be part of his "crown". Exercising His administrative/rulership gift of apostle - as God's supreme representative on earth in His absence - will be rewarded also. This is our EXAMPLE. We also will be rewarded with crowns etc. if we allow God to Work His spiritual gift (produce Divine Good) through us.]

19d~~Or . . . by no means
  [e ouchi]
[is it not] even/and you . . .
  [kai humeis]
in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ
  [emprosthen hemon Kurios Iesous Christos]
in/by/with/at His coming/"return from heaven"?
  [en autos parousia]

[Note: Here Jesus is not said to come all the way to the earth. Instead this is most likely when we go up into the air to meet Him at the rapture of the Church. For some period of time, all believers in Christ will be evaluated and justly rewarded by Christ.]

20~~For you [gar humeis]
[Thessalonians and all "children of Paul and his team"]
keep on being our glory and our joy/"source of inner happiness".
  [eimi hemon doxa kai chara]

[Note: The Thessalonians turned out to be a great church and the center of great missionary activities! Paul is very thrilled with them in this epistle to them. Contrast this with his bombastic epistle to the Galatians who are "falling away into the bondage of the Mosaic Law" and the Corinthians who are "falling away into lust fulfillment and great carnality."]
