Joshua

Chapter 14

{Note: Chapter 14:1 through Chapter 18:1 is the story of Judah and Joseph. Ruben sinned and the rulership went to Judah, the priesthood went to Levi, and the double portion went to Joseph (through two sons Manasseh and Ephraim). These chapters will focus on the rulership tribe and the double portion tribes of Joseph.}

{Verses 1-9: Preparation for the Distribution of the Inheritance to the 9 and ½ Tribes}
1~~And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan,
which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun,
  {dividing the land is not a military matter, it is a spiritual matter so
  Eleazar the high priest is mentioned first}
and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel
  {rest of the leadership also involved in the distribution},
distributed for inheritance to them.

2~~By lot {assume is Urim and Thummim}
was their inheritance,
as Jehovah/God commanded by the hand of Moses,
for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

{Note: 'By lot' is a term often used for Urim and Thummim and that is probably what they did here - they went to the Lord and asked Him who was to receive what. The Jews had direct contact with God through the High Priest's Urim (the shoulder pads) and Thummim (the checkerboard design on their breast). The High Priest had a breastplate (see Exodus 28:30). It had 12 stones - one for each tribe. The Urim was a yes/no light system that they could have used for God to tell them directly. Probably they identified a parcel of land and asked God if this was ok - they get a yes. Then ask which tribe should have it, and a stone would light up for the correct tribe.}

3~~For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes
and an half tribe on the other side Jordan
but unto the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

4~~For the children of Joseph were two tribes,
Manasseh and Ephraim,
therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land,
save cities to dwell in,
with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

5 As the Jehovah/God commanded Moses,
so the children of Israel did,
and they divided the land.

{Caleb of the Tribe of Judah came to See Him}
6~~Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal
and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him,
  {Caleb is the Jewish word for 'dog' and that is not a liked animal in
  this day}
"You know the thing that the Jehovah/God said unto Moses
the man of 'Elohiym/Godhead
concerning me and you all in Kadeshbarnea."

{Note: See Numbers 13 for what was said. Caleb and Joshua were the two spies of twelve who the Exodus generation sent into the land - they said let's take it. But the majority said they were scared - there are giants in the land!}

7~~Forty years old was I when Moses
the servant of the Jehovah/God
sent me from Kadeshbarnea to spy out the land;
and I brought him word again as it was in my heart/'right lobe'.

8~~Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me
made the heart/'right lobe' of the people melt
but I wholly followed the Jehovah/God my 'Elohiym/Godhead.

9~~And Moses swore on that day, saying,
"Surely the land whereon
your feet have trodden shall be your inheritance,
and your children's for ever,
because you have wholly followed
Jehovah/God . . . 'Elohiym/Godhead."

10~~"And now, behold, the Jehovah/God has kept me alive,
as He said, these forty and five years {now he is 85 years old},
even since Jehovah/God spoke this word unto Moses,
while the children of Israel wandered in the desert
and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old."

11~~"And yet I {Caleb} am as strong this day
as I was in the day that Moses sent me.
As my strength was then, even so is my strength now,
for war, both to go out, and to come in
  {idiom meaning he can do anything at all - no limitations}."

12~~"Now therefore give me this mountain,
whereof Jehovah/God spoke in that day
for you {Joshua} heard in that day how the Anakims were there,
and that the cities were great and fenced.
If so be Jehovah/God will be with me,
then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Jehovah/God said."

13~~And Joshua blessed him,
and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh
Hebron
  {later would be called Hebron now is Kirjatharba - see verse 15}
for an inheritance.

14~~Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb
the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day,
because that he wholly followed the Jehovah/God
'Elohiym/Godhead of Israel.

15~~And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba
which Arba was a great man among the Anakims.
And the land had rest from war.
