Job

Chapter 06
{Chapters 4-14: The First Debate}
{Chapters 4-7: Debate with Eliphaz}
{Job Responds to Eliphaz's Speech in Chapters 4 and 5}

1~~Then Job replied/answered and said,

2-3~~"If only my anguish could be weighed,
and all of my calamity placed on the scales! 3~~
It would out weigh the sand of the sea.

No wonder my words {dabar} have been impetuous.

4~~The arrows of the Almighty are within me,
my spirit drinks in their poison.

God's/'Elowahh's terrors are marshaled/'lined up' against me.

5~~Does a wild jackass bray when it has grass?

Does an ox bellow when it has fodder?

6-7~~ Can something tasteless be eaten without salt?
Or, is there flavor in the white of an egg? 7~~
My soul {nephesh} refuses to touch them
for they make me ill.

{Note: Remember Job is so ill almost all food makes him ill.}

8-10~~Oh that I might have my request . . .
that God/'Elowahh would give me what I hope for! 9~~
That God/'Elowahh would be willing to crush me . . .
to let loose His hand, and cut me off! 10~~

That I {Job} would still have this conciliation . . .
my joy in unrelenting pain
  {Job is stating what Paul later also says - he can keep his joy
  regardless his circumstances}.

In that {how Job can still remain happy}
I have not denied the doctrines/
words/'doctrinal communications' {dabar} of the Holy One.

11~~What strength do I {Job} have, that I still have hope?
What prospect, that I should be patient
  {idiom: literally 'that I should prolong my soul/life'}?

12~~Do I have the strength of the stones?
Or is my flesh of bronze?

13~~Do I have any power to help myself . . .
now that success has been driven from me?

14~~A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends . . .
  {correct statement that points out how his friend Eliphaz has failed
  HIM}.
even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

{Category III Friends Disappear like water out of a brook}
15-17~~My brothers 'are undependable'/'have dealt deceitfully'
as intermittent steams {with no water in it} . . .
as the stream that overflow 16~~
when darkened by thawing ice,
swollen with melted snow 17~~
but cease to flow in the dry season
and in heat, vanish from their channels.

18~~Caravans turn aside from their routes
and go up into the wasteland where they perish.

19~~The caravans of Tema looked {for water},
the traveling merchants of Sheba looked in hope.

{Note: These caravans were going to China for trade in circa 2000 BC.}

20~~They {the caravans} were distressed
because they had been confident.

They arrived there only to be disappointed {no water}.

21~~Now you {Eliphaz} too have proved to be no help
You see something dreadful and are afraid.

22~~Have I ever said to you {Eliphaz}
give me something . . on my behalf?

Or, loan me some money from your great wealth?

23~~Or, Deliver me from the hand of the enemy?

Or, ransom me from the clutches of terrorism?

24~~Teach me, and I {Job} will be quiet.

Show me where I have been wrong?

{Note: Job is a mature believer. He understands that he is under undeserved suffering. He challenges the great theologian Eliphaz for him to show Job where he has sinned!}

25~~How painful are honest words {dabar}!

What do your arguments prove?

{Note: Means that Eliphaz's great doctrinal dissertation was correct. But how does it apply to Job's situation? Eliphaz's application of doctrine was all wrong!}

26~~ Do you mean to correct what I say(?) . . .
and treat the words {dabar} of a despairing man as the wind?

27~~You would even cast lots for the orphans/fatherless,
and barter away your friend.

28~~But now be so kind as to look on me;
would I lie to your face?

29~~Relent, please/'I pray you',
do not be unjust.

Reconsider, for my integrity is at stake.

30~~Is there any wickedness on my lips?

Can my mouth not discern malice?
