II Samuel

Chapter 7

{David's Spiritual Maturity from Adjusting to the Justice of God}

{Verses 1-7: David's Desire to Build a Temple
  (Background for the Davidic Covenant)}

{Tame Party/Conversation between King and 'Royal Chaplin' -
  Prophet Nathan- David Shares His Original Thought with Nathan}
1~~And it came to pass
  {haja - new subject in chronological order},
when the king 'sat'/'dwelled in prosperity' {yashab}
  {at his desk - it is ok to sit and pray to God!}
in his castle/house
  {in his military headquarters}
and Jehovah/God 'had given him rest'/
'caused him to be able to rest'
  {nuwach - Hiphil causative stem}
on every side from all his enemies; 2~~
  {prosperous and peaceful interlude between wars - from the
  Jebusites (foreign enemy destroyed), Philistines (neutralized),
  Michal (domestic 'enemy' now gone as of Chapter 6)}
that the king said unto Nathan the prophet, "See now
  {used instead of the normal BEHOLD because BEHOLD is a shouting
  word - one does not shout at a social event - this is a gathering
  of friends},
I 'dwelled in prosperity' {yashab}
in an castle/mansion of cedar
  {see II Samuel 5:10-12 - is a stone castle lined with cedar},
but the Ark of 'Elohiym/Godhead
sits/'dwells in prosperity' {yashab}
in the middle of curtains."

{Note: From Chapter 6, we learned a few things. First, in order to build a temple, the Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat must be returned to Israel. This was accomplished in Chapter 6. Second David must desire to build temple. This was done here. But, David was refused by God - and instead given a greater and more enduring contract - the unconditional Davidic Covenant from God (the gracious giver - asking NOTHING in return - no strings - unconditional) to David (who did nothing to earn or deserve the gracious gift - a picture of ALL creatures). Third, Michal must be eliminated from the Davidic Family before the temple can be built.}

{Note: Nathan is the personal 'army chaplin' of the king. Gad is the chief priest of David's Army. Nathan is important to David. He is the man God uses to teach David many things, and God also uses to chastise David - particularly where Bathsheba was concerned. David named one of his sons by Bathsheba after Nathan. And, this is the line of David from which the Messiah will come. Apparently here David is having a social gathering and Nathan is welcome and is NOT a damper on the good times - as is the trait of a good, non-judgmental communicator of the Word.}

3~~So Nathan replied/'kept on saying' {'amar} to the king
  {'amar - 'imperfect tense' indicates more was said, but this is all
  that was recorded for eternity},
"Go/March {yalak}, do/'manufacture from grace' {`asah}
all that is in your 'right lobe'/heart;
for Jehovah/God . . . {is} with you."

{Note: This is a new idea. It has no foundation in the Word. Both David and Nathan are SuperGrace believers. Both now agree that though on the surface it appears building a permanent dwelling for the Lord would contradict the passages on how to construct the Tabernacle, in reality it does not.}

4-5~~However, it came to pass
  {hajah - advance of narrative in historical sequence}
that same night {very night of the party above},
that the word/'doctrinal communication' {dabar} of Jehovah/God
came unto Nathan, saying, 5~~
"Go/March {over to the castle} {yalak}
and communicate to My servant David,
thus said Jehovah/God,
'Should you build Me an house
for ME to sit in/'dwell in prosperity?

No, you will not do so.' "
 {negative interrogative idiom: The negative rhetorical question from
  God REQUIRES a negative response.}

{Note: David's thought was a good one - as confirmed by Nathan. But a believer must also operate on God's time table. So, the plan is right, but the timing is not. The building of the temple must be postponed for one generation.}

{Reasons Given for the Postponement}
6~~ "For I {God} have not sat/'dwelt in prosperity' {yashab}
in a temple/house {`alah}
since the time that I {God} caused to bring
  {`alah - Hiphil causative stem}
the children of Israel out of Egypt
  {no nation exists while under slavery} . . .
even to this day {roughly 446 years}.

For I {God} have been wandering about {halak}
in a tabernacle
  {a temporary structure - and it was justified as correct by the
  scriptures - they were wandering} . . .
as in a temple {mishkan - a permanent structure}."

{Note: This means the tabernacle has been a substitute for the temple. The first 400 years was justified. For the last few decades, this was not justified. David now wants to correct the situation. He wants to build a permanent structure in a permanent capital - now at Jerusalem.}

{David's Thought Without Precedent - Can a New Thought be RIGHT?}
7~~ "Wherever I Myself {God} have wandered
from place to place
with all the children of Israel
have I spoken a word/'doctrinal communication' {dabar}
with one of the tribes of Israel {about this thing},
whom I had commanded to shepherd {ra`ah}
My people, Israel, saying,
'Why do you not build Me an house of cedar?' "

{Note: This means that every tribe had a chance to 'shepherd'/rule the people. For example the Levi's (Moses), Ephraim (Joshua), Benjamin (Saul), Naphtali, Judah (David), Issachar, Dan (Sampson), Manasseh (Gideon) ruled. And, God never commanded any of them to build Him a temple and none had this original thought before David.}

{Verses 8-17: Davidic Covenant}
8~~"Now therefore so shall you say
to my servant/slave {`ebed} David
  {ALL slaves are freemen in the Lord, and all freemen are slaves of
  the Lord! Principal here: An attitude of Humility no matter how
  great you are in human terms},
thus said Jehovah/God of the armies/hosts,
"I Myself {God} took you {David}
from the pasture/'the country hills' {naveh}
  {means from the 'wrong side of the tracks' -
  the humble beginning of David} . . .
from following the sheep . . .
  {meaning so low that he did not lead the sheep - but followed
  them! He was the lowest of the low even of the shepherds - he
  was the one who ate the dust of the herd - hanging back to pick
  up the strays - a 'nothing' in human terms}
to be prince/ruler {nagiyd} over My people . . .
over Israel."

