Joshua

Chapter 1

The book of Joshua was probably written by Joshua himself. He also wrote the last chapter of the book of Deuteronomy about the death of Moses. The book summarizes the military campaign and conquest of the land of Canaan.

The book illustrates these 4 messages: 1) The faithfulness of God even when man is faithless; 2) Man can only appropriate God's grace through the non-meritorious act of faith (Joshua is a believer utilizing God's provisions); 3) Divine essence can not co-exist with sin (here the Canaanite race is so sinful it must be removed from the earth to protect the rest of the human race); 4) Finally, in the area of the theological area of 'typology', Joshua is the Old Testament equivalent to the book of Ephesians in the New Testament. The physical warfare of Joshua is a typology of the angelic warfare that is going on unseen today in the spiritual realm.

The book of Joshua is important. It is the first time that man had a written canon of scripture on which they could rely. It is the written word that is emphasized now - there are 5 books of Moses that came out first as the canon. Joshua the man is first mentioned in Numbers 13.

Chapter 1
{Verses 1-4: Command for Conquest}
{Verse 1: Meet the Replacement for Moses - Joshua}
1-2~~Now after the death of Moses
the servant of the Jehovah/God
it came to pass,
that the Jehovah/God spoke unto Joshua
the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying, 2~~
"Moses, my servant, is dead.
Now therefore arise
  {Principal: organizations can only have ONE top man},
go over this Jordan {river}
  {no flanking movement - cross here},
you, and all this people,
unto the land
'which I do give'
  {Nathan - Piel stem, perfect tense (completed action)
  as far as God is concerned it is a done deal - that is IT -
  this is the phrase of God's GRACE}
to them,
even to the children of Israel."

3~~"Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon,
that have I given unto you,
as I said unto Moses."

{Some Boundaries of the Promised Land}
4~~"From the desert and this Lebanon
  {up to the Cedar forest to the north east}
even unto the great river, the river Euphrates
  {all the way to the Euphrates river},
all the land of the Hittites,
and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun
  {the Mediterranean Sea},
shall be your coast."

{Verses 5-9: Provision for Conquest}
5~~"There shall not any man be able to stand before you all
all the days of your {Joshua's} life
as I was with Moses,
so I will be with you.
I will not fail you, nor forsake you."

6~~"Be strong and of a good courage.
For unto this people
shall you divide for an inheritance the land,
which I swore unto their fathers to give them."

{Note: Why? Goes back to Genesis 15:16 - the iniquity of the Amorites was not yet full. When they were like a mad dog, they had to be removed from the earth to not infect the rest of the human race with their madness. God removed them to protect the rest of the human race.}

{Joshua is to be Guided by WRITTEN REVELATION for the First time - The Canon}
7~~"Only be you strong and of good courage,
that you may observe to do according to all the law,
which Moses my servant commanded you.
Do not deviate from it {the Word} to the right hand
  {RBT says this is probably rationalism}
or to the left
  {RBT says this is probably is emotionalism},
that you may prosper
where ever you go.

{Note: A believer's prosperity is always contingent upon how straight he Walks in the Righteous Way of God.}

{Importance of the Written Canon of Scripture -
  Secret to Leadership particularly Spiritual Leadership}
8~~This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth
  {when Joshua speaks as the leader he MUST speak divine viewpoint!}
but you shall 'study, study, study'/meditate {hagah}
therein day and night
  {constantly - study, study and study more the Word},
that you may observe to do
  {Principal: NEVER try to DO before you KNOW}
according to all that is written therein
  {application of divine viewpoint from the written word to life's experiences}.
For then you shall make your way prosperous
  {great blessings in all categories - not just money - love, family, work,
  military etc.},
and then you shall have good success.

{Note: The key to being a good leader is to think divine viewpoint. You only SAY what you THINK. So, you need to replace your human viewpoint with divine viewpoint by the study of the Word of God.}

9~~"Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and of a good courage.
Be not afraid,
neither be you hysterical/dismayed.
For the Jehovah/God your 'Elohiym/Godhead
is with you all wherever you go."

{Note: The battle that rages within is what will control your thinking? Divine viewpoint or your emotions? Do not panic. Do not become hysterical. Have the divine viewpoint IN your soul before the crisis. Then you can apply it as it is needed.}

{Verses 10-18: Preparation for Conquest}
10-11~~Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, 11~~
  {you do not command 2 million people personally - you must have an
  organization - Joshua called his officers together}
"Pass through the army/host {pass the word to the people},
and command the people, saying,
'Prepare you food
  {practical matters are also important}
for within three days
you shall pass over this Jordan,
to go in to possess the land,
which the Jehovah/God your 'Elohiym/Godhead
gives you to possess it.' "

{Note: Joshua gave 3 days to prepare, but it actually took 8 days and that was from the grace of God. He did this so Rahab and her family could be preserved. She has to get out of Jericho first. She is in the line of the Messiah.}

{Verses 12-18: Special Problem for Joshua - Men on this side of Jordon also to Fight}
12~~And to the Reubenites
  {these were famous as being cattlemen and this East side of river was good
  cattle country God permitted them to settle on this side of the river},
and to the Gadites,
and to half the tribe of Manasseh,
spoke Joshua, saying, 13~~
"Remember the word/'doctrinal communication' {dabar}
which Moses the servant of the Jehovah/God
commanded you, saying,
'Jehovah/God your 'Elohiym/Godhead
has given you rest, and has given you this land."

14~~"Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle,
shall remain in the land which Moses gave you
on this side Jordan.
But you shall pass before your brethren armed,
all the mighty men of valor, and help them."

15~~"Until Jehovah/God has given your brethren rest,
as He has given you,
and they also have possessed the land
which the Jehovah/God your 'Elohiym/Godhead gives them.
Then you shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it,
which Moses the Jehovah/God's servant gave you on this side
of the Jordan toward the sun rising."

16~~And they answered Joshua, saying,
"All that you command us we will do,
and wherever you send us, we will go."

17~~"According as we hear/listen/obey {shama`}
unto Moses in all things,
so will we hear/listen/obey {shama`} unto you.
Only Jehovah/God your 'Elohiym/Godhead
be with you,
as He was with Moses."

18~~"Whosoever be he who does rebel against your order,
and will not hear/listen/obey {shama`}
unto your words/'doctrinal communication' {dabar}
in all that you command him,
he shall be put to death.

Only be strong and of a good courage."