{Note: See also Psalms 78:67-72.}

{Permanent Promotion of David and His Progeny}
9~~ "And I {God} have been with you
wherever you {David} marched/went {halak},
and I have destroyed/'caused the annihilation' {karath - Hiphil stem}
of all your enemies before you {paniym - face to face with}."

"And I {God} have made/manufactured {`asah - out of His GRACE}
for you {David} a celebrityship/'a name of greatness' . . .
like the fame of the great ones
who have been on the earth."

10~~Also I {God} will appoint {suwm}
  {suwm - perfect tense - Hebrew for future tense when it is so
  certain it is treated as 'completed action' - as if has already
  taken place}
a place
  {maqowm - emphasizes geographical location - Palestinian
  Covenant to be fulfilled in the Millennium - most of the Middle
  East}
for My people . . . Israel {unconditional covenants to Israel}.

And I {God} will plant him {Israel}
  {in the Millennium this will be fulfilled},
in order that he {Israel} might 'sit under it in prosperity' {shakan}
in a place 'of their own possession'
  {idiom: literally 'under it' - the fulfillment of the Palestinian
  covenant},
and no more be moved/disturbed {ragaz}
  {David moved a lot in his day - so this will be a permanent location
  for his line and no neighbors will be trying to force them out}.

Because the 'sons of perversion/distortion' {ben `evel}
  {refers to reversionism - God's viewpoint is Truth - anything outside
  God's plan is 'Evil' all the forces hostile to God and His viewpoint
  are categorized as 'sons of perversion' - refers to anyone who is
  influenced by evil viewpoint (any outside God's viewpoint).}
will never again 'cause to add' { yacaph - hiphil causative stem}
oppression {`anah} as beforetime.

{Note: Look at history. The Jews have been and will continue to be oppressed by those who do not understand or accept the Word of God. These 'sons of distortion' will continue to oppress the Jews until the 2nd Advent of Christ. Anyone involved in Anti-Semitism is involved in evil - period.}

{Heart of the Davidic Covenant - the Dynasty of David}
11~~Even from the day
when I {God} ordered/commanded the dictators/judges {shaphat}
to be over My people, Israel . . .
even to the time when
I {God} have caused you to rest/
'caused you to have a peaceful interlude' {nuwach - hiphil stem}
from all your enemies,
therefore, Jehovah/God has 'made a formal proclamation' { nagad}
to you that He {God} will make/'manufacture out of grace' {`asah}
for you {David} a dynasty.

{Note: For 412 years the family of David will reign - longer than any other family to date. However, this really refers to Jesus Christ - the seed of David - who will return to rule for 1000 years (Millennium) and forever.}

{Note: The principal is military victory before peace can be found in the land. David is the military victor, but it is his son Solomon who will build God a temple. So, military victory first, then freedom from military victory. Also, the tabernacle portrays Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the greater Son of David Who will reign forever. So the order is important - verse 12 'The dynasty', verse 13 the temple.}

12~~And it shall come to pass,
when your days have been fulfilled {David will die},
and you will 'lie down'/sleep {believer sleep waiting for resurrection} with your fathers,
that I will cause to raise up your seed {David's offspring} after you,
who shall come forth from your body.

Therefore, I will cause to be established His kingdom.
  {prophecy of the reign of Jesus Christ - the Greater Son of
  David . . . and the 'seed of the woman' Who will crush the head
  of the snake (Satan) and will have His heel bruised (the cross).}

{Succession of David's Prosperity}
13~~He {prophetically referring to Solomon - see I Kings 5:1-5}
 will build a house for My Name/Reputation,
and I {God} will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

{Divine Policy of God toward Solomon}
{Quoted in Hebrews 1:5}
14~~I {God} will become a father to him,
and he {Solomon} will come as a son to Me
  {blessing is implied in the verse - as a Father teachs, instructs,
  guides, and blesses his good son, so Solomon will be to God when
  Solomon is in fellowship and 'Walking in the Righteous Ways of
  God'}.

When he {Solomon} 'goes astray'/'becomes reversionistic' {`avah}
  {`avah means to bend or twist - to pervert the Laws of Divine
  Establishment. To leave the 'righteous Way of God' to go into evil
  and reversionism},
then I {God} will chasten/punish him with the rod of men,
and lashes of 'the sons of Adam'/mankind.

15~~But My grace/mercy {checed}
shall not depart away from him {David} . . .
as I caused it to depart from Saul
  {no 5th cycle of discipline in the reign of David},
whom I removed from before you.

{Amplification - the Crossroads for EVERYTHING - David's Greater Son would Rule Forever}
{Fulfilled by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - the King of Kings and
  Lord of Lords}
16~~Both your {David's} dynasty/house
  {referring to the blood-line of David would rule forever}
and your kingdom
  {a king needs a kingdom - Israel will also exist forever and ever}
will be permanent {'aman - Niphal tense} . . .
forever before your face . . .
your 'royal throne' { kicce'}
shall become established forever.

{Note: Satan understands this verse well. He was not able to stop David's greater Son from being born and from going to the cross without sin. Now he is trying to stop this unconditional promise to David that he would also have a kingdom forever. If he can kill all of Israel, then he would cause God to welch on His promise to David.}

17~~According to all these words,
and according to all these visions,
so did Nathan communicate to David.
